Chapter 45: Night run

After discovering that the ammunition had run out, Gao Yang was really out of ideas. He threw the RPD into the cart and ran off after turning around.

Gao Yang unleashed his maximum speed. The pushcart rang loudly as it skittered forward. He was almost running empty-handed so he quickly caught up with Tribo.

When he caught up with Tribo, the militias behind were also in pursuit. They were hundred plus meters away from their pursuers. Gao Yang wasn’t able to speak and pushed the cart ten plus meters in front of Tribo before stopping. He let go of it and moved to the side before unsheathing his M1A. He activated the aim-scope during all that action. He opened fire while barely aiming.

Tribo basically didn’t need to tell Gao Yang anything. He threw Grolev into the cart after reaching it. He pushed and ran. It was so much easier compared to carrying Grolev. Tribo’s speed increased by folds. But Grolev had to endure some physical pain. In all that emergency, Tribo didn’t dare to position him nice and slow into the cart. He just threw him inside the cart and couldn’t care about Grolev being hurt by the metal push cart as he was impacted by it.

Seeing Tribo’s run, Gao Yang wanted to slow their pursuers down. When he looked through the infrared scope, however, he saw a large piece of red rushing towards him. He didn’t need to aim specifically. He just opened fire anyhow and down went some of the pursuers.

As those shots hit, the pursuers who were in a clump slathered out immediately like butter on bread. Some went prone on the spot and some dodged to the side of the road for cover and stopped completely.

Gao Yang didn’t expect for those few shots to be so effective. But he got over it after realizing that the enemy couldn’t tell how many people they were facing as they were in the dark. They could only fire at the darkness.

Enlightened about the crux of this matter, Gao Yang immediately flashed to the side and shouted in English, “First and second squadron, advance! Squadron three on standby, surround them, don’t let them escape.”

After shouting, Gao Yang didn’t care whether they understood or not. He fled immediately.

Gao Yang ran for very long but couldn’t catch up with Tribo. Helpless, he could only stop and deduce things by sound, listening for the cart’s noise. He then aimed with his scope and searched around. He found Tribo going on a separate path at a fork. If Gao Yang didn’t stop, they would have been separated.

He rushed over there after finding. When he reached Tribo, Tribo spoke while panting before Gao Yang could do so. “You’re too slow. I was thinking if I should stop and wait for you.”

To Gao Yang, his strength was inferior to Tribo’s for sure. But long-term stamina? Gao Yang was miles better than Tribo.

Without panting at all Gao Yang said, “Cut the crap, we almost got separated just now. Where were you planning to go? Do you know where we’re running to?”

“It’s so dark and we’re as blind as bats. How would I know where this is? I just ran anyhow, gotta run till it’s safe first.”

Gao Yang felt that it made sense and so he followed Tribo along the road, running all the way. After running for half an hour, Gao Yang didn’t hear Grolev’s sound. He felt that he had to check Grolev’s wounds first.

After stopping, Gao Yang scanned the area behind them with his scope and made sure that there were no pursuers. Feeling safe, Gao Yang put on the NVD and checked Grolev’s injuries.

When he glanced at Grolev’s injuries, Gao Yang’s heart skipped a beat and knew that it was really grave. Grolev was seated in a curl in the cart. Due to the size limit of the cart, Grolev’s head and legs were dangling outside. Grolev’s chin was touching his chest. He wasn’t moving and there was a lot of blood in the cart.

Gao Yang thought Grolev was already dead. He slowly reached out his finger and tested if Grolev was breathing. He was relieved when he felt Grolev’s breath.

With Tribo’s help, both of them carried Grolev off the cart and laid him on the flat ground at the side. Gao Yang unclipped Grolev’s vest and found that there were five bullet holes.

It wasn’t correct to say that they were bullet holes. It precisely was one bullet hole and four bullets. Only one was holding an M4 while shooting Grolev and the rest held pistols. The pistol rounds were stopped by the vest and only one round from that rifle went through the vest, penetrating Grolev’s left abdomen.

Although it got through the vest, at the very least the vest had lowered the power of the bullet. At least it didn’t blast through his abdomen.

Lowering the impact of the bullet might not have been a good thing either. This was because the bullet would lose stability after being stopped. It could very possibly have been in a spinning motion when it entered his body. The stopping power would only get stronger this way. It also would speed up Grolev’s mortality. Gao Yang didn’t know how serious his injury was. He could only hope that the vest had stopped most of the impact.

Just when Gao Yang was inspecting Grolev, Grolev slowly woke up.

“How are you? Can you hear me?”

Grolev shook his head slowly and saw Gao Yang in front of him. He panted two breaths before weakly asking, “You brought me outta there?”

Gao Yang worriedly said, “We’re safe, how do you feel?”

“I don’t know, I feel like I’ve broken a few rib bones. Got shot in the belly. Feels like sh*t.”

“I was knocked unconscious when I was hurled into the cart, please, can you tell Hare to be… a little gentler, my head’s hurting like hell.”

Gao Yang heaved a sigh of relief and glared at Tribo. He realized immediately that Tribo couldn’t see his expression and thus said softly, “Tribo, do you know that Grolev wasn’t dead from the shots but was almost killed by your throw? Can you please be careful?”

Tribo smiled in embarrassment and said, “I was in a hurry, didn’t care much.”

Tribo hadn’t finished but both Gao Yang and Tribo’s faces turned grim because they heard a car sound.

They looked at each other and both didn’t say anything. They threw him into the cart holding the head and legs each. Tribo pushed the cart and ran crazily. Gao Yang raised his rifle and prepared for another round of pursuit.

The car shined its lights as it turned around a corner and dashed straight towards Gao Yang’s group. Gao Yang didn’t know how they had found them, but he was sure that they couldn’t outrun a car and thus shouted for Tribo to go the smaller route. The only thing he could do was to think of an idea on how to take care of the car.
