Chapter 8 Files

"We are not just coming to buy stuff. We also need to… see Trainer Elanfa! Could you please notice him?" Fowls waved to Swaydi, asking her to hand over the shell powder.

People drink alcohols, or something very similar to alcohols from Fowls’ universe, here in this world as well. Only this type of drinks usually has side effects to the magic, so wizards normally avoid taking alcohols. Instead they like to take a variety of functional refreshing drinks.

The shell powder Fowls brought was a kind of clam powder made from the top clams in the ocean. It isn’t really a rare type of material, but since it is marked as “Made for Wizards”, it becomes an expensive product on the market.

This powder was one of Fowls’ daily supplies. If he took a below-the-limit amount of the powder with him, it wasn’t against the heir test rules. Now he could use some as a gift.

The magic apprentice at the door looked at the gift and checked the visitors again. Fowls dressed like a decent businessman, and he behaved in the aristocratic-family-educated manner. The young apprentice nodded and went for the magic trainer.

The trainers of Wizard Towers are usually at level eight or above. But this Elanfa was just a level five wizard. Maybe that’s why he got assigned to a small city like Earendur.

Even for a Wizard Tower in an unpopular city, the trainers who are assigned to be in charge of a tower are no general wizards. This Elanfa has either stunning backgrounds or great social abilities with the union members, which is very opposite to the nerdy version of Fowls.

After a short conversation, Fowls knew for sure that Elanfa must be a social expert. Although he could sense Fowls’ magic level when they met, he didn’t show any disrespect. Elanfa quickly started to get to know Fowls about his wizard experience.

Like who was the first teacher of his magic courses, where he went to study magic, what type or levels of magic he learned so far, and where he usually attend the wizard seminars…

These were all kinds of common topics among the wizards. When they meet for the first time, they will typically talk about their career, life, experience, relatives and friends…

Once they find some common interests, they will soon talk more about the topic and get much closer with each other. Wizard strangers can always have long talks in this way.

Fowls used to be very good at this, but unfortunately the former body owner left few resources available to him…

Previous Fowls was a character who cared nothing but magic classics. He barely talked to other people besides his father, a few relatives, some servants, his magic trainer and some workers in the magic stores.

And even in the conversations with these people, there were almost nothing besides the magic-related parts.

Thus when Elanfa switched a few topics, Fowls was very embarrassed that he could join none of them.

Fowls gave up trying to get into the discussion. He smirked on the side and drank the refreshing beverages served by the apprentice.

One might say something wrong or inappropriate if talks too much. When Fowls knew little about the topic, he’d rather keep quiet instead of pretend to be a know-it-all. This might kill the fun of the communication, but normally could lower the guard of the participants. Hiding behind and listening was one of Fowls’ interaction methods.

Elanfa quickly noticed Fowls’ intention, which Fowls was also prepared for. After a few more drinks and small chats, Elanfa decided to find out what exactly Fowls came for.

Fowls smiled and said that he wanted a tour to the Wizard Tower Library.

Because in this universe has no mass-printing technology, a library is relatively hard to find. Almost all the literatures are manuscripts, including the statistics records from the Lord’s office and the news files from the shrines, associations, and commercial unions all over the mainland.

Among them, the library of the Wizard Association is the most comprehensive one. Because there is a magic spell called Inscopy, which allows the caster to perfectly copy the text file at a speed far beyond ordinary people.

Using this magic spell, the Wizard Association has established the largest and most completed library system. The general files are kept in two magic spaces. And the records of local history, geography and cultures will be backed up in the Wizard Towers. As a benefit from the association, wizards can read through these records for free.

Elanfa was surprised when Fowls asked for the library visit, since every wizard can enter the library without permission. But Fowls, a wizard, brought a gift for it.

"I’ve moved to Earendur for almost a month. I should’ve come to visit my predecessors earlier, but unfortunately something happened..." Fowls said and put his hand on his chest.

Elanfa nodded for his compassion. He apparently had heard about the assassination of Fowls. He said, "Magic in Earendur is not doing well. Assante [the master of thieves] and Ferdinand [the master of mercenaries] are having a hard time for business. I guess, you must had made some enemies outside the city…"

Elanfa pointed at somewhere far, "I have heard of the rules of the Medici family. We are all wizards. If there is anything I can help, please let me know... Just consider my favor as a thank you for today’s gift." Elanfa said and took a sip of some clamshell soup.

The Wizard Association is not a supernatural group. They still need large financial investments to support the operation of such a large institution.

As a wizard who has the opportunity to inherit a noble family, he certainly has more value to the association than ordinary wizards.

Clearly Fowls has some advantage to be a wizard as a young patrician. He might have ended his apprenticeship with money donations instead of passing the graduation tests.

It was a pity that the previous Fowls did nothing more with his own advantages. Such a waste of the noble identity!

It was also the reason why Fowls came here today. He needed to use his family background to exchange for benefits. This time he started with something easy.

Fowls followed Elanfa to the second floor of the tower.

As he learned before, the outside of the Wizard Tower looked narrow, but the space inside was actually quite large.

The first floor consisted of a magic store, a living room, and a few bedrooms for accomplices and apprentices. Though the store was named magic store, there were more common customers than wizards.

The second floor was for wizards only. There was a library and a magic boutique shop. Since few wizards came to live in Earendur, the shop barely had any items on the shelves.

But the library shelves were fully packed. Dozens of rows of the bookshelves took almost a hundred square meters of space, staging the beauty of the tower space magic and also the glory of Earendur’s history.

It was almost sunset when they entered the library. The rosy sunshine passed through the narrow window, and got scattered by the exquisite space magic. The light appeared to be crimson; it made the room dim and gloomy.

"Sci Oh Ei Wuh…" Elanfa waved his arm and chanted, intending to use a burst spell to awaken the magic lights on the wall.

Before he could finish the spell, he heard a finger snap. It was Fowls. A ping-pong sized fireball was lit up in the air instantly, and then flew towards the light matrix. The lights were on and the room got extremely bright.

Flash secondary flame bead? ! Elanfa was truly shocked.

The secondary flame bead is just a level-one magic. For wizards that have focus problem, they can’t even use this spell to ignite the combustibles.

But it’s totally different when it’s combined with flash skill. As mentioned before, the level-one secondary flame bead, once attached by a level-three super magic, would have the same casting difficulty as a level-four magic does.

If Fowls could easily use this magic, his wizard level might have reached at least seven or even higher.

If Fowls’ wizard level was higher than Elanfa’s, then either Elanfa might have made a misjudgment about his magic power before, or Fowls purposely hid his power.

It was a good thing that Elanfa wasn’t being condescending when they first met. Elanfa stared at Fowls, who was smiling, and felt that he was not that simple.

Fowls enjoyed the change of Elanfa's facial expression, which was exactly what he wanted. He needed to leave a mysterious impression. It was also a part of his money-making plan.

Of course, it was no flash super magic. It was only a combination of his silent skill, stone skill, and spell simplification.

Before they approached the library entrance, he had figured that Elanfa might use a spell to ignite the lights, so he prepared the secondary flame bead silently along the walk. When Elanfa started chanting, Fowls’ spell was just ready.

"Because of the assassin's attack, I’ve spent a long time studying the super-magic skills. Now I’m finally making some progress." Fowls explained properly.

He couldn’t be too secretive to get others jealous or alert.

Elanfa smiled. Fowls just successfully made some impressions in his mind!

****

Fowls needed to check the history records of Earendur.

The collection of this type of books in the library accounts for at least 30%, including travel notes, geography reports, climate records, memorabilia, and various official investigate files.

These original books have been archived in different official organizations around Earendur for occasional reviews. The Wizard Association routinely collects a copy of them and sorts them by its own methods.

A very important daily task for the tower wizards is to enrich and complete these file materials.

Search for the keywords??

"After Year 7760 of Paweier's calendar", "Captain William Gent", "Pirates", "Treasure maps", "Mysterious Figures"…

Fowls scanned through the heavy books in front of him. As a person who had a gift of photographic memory, the pages were now all in Fowls head.

Fowls felt like he had been seeing a documentary movie of the past 100 years of Earendur…
