GO TO THE THRONE BEFORE YOU USE THE PHONE

O that you would bless me indeed and enlarge my territory,

Let your hand be with me,

Keep me from harm,

So that I would be free from pain

Looks familiar, right? Yes, it is the prayer of Jabez (1st Chronicle 4:10). As little as you think this prayer is, its magnitude and power was yet so great that it spun his future and generation around. You can imagine, from destined Lazarus to a realised Bill Gates!

Generally, most teens take for granted what is really important. One among the many issues forsaken is prayer. The magnitude and power of prayer is not recognized or realised. Teens fail to understand that this power cannot be measured; it can only be felt and seen in the wondrous works of God in our lives.

It is a norm that when people especially teens encounter life's problems, the first person they think of to solve their problems is a friend then maybe a sibling or a parent. Most times, going to God in prayer is the very last resort.

I confess, I was like that too until God opened my eyes by using one of my friends to let me in on this fact. The truth is, telling another mortal like you when you have a problem does not solve it because the person is as helpless as you are. If you don't put it in your heart and at the back of your mind that in times of problems or any tribulation, your first help is God (easily accessed through prayers), you would never be able to truly solve your problem(s) totally. Besides, why bother ranting off your problems to people when some don't care while most are happy you've got the problem?

Don't run around seeking counsel from just anyone. Pray first, asking the Lord whether it is His will that you go to another human being for counsel or whether He desires to counsel you Himself. God is not obligated to anoint what He doesn't initiate. So often people run to others without following the guidance and leadership of the Holy Spirit, and it never bears good, lasting fruit. When you are in trouble, go to the throne before you use the phone. It's not wrong to seek counsel but pray and allow the Lord to lead and guide you through the Holy Spirit. Let Him choose the right counsellor for you. Just because a person has been through what you are going through or is a close personal friend, does not mean that individual is the right counsellor for you.

Another issue is that of thinking that you pray to God only about big issues. The same way sin is sin whether big or small is the same way issues are all the same whether trivial or heavy, from praying about your missing pen to praying about the recovery of someone. All issues are same in God's sight and He answers any request we render him. All He waits for is that little prayer which comes from a faithful and believing heart. Remember what Jesus says about asking (Matt 7:7) and having faith as little as a mustard seed (Matthew 17:20)… He loves children and would answer them. Hey! Since we are in the transition stage between children and adults, we could jolly well grab into this bonus! Yippee!

So, when next trouble comes, even before it builds to your picking up the phone to talk to someone who might not even listen, dial straight to the throne through the J-E-S-U-S switch board. After all, didn't he say all of us who have issues should come to him? (Matthew 11:28)
