Danny deliberated for a short while before he stood up slowly. He didn’t reach for the handgun on the glass table.
Kevin started to smile before he stood up as well, “Thank you for your generosity.”
Kevin then stretched his hand out but Danny didn’t reach out to shake his hand. Danny indifferently said, “No one is allowed to harm those we protect within our territory.”
“Of course, we will definitely respect this rule. I guarantee the Destroyers won’t trespass into your territory to kill anyone. However, I need to reiterate that we will take action on those who are under your protection once they are out of your territory. No doubt, we will try our best to not hurt the Dark Knights men as it’s unnecessary. We have the utmost respect for the Dark Knights.”
Danny turned around and calmly announced, “We’re leaving!”
Wang Wen Jiang was very surprised. He wanted to say something but decided not to say a word when he was about to open his mouth. Ye Ming was astonished as well but ultimately he only stared at Kevin with hatred. He then pulled Yang Yi and they trailed behind Danny.
The two men guarding at the entrance took lead and acted as the vanguard in front of Danny and the rest of the team followed right behind. Once the team left the building, those who were on guard outside followed them towards where the vehicles were parked.
Danny finally stopped after he reached his vehicle. He then turned towards Yang Yi and said, “You will be in my car.”
Yang Yi got into Danny’s car and the car moved straight onto the highway. After traveling some distance, Danny let out a sigh and turned towards Yang Yi to say, “You must get rid of Kevin in the future if there is an opportunity.”
Yang Yi gently replied, “I will.”
Danny stopped looking at Yang Yi and helplessly said, “I should apologize to you.”
“Eh?! Why?”
Yang Yi was rather confused. Thus, Danny calmly said, “If I agreed to the Bus’s first solution, both you and Kate would be fine now and there would no longer be any future trouble. Sadly, now the Destroyers will continue to pursue the both of you until the two of you are dead. At this point, it’s no longer an issue of money to the Destroyers but rather it concerns their continued existence.”
Yang Yi didn’t interrupt Danny, so he continued to speak, “I couldn’t accept the first method. Though it’s in your best interest, this matter implicates the reputation of the Dark Knights as well. So, I had to force the Destroyers to pay a heavy price for their actions. Therefore, I can only accept the second method. As a result, it pushed both you and Kate into an even more dangerous position.”
Yang Yi quietly said, “I understand.”
Danny solemnly said, “I want to apologize to you because of this. I hope you understand that as the Captain of the Dark Knights, I must prioritize the interest of the Dark Knights.”
“I understand that as well.”
Danny nodded and seriously said, “The Destroyers are a hitman organization, it will not enter into a dispute over personal feelings. What the Bus has done has exceeded the bottom-line of hitmen. Even if it wasn’t a dispute over personal feelings, there was no need for him to kill his men. He has eliminated everyone who was involved in the matter. Do you know the meaning behind his actions?”
“That he is very ruthless?”
Danny bitterly shook his head, “Very ruthless? Every single person in the underworld is ruthless but there are very few who could be as heartless as he is. Why did he kill his men? Since one of his men was caught, he knew we would definitely obtain enough clues to find him. So he didn’t try to run or hid. To avoid a war with us, he used the simplest, quickest and most cost-efficient way to resolve the matter.”
Yang Yi candidly said, “He sure is shrewd.”
Danny replied calmly, “You’re right. He is definitely shrewd. Since he is willing to apologize publicly and promise not to violate the rules set by the Dark Knights, it means he doesn’t care about fame and money. He has given up on killing you now because he won’t be receiving any money for doing it.1 A hitman mission has a time limit. Since he has killed his own men, this shows that he has no concept of loyalty or camaraderie. It also shows that he doesn’t care how others view or perceive him.”
After taking a deep breath, Danny continued, “A person as shrewd as he is would be absolutely terrifying if he was, in fact, a hitman. If it was the past me, I would not have hesitated to eliminate him even if we had to fight to the last man with the Destroyers. I would never be able to sleep if such a terrifying enemy was left alive.”
Yang Yi didn’t say anything since he believed Danny would explain it to him.
“I didn’t choose to kill the Bus this time because he had made his position clear. Given how things had turned out, he will never seek revenge on the Dark Knights. The reason is simple. For a person who doesn’t care about anything, would he understand the notion of revenge? So, will he seek revenge when it’s meaningless to him?
Yang Yi nodded, “I understand, it makes a lot of sense. From the very beginning, Kevin made his attitude clear despite not saying anything directly. It was unnecessary for him to say anything, to begin with.”
Danny smiled bitterly, “Hitmen always stay hidden. It’s impossible to find a hitman organization and thoroughly eliminate them. So my aim this time was to eliminate the few hitmen who participated in this affair. The Bus has fulfilled my aim. Anyway, the consequence of going to war with the Destroyers in the coming days will be unimaginable. The Dark Knights will have to face an enemy which hides in shadows. With a sigh, Danny sullenly continued, “Yang Yi, I’m old. If it was the past, I wouldn’t have hesitated to get rid of the Bus. Though he said the hostility had come to an end, I would still kill him. I wouldn’t be able to sleep well leaving such a dangerous enemy alive. Now that I am old…”
Yang Yi answered warily, “You have made a wise decision.”
Danny smiled bitterly, “We are not hitmen and businessmen. As a group, we started to make wise decisions rather than picking a tough stance. Evidently, I have lost my courage. Yang Yi, I have a wife and children. Moreover, all my brothers have their own families. Thus, I have lost the courage to fight to the last men with the Destroyers. It was my initial intention though.”
