Yang Yi definitely would never disclose his relationship with Li Fan. As he was trying to think of a lie to cover up the whole matter, Xiao Ran elbowed the fatty. She then cautiously asked Yang Yi, “What about your driver’s license…”

“My driver’s license was revoked.”

Xiao Ran was immediately apologetic. She softly said, “I am sorry. I will compensate you. Fatty, lend me ten thousand RMB. Wait, lend me thirty thousand instead.”

The fatty exclaimed in surprise, “Gosh! You crashed my car and yet you are borrowing money from me?”

Xiao Ran turned her head and spoke while gritting her teeth, “Not like I am not going to return it! Quickly use your hand phone to transfer him the money!”

Yang Yi smiled while waving his hand, “Forget it. I don’t want the ten thousand RMB anymore. So, you don’t have to borrow money.”

Xiao Ran looked at Yang Yi and asked in surprise, “Why don’t you want it? I need to compensate you since I caused you driver’s license to be revoked. That’s why I am giving you thirty thousand RMB. Otherwise, tell me how much do you want?”

Yang Yi laughed, “Just forget it. I was short on cash just now, but that will soon no longer be the case. As for my driver’s license, it wouldn’t make a difference whether I have it since I will no longer need it in the future. So, don’t worry about it.”

The fatty immediately raised his thumb and happily said, “Bro, you are chivalrous!”

Xiao Ran glared at the fatty with dissatisfaction. She then look at Yang Yi and said, “Why would you no longer need your driver’s license?”

“I will be going overseas. My domestic driver’s license would be useless. I just need to get a new one overseas.”

“Going overseas? Which country are you going to?”

“Most likely England.”

“I am currently studying in England, as you guessed correctly a short bit ago. I will be graduating from Trinity College soon. After that, I need to quickly return to the States.”

“Is that so? That’s just unfortunate.”

Yang Yi was sincerely laughing. Although he was already aware of Xiao Ran’s identity, this was not the type of matter one should go about flaunting.

Xiao Ran spoke while taking out her hand phone. “Pass me your contact number. I will definitely give you the money. Promises should always be kept.”

Presently, Yang Yi needed to leave the country. He was no longer cash-strapped since the car would soon be sold. The car was quite valuable as it still had a road value of a million dollars. Moreover, he had thrown in an additional fifty thousand to modify the car. Even if he needed to sell it off in a rush, he could still sell it for more than a million. That’s why it didn’t really matter whether Xiao Ran gave him ten thousand or thirty thousand dollars.

Although money was important, all men were the same. Regardless of the era, beautiful ladies were a scarcity. Yang Yi’s intention to wait was solely for the purpose of this contact number.

With great joy, he quickly exchanged contact numbers. After which, the fatty who was waiting impatiently at the side said, “Done. We need to leave now. I will need to retrieve my car from the carpark. Why don’t the both of you go and grab a meal? I can retrieve the car on my own.”

Xiao Ran impatiently asked, “What’s the rush? How am I going to return after you leave?”

The fatty bitterly said, “Lady Xiao, look at how handsome this brother is. As a guy, even I think he is handsome! What about his character? Very good! You have remained single all this while, and yet the first guy you found is a scum. Since fate has brought both of you together, why don’t the both of you try dating? Brother, do you have a girlfriend?”

Yang Yi immediately shook his head. “Nope. I am still searching.”

The fatty directly patted Xiao Ran. “Great! This is a godsend. Why don’t the both of you start by having a meal together? I will excuse myself now.”

Xiao Ran snapped, “Please stop! You are not allowed to inform your mom what happened today. Also, aren’t you pursuing me? Did you have a change of heart? You are not a good person nor any different from the scumbag inside.”

The fatty recoiled in dissatisfaction. “Come on, you are three years older than me! It was just a childhood crush on you. Now, you are beautiful lady I admire…”

Xiao Ran raised her hand in an attempt to hit the fatty, but he retreated quickly while loudly exclaiming, “You are not allowed to use my car ever again! Not even as a passenger!”

The fatty left just like that. Xiao Ran turned to look at Yang Yi and gently spoke in embarrassment. “He was a friend of mine. My dad has a very good relationship with his dad. We were neighbours in the past. The car was his and I used the car without informing his family members. The car was his favourite. So, he immediately reported it missing the moment it was gone. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have been arrested. I am truly sorry.”

Yang Yi laughed. “It’s fine. Where do you want to go now? I can take you there with my car. There won’t be a need for you to wait at the bus stop and you can on fare too.”

“Let’s have a meal before we go. It will be my treat. I still have money for a meal.”

“Wait. We can eat later. I left my car at the roadside. It will be troublesome if it got towed away.”

What transpired next occurred smoothly without any surprises. Both of them hired a cab back the spot they had met. As expected, there was a fine on Yang Yi’s car. Nevertheless, he was still lucky it was not towed. Subsequently they took Yang Yi’s car, searching for a place to eat.

Yang Yi had originally thought his heart will remain resolute, yet, as his hands gripped the steering wheel, a sense of uncertainty started to sprout.

Even though Yang Yi would not change his mind, it had reached a point where he had no choice but to leave, even if he didn’t want to. Moreover, he was about to leave a home where he had stayed for more than ten years, never to return. How could he not have even the slightest bit of anxiousness?

What Yang Yi was most reluctant to part with was his car. He had only owned the car for less than six months. Over this half-a-year time, Yang Yi had been pondering how he could modify his car everyday. He had only recently managed to modify and fine-tune his car to an optimal condition, yet he would have to sell it before he even managed to warm-up the steering wheel. How could his heart not ache?

Yang Yi was a different person the moment he had entered his car.  He was neither talkative nor laughing. Holding on to the steering wheel, he sighed heavily instead. Xiao Ran curiously asked, “What happened? It seems like matter of life and death.”

Xiao Ran’s observation was pretty sharp. Yang Yi smiled bitterly. “Indeed. I have spent a lot of effort on this car. Now that I am about to leave, I am truly unwilling to sell it.”

“Why must you sell it? You are just going overseas. There is no need for you to sell it. Just leave it here. It’s not like you wouldn’t be driving again once you are back. Just let your family to take care of it. It’s fine as long they occasionally start the engine.”

For some reason, Yang Yi chose to explain. “I don’t have any family members. Moreover, I wouldn’t be able to return.”

Yang Yi immediately became alert again the moment those words left his mouth.

What was wrong with him? He had blathered in front of a beautiful lady whom he will soon be destined to never meet again. Regardless of what may happen before he left, he shouldn’t have lost control of his emotions and revealed the truth.

“You don’t have any family members?”

“Yes. Both my parents have passed away and I don’t have any other relatives. I am all alone.”

“I am sorry.”

“Don’t worry about it.”

Xiao Ran cautiously asked, “Are you going to migrate than? Or are you a foreign citizen going back to your home country?”

Yang Yi froze for a moment. He was originally a Chinese citizen, but it was converted to British citizenship when he was still underage. After his parents passed away, he reverted to Chinese citizenship when he returned to China. However, he would not be able to pass as any country’s citizen after he left this time around.

In the future, there was a possibility that Yang Yi would not be holding any citizenship. There was also a possibility he might hold citizenship in a lot of countries. Ultimately, his citizenship would most likely be fake, even if he had the appearance of holding any.

“I am a Chinese citizen, but I will most likely be migrating.”

After Yang Yi gave Xiao Ran this vague answer, she asked in displeasure, “Are you thinking of migrating to England? I am a U.S citizen. As a matter of fact, I don’t really want to migrate. Nevertheless, it’s not really a big deal. It’s just a matter of citizenship only anyway.”

Just a matter of citizenship? It sounded so simple and straightforward when Xiao Ran said it because she only saw it as a difference in the type of passport one owned.

However, Yang Yi distinguished a citizenship as more than just a passport. More importantly to him, it was the sense of belonging.

Although he had yet to leave the country, Yang Yi had already felt that he doesn’t have an ancestry anymore.

Just as Yang Yi was about to get even more depressed, he spotted a restaurant.

It was a very small, family-style noodle house. Nonetheless, it was a restaurant Yang Yi used to frequent. His mood became even more complicated after coincidentally spotting the familiar restaurant.

Why was whatever he saw giving him a sense of despair?

The taste wasn’t anything special to being with. He had only patronized it frequently due to convenience, yet it was giving him a sense of familiarity and the reluctance to part with it.

Yang Yi was upset and contemptible of his current mindset. Given the type of life he would need to face in the future, he shouldn’t harbor any sense of yearning or sentimentality.

Yang Yi hated himself for not being more resolute and decisive. After which, he stepped on the car break and spoke decisively. “Let’s have noodles here.”

“Sure. Is there a parking spot?”

Xiao Ran was evidently concerned for Yang Yi. She didn’t continue the discussion any further.

Although he wouldn’t be able to finish it, Yang Yi had still ordered two bowls of noodles because he would like to savour the two different flavours. Although his departure was still a month away, a sense of urgency had begun to emerge within him.

Due to him being emotionally unstable, Yang Yi had not paid much attention to the beauty sitting in front of him. While casually eating her noodles, Xiao Ran had abruptly said, “I will be leaving soon too. I am leaving tomorrow.”

“Erm.”

“Originally I had no intention of leaving after returning this time, or at the very least, I had intended to stay here for a while. Sadly…”

Xiao Ran was unable to finish her sentence as she tried to suppress herself. She then gloomily continued, “My first love was a bloody fiasco. Let’s not mention the fact that we were dating online or the relationship was long distance, it had to be that my lover was actually married.”

Yang Yi half-heartedly replied, “You should be content. It’s already pretty good that you never ended up in his bed. Uh, did you just say it was your first love?”

Xiao Ran was slightly upset when she looked at Yang Yi. “Did you even pay attention to what I said? So what if it was my first love?”

Yang Yi shook his head. “There is nothing to it. I am just curious how this was your first love given how beautiful you are.”

“There are a lot of people who are pursuing me, but I am not interested in any of them. Well, most annoying of all are those who thought they were handsome but were, in fact, sissys.”

“Allow me to guess, that’s how you fell in love with that fella? This means your judgement skill is pretty poor. You need to be sharper at judging people in the future.”

“Do you even have any social skills? Don’t you see I am very depressed right now?”

Xiao Ran was extremely angry. Yang Yi sighed, “You shouldn’t be upset. Instead, don’t you think you had an enjoyable year chatting with that fella? Although I hadn’t personally witnessed it, I guess you were very happy right? Not only did you not suffer any loss, you even broke his nose. You also caused him to be, in short, miserable. All in all, you shouldn’t be feeling upset. You ought to be feeling happy and fortunate instead.”

Xiao Ran looked at the bowl while stirring it with her chopstick. After thinking it over for a while, she suddenly smiled. “What you say sounds reasonable.”

Although Yang Yi was feeling heavy-hearted, he was also feeling as if the spring wind has arrived the moment he saw Xiao Ran’s smile.

After taking a deep breath, Xiao Ran rubbed her eyes and tenderly asked, “Let’s change the topic. Why are you going to England? Going there to study?”

“It’s for work. I am going there to look for a job.”

“Aren’t you going to further your study?”

“I have graduated.”

“That’s fast. How old are you?”

“22.”

“You graduated at 22? Which university? Sorry, I am interrogating you. I am just curious. You can choose not to answer.”

“Qingbei University, majoring in International Relations. I did graduate slightly earlier.”

Within Yang Yi’s heart, he proclaimed that it was actually a double degree in International Relations and History & International Relations. As a matter of fact, there is very minimal difference between the two.

Xiao Ran was full of admiration. “I am 21 and currently a sophomore. As I have told you before, I am in Trinity College of Cambridge. Once you are in England, you can look for me and we can go sightseeing. You need to believe me. My driving skills aren’t that bad. I have even hit 280 on a race track.”

“The race track and public road are two totally different aspects.”

Xiao Ran pouted, “That was just an accident. I was so used to driving in England that I haven’t gotten accustomed to driving here yet.”

Yang Yi had originally thought he wouldn’t be able to finish the two bowls of noodles, yet he had finished both. He just wiped his mouth with a napkin instead of replying to Xiao Ran. He then smiled. “Today was really tiring. You should go home and rest early. I will send you home.”

Xiao Ran looked at Yang Yi and spoke in a very feminine tone. “I thought you would invite me out to have some fun.”

“Just forget it. You will be leaving for U.S. tomorrow. It’s very tiring to fly.”

“Now that I have thought about it, I don’t actually need to leave. In any case, I came back during the holiday break to… Anyhow, I will return as per my original plan. The return ticket had already been bought anyway.”

Yang Yi chuckled before replying apologetically, “Sadly I will be leaving tomorrow. So, I will be going home to have a good rest. I am truly sorry.”

With a sigh, Xiao Ran became less keen and softly said, “That’s fine. You can send me back. I can then pass you the money. I will pass it to you whether you want it or not. I don’t like to be indebted to anyone.”

“We can discuss this later. Don’t you have a phone now?”

Yang Yi was well aware that Xiao Ran was interested in him. It might even develop into something more if they continued to interact. Regrettably, the relationship was doomed to fail. At most, they would only have a month’s time together. Therefore, it was best not to develop the relationship any further.

He could still choose to be capricious, if he had no idea what the future held. Since he was well aware of what lay ahead, he would be a scumbag for hurting her, and Yang Yi wasn’t one.

They only had a bowl of noodles for a short while together.

Actually it was two bowls of noodles. Yang Yi by then had completed his transformation.

In the afternoon, he was still a fresh graduate whose focus was leisure, yet it had entirely changed by the time it was evening. Yang Yi had come to terms with a future full of uncertainty and excitement.

Also within the timeframe of these two bowls of noodles, Yang Yi buried deep in his heart a range of emotions like yearning, regret, and depression.

Although emotions would never disappear and they were difficult to control, controlling them was not an impossible task.

This would have been a difficult for normal people. For someone like Yang Yi, who had gone through a childhood filled with loneliness and despair, he had accumulated all the necessary elements to complete the transformation. Hence, the transformation was easily achieved.
