11 – Entering the Base

With the dynamic mission completed, his objective for engaging in this battle was considered to be half met. Luo You was still pleasantly surprised to find an excess evolution point inside him.

There were two ways for Evolvers to become stronger. One was through reward points, the other was through evolution points. Reward points were obtainable via the Cube missions. For instance, Luo You had just completed a B-rank mission and got a B-rank reward point as compensation. With it, he could go to the Cube to redeem high-tech weapons, drugs, materials, bloodlines, et cetera. But all these had one thing in common, that is, they were all classified as external things.

Take weapons, materials and pharmaceuticals as an example, there was no need to elaborate on them being a type of external power. And things like bloodlines were in fact also classified as a type of ‘external thing’ implanted into the body. It was equivalent to remodeling the body, to turning a person powerful via an external power.

However, evolution points were different. Their purpose lied in the body’s genetic evolution. Basic enhancements such as the Power Enhancement and the Dynamic Vision Enhancement, and even deeper level ancient genes, which were capable of stimulating terrifying skills, these all belonged to the ranks of genetic evolution and were a type of ‘internal things’ pre-existent in the human body.

There were different methods for acquiring reward points and evolution points. The reward points could only be obtained via the Cube missions, but there were quite a few ways to get evolution points. For example, high-intensity battles, day to day painstaking training, or even the eruption of potential in near death situations, these were all viable methods to acquire evolution points.

The world’s powerhouses had different opinions with regards to the effectiveness of the enhancements provided by evolution points and reward points. There were people who heavily relied on reward points, ‘arming’ themselves with a good deal of high-tech weapons, or superstrong bloodlines. There were other people who preferred evolution points, feeling like strengthening their genes via constantly accumulating experience in battles was the right way to go. There were still others who combined the two, with the two methods complementing each other. Each person was different and had their own considerations. Therefore, the choice they made was also different.

Of course, Luo You didn’t concern himself with this. He was currently very poor. He was short on reward points and evolution points. Therefore, he had no qualifications to consider the direction of his development. Even his survival was an open question.

“Don’t… Don’t move!” Suddenly, the sound of a gun being cocked came from behind Luo You, followed by the slightly fearful and shaky voice of a man.

Luo You turned around and looked at the panicked faces. The captain was pointing a gun at him. A good deal of the surrounding men were closing in on him. He asked faintly: “Is this how you repay your benefactor?”

The captain’s body shook. He looked at the gun pointing at Luo You in his hand, then looked at his men doing the same, and lastly, looked at the fierce wound overflowing with blood on Luo You’s shoulder with a complicated gaze. The other party was bitten by the Nightmare in order to protect him…

The captain unconsciously lowered his firearm. Shortly after, he gave the men behind him the sign to also lower their weapons, before saying in a muffled voice: “Sorry. It’s just that your strength is really scary, it’s just like a…”

Seeing that the captain stopped speaking in the middle of the sentence, Luo You gave a fleeting smile and supplemented: “Just like a monster’s?”

The captain’s body shook and he silently nodded his head. That’s right, just like a monster’s! To tear into three Nightmares as well as the Nightmare Leader with a human’s body, if one didn’t personally witness this, then one might think that it was part of the plot from a novel from the old era.

“This strength does indeed make people sick.” Luo You made a rather profound statement. Just a moment ago, the power he had used to instakill the Nightmares was the level-1 Powerburst. This skill wasn’t something which he had evolved on his own. Its tale and that of the two autonomously evolved innate skills had the same origin. This tale, which took place in the 1st Year of Collapse, he was unwilling to recall it…

Although the captain no longer pointed the gun at Luo You, but he still kept his vigilance. He said: “Let’s not beat around the bush. Tell me your purpose and what you want from us. If it’s supplies that you want, then I have to apologize, but we cannot give them to you! Our base has already run out of water and food quite a few days ago! If this batch of supplies was to be damaged or lost, then more than half of the people in our base would die! This is my bottom line! If you’re determined to snatch them from us, then even if you’re our savior, and even if you’re a monster, I’m sorry, but I still will fight you to the bitter end!”

“I don’t want your supplies.” Luo You reassured the captain.

The captain heaved a sigh of relief, but he still asked vigilantly: “What do you want? Apart from the supplies, we only have…”

The captain unconsciously looked at the SUV fitted with the machine gun turret. It was his baby, and had accompanied him in his trips and fights for several years. In a sense, this vehicle was even more valuable than the supplies. Although giving this vehicle to their savior as a present would be right and proper, but it would make them feel as if they lost a limb.

“I don’t want your cars either.” Luo You reassured the captain once more.

The captain looked at Luo You in astonishment, and then asked once more: “What do you want then? If you’re not interested in supplies nor cars, then that only leaves some smelly middle-aged men. Could it be that you…”

When the captain started to get goose bumps and chills up his spine, Luo You suddenly said calmly: “I want to fight alongside you.”

“Now you know what happened.” Inside a simple base. The captain had returned with a fleet fully loaded with supplies. After the famished survivors were given the supplies, he convened his companions and gave them an account of the current situation.

A young man said hesitantly: “You mean to say that the person over there had single-handedly killed nine Nightmares along with an intelligent Nightmare Leader and had rescued you. Meanwhile, there’s still a team of Evolvers with an average strength higher than his rushing over in order to annihilate us?”

“Yes, he told me so personally.” The captain pointed at Luo You, who was checking on the base’s defensive layout not far away.

In his paranoia, the young man came closer to the captain and said in a low voice: “I feel like he’s lying. I was once lucky enough to come across an Evolver, whom I asked about the Cube missions. They hadn’t mentioned team battles.”

The captain also started to feel a bit worried: “I also have never before heard about team battles. However, there are too many secrets about the Cube. There is no way to tell if there is such a thing. In any case, even if he lied, what would be his purpose? He doesn’t want the SUV nor the supplies. As poor as we are, is there anything of ours that he might want?”

“Women! The young man said in a low voice. The word startled the captain, and the trace of trust that Luo You had just established started to disintegrate.

Sex was a physiological need that humans had, particularly in the wilderness. The days were boiling hot and the nights were freezing cold. There were monsters that could threaten one’s life at any moment. In the wilderness, one’s nerves were always stretched taut and every cell in one’s body exuded hunger and thirst. Without a channel to give vent, one would go mad before long. Naturally, sex was the best way to give vent.

This was a far too common occurrence in the wilderness. Formidable Evolvers and forces lacking in women would go to survivor bases to kidnap women. Those with a bit of conscience would first dine and wine the women upon taking them away, before finally proceeding to the more fun activity. It was also not uncommon for those without conscience to rape and even kill the women there and then.

Reportedly, there was an Evolver with a particular hobby. The Evolver would first chop off the head of any woman he kidnapped, then use the mouth and the broken windpipe of their severed head to give vent. For this reason, he collected several hundred women’s heads, preserving them in formalin. The heads would be normally put on display, but when in the mood, he would choose one and use it.

Similar things would happen every day in the wilderness. One couldn’t judge a book by its cover, this statement was so much more true in this era where people lacked humanity. So long as someone dwelt in the wilderness, then no matter how harmless that someone looked on the outside, they were bound to be a ferocious beast on the inside!

The captain only now became aware of the danger and he broke out in a cold sweat. He had brought an Evolver to the base on his own accord. If by any chance the other party had ill intentions, then he would become the sinner who ushered a disaster into the base!
