13 – A Surprise Attack Late at Night

Luo You did’t budge, still just slanting his eye.

Ling’s speech was very heroic, full of vitality and hope, but so what?

To change everything? If people staying in the wilderness were to hear that, they would laugh their head’s off.

The mysterious Cubes were spread all over the world. Not only did they periodically transport a good deal of mutants into the world, but most importantly, they emitted a strange energy force field with a powerful destructive effect on life forms. Why did the natural system of the once blue crumble crumble? Why did the rivers dry up, the trees wither, and the forests and grasslands turn into deserts? Everything was the doing of this energy force field.

Therefore, humanity could only gather in far away places, like the major cities with Walls of Life, that were located hundreds and even thousands of kilometers away from the Cubes.

It could be said that if this force field was not dispelled, then Earth’s natural system could not be restored and it would always be a wasteland. The only way to dispel the force field was to destroy the Cubes, which was a pipe dream. If humanity had a way to destroy the Cubes, then the old era wouldn’t ended, nor would the so-called Age of Collapse have arrived.

Remarks like those of Ling, Luo You had heard them before. These remarks were commonly expressed by the so-called ‘thinkers’, who stood for lofty ideals and freedom while hiding behind the Walls of Life, who enjoyed the cities’ ambrosia while singing epics about transforming the Apocalypse.

Lofty ideals? Freedom? Those were just lies made up by a bunch of greenhouse flowers sheltered behind the walls! They bathed in the sun, ate bread that would never come to an end, drank a brew of honey with sweet and mellow crystal clear water, lived their lives without having to rack their brains about how to survive, spent a lot of time on singing and bemoaning, praised God in their hearts, and thought that the world was still full of hope, and then would tell you: “We, humans, are noble and mighty creatures, and we don’t fear the Apocalypse.”

Regarding these self-righteous wimps, the wilderness never minded showing them, these livestock ‘raised’ behind the wall, how ridiculous they were.

Something like this had happened before. Some ‘brave’ thinkers had gone outside the Wall of Life in an attempt to change the world with their believes and views.

The outcome? Their clothing were taken away by wilderness’ refugees, their pockets were emptied, the books with their thoughts recorded in them were used as toilet paper, and all of their holes, whether they were men or women, were penetrated by the lustful refugees. Finally, their corpses were thrown into the wilderness, before being turned into mutants’ feces.

At this point, what of their believes? What of the noble and mighty humans? They were just talking out of their asses…

Luo You no longer cared about Ling. In fact, he didn’t even intended to remember the lass’ name. Although she was indeed very pretty, and though to people like Luo You, who wandered the wilderness all year round and even rarely saw female mutants, Ling’s looks were such as to overthrow cities and ruin states.

But so what? In the Apocalypse, being pretty wasn’t an advantage, but rather a disadvantage. Just like a brightly colored butterfly landing on haystack would become the focus of all the predators, so would a pretty women become the focus of all the men.

Luo You had every reason to believe that it was only a matter of time before her life became pitiful, before being quickly extinguished along with the so-called dream and heroic speech!

After exploring the entire survivor base, Luo You discovered that besides the piled up earth wall, only a few dilapidated and abandoned buildings were of use. If the enemy team lacked experience in urban warfare, then guerrilla warfare could be employed.

In the evening, a room was arranged for Luo You. The layout of the room was extremely simple, consisting of a bed with a tattered quilt.

However, when it came to this countryside survivor base, the room was already high-end. The other people had to sleep in tents, with several people sharing a single quilt on the cold nights. For them, the bed and quilt solely enjoyed by Luo You could be described as luxury.

But Luo You didn’t enjoy this hospitality. He hadn’t lied down on the bed, he hadn’t even touched the quilt on the bed. Instead, he silently walked past the window, and sat down in the corner. He put the desert eagle in the most convenient place, hugged the Rail Gun Sniper Rifle, leaned against the wall and closed his eyes.

The people of the survivor base didn’t trust Luo You, nor did Luo You trust them. He wouldn’t touch anything prepared by them for fear of entering in contact with some concealed viruses or parasites. Things like viruses and parasites were extremely deadly once they entered the body via the skin.

Luo You was a light sleeper, his powerful sense of awareness always probing his surroundings. At the first sign of trouble, he would promptly enter battle mode. The many years spent in the wilderness had given birth to an innate vigilance in Luo You. He usually slept by leaning against hard objects, so that his back would be to a certain degree protected from sneak attacks.

As for him hugging the Rail Gun Sniper Rifle, it was to increase his emergency response capability as well as perhaps give him an indistinct sense of security, to which he might be oblivious.

Late at night, even though the Milky Way was bright. Nevertheless, it was still cold. The temperature was below zero. It was enough to freeze the air exhaled by people. Currently, Luo You had his eyes closed. His formidable physical aptitude plus the cloak and the bandages wouldn’t let him catch a cold.

Luo You’s eyes were tightly closed, his breathing was steady, yet strangely, his breathing suddenly shook and his abstruse rose-red eyes opened slowly under the shadow of the cloak, alike a ferocious wolf waking in the middle of the night.

Without any indication, Luo You suddenly pushed vigorously against the wall behind his back. The tremendous force gave rise to cracks on the surface of the wall. He took advantage of the recoil to rush forward to reach the front of the door in a breath, then kicked at the wooden door and split it in twain. The door and a person moving stealthily outside the door were sent flying with that kick.

In the next moment, before the uninvited guests outside the door responded, Luo You stepped on the person whom he had kicked and pressed the Rail Gun Sniper Rifle against that person’s head, before immediately after taking out the desert eagle and pointing it at two people, who were overwhelmed by the situation, standing to the side.

Luo You looked sideways at the captain, who had a bloodied face from the kick, and said indifferently: “It seems like you don’t trust me.”

The captain coughed up a mouthful of blood, pointed at the Rail Gun Sniper Rifle pressed against his head, and said with a miserable smile: “Right back at you.”

“Whether I’m deceiving you or not, you still have no other choice.” Light shone onto Luo You’s back from a window. The shadow cast by the cloak over his face was particularly dense, yet alike a terrifying beast, the pair of rose-red eyes flashed with a strange fierce glint in the darkness.

“Fuck, even mounting a surprise attack in the middle of the night is useless. Why did I have to run into a monster like you?” The captain seemed to have given up on his futile resistance as he let Luo You step on his chest, coughing up blood in between his ragged breaths.

“If you haven’t run into me, then you wouldn’t even have the opportunity to mount this surprise attack tonight.”

After listening to Luo You’s rather meaningful words and recalling the scene of Luo You helping them to fight off the Nightmares, the captain inexplicably burst into laughter. Along with the laughter came a rapid stream of tears. It was unknown whether he was laughing at Luo You’s sense of humor or his ungratefulness.
