5 – Race Against Time

Whenever the Cube distributed its missions, in order to prevent the participants from running around in disarray like headless chickens, it would temporarily open something akin to a compass in the participants’ minds, giving them directions to the mission sites.

Currently, based on the ‘compass’, Luo You was heading for the target of this mission.

According to the institutions, Luo You and the others were twenty kilometers away from the target of the mission. It was not considered to be very far, at least not for people with Luo You’s physique. He could easily cross this distance by having a forty minute jog. If he hurried, then he could arrive within twenty minutes.

It must be remembered that Luo You wasn’t alone this time. Although Arnold was an Evolver with a rather good physique and had redeemed the Giant bloodline which substantially increased his physical ability, allowing him to keep up with Luo You, but the other five could not do the same. They were, of course, ordinary people. Although the harsh environment of the Apocalypse made them stronger than humans in the old era, yet not by much. There was no way they could keep up with the speed of an Evolver like Luo You. They hand’t ran for long, yet were already out of breath.

Originally, Luo You had no intentions of taking care of these people. People in the wilderness had the habit of only caring about their own lives, other people’s lives were worthless to them and could casually be disposed off. Luo You was the same regarding people holding him back. He wouldn’t mind letting these people die here.

However, Arnold had stopped halfway, and then went to take care of the people who had fallen behind, forcing Luo You to stop.

Luo You stopped not because he cared about Arnold, but purely because this mission was a team battle. Besides, the Cube had judged them to be at a disadvantage. As an Evolver who had experienced two missions, Arnold’s fighting strength could not be ignored, especially in a team battle where they were in an inferior position. Therefore, Luo You could not abandon him.

Lin Geng felt like throwing up from all the running. He supported himself with the help from a dead tree while gasping for air, completely oblivious of the bark cutting into his fingers. A stifling heat surrounded him, he seemed to have become a roasted pig. He stuttered out: “How… how much… longer…”

Luo You said indifferently: “We have only crossed five kilometers, there are still fifteen kilometers to go.”

“No… no way… I can’t run anymore… can’t we take a break…” If the ground busking in the sun were not as hot as a scalding frying pan, then Lin Geng would be eager to lie down on it. Currently, his mouth was dry and his lips were cracked. Fire seemed to be sprouting in between his roars, as an indescribable heat spread through every nook and cranny of his body. He felt like his body was about to vaporize.

Luo You said in a low voice: “The sun is going down. If we don’t reach the survivor base by today, then without even mentioning the many risks in the night, just us wasting the entire night is very detrimental to the team battle.”

Arnold asked in puzzlement: “Even if we reach the base, we’re still gonna sleep at night, so why do you say that it’s a waste of time?”

“Because the survivors don’t know us.” Luo You pointed out the crucial point: “The other side has five Evolvers. Obviously our team is weaker than the other side, yet it was still assigned to this group battle, proving that the mission assigned by the Cube has circumstances beneficial to us.”

Arnold contemplated for a moment, before suddenly slapping his thigh and saying: “I see. They are on the offensive while we are on the defensive. Therefore, in this team battle, our side’s power is not limited to that of our group and instead, covers our group of seven plus everyone in the survivor base as well as the base’s defensive facilities!”

Luo You nodded his head and said: “That’s right. According to the Cube’s appraisal, the gap in strength between the two parties shouldn’t be too great. Therefore, if we want to win this fight, it’s vital that we gain the trust of the people in the survivor base in order to respond to the offensive alongside them. This is our only hope at gaining victory.”

Arnold’s expression sank: “But it takes time to gain trust. The survivors don’t know about our mission, and trust between people was lost long ago in this wasteland. Therefore, our greatest challenge at present lies in getting their trust.”

“Yes, the Cube wouldn’t give us a mission with too favorable conditions, there are bound to be difficulties. Getting the trust of the survivors, therein lies the difficulty.” Luo You looked into the distance, and said: “The enemy’s team should be hundreds of kilometers away from the survivor base. Therefore, their challenge lies in the mutants and the harsh environment along the hundreds of kilometers of their journey. The longer they take to arrive, the more time we will have to acquire the survivor’s trust and the more advantageous it will be for us. On the other had, the longer we take to go there, the more advantageous it is for them. Therefore, the first contest, race against time, has already begun.”

“The first contest, race against time, has already begun.” Inside a M2 Bradley, while sitting in a passenger seat, Yang Feng gave Irene and Gao Yuan an analysis of the situation.

Although the five people in this squad were all Evolves, but Yang Feng, Irene, and Gao Yuan were the main combat strength. The other two had participated in less missions and had gotten comparably fewer evolution points. Therefore, these two usually fought by piloting the M2 Bradleys.

Currently, a team member was driving the vehicle, and Irene and Gao Yuan, who itched to bang it out, were entangled in a passionate bout in the back seat. Gao Yuan’s heavy growls and Irene’s enticing shrieks mixed together along with the the sounds of bodies colliding.

Gao Yuan was fierce. While banging, he still talked to Yang Feng: “Our two M2s are different from those during the old era. The ones redeemed from the Cube are of an exceedingly advanced technology. It has unlimited fuel, unlimited ammunition, reinforced hybrid armor, reinforced bogie wheels, and a motor installed with an special cooler. While traveling day and night, we’ll arrive in about two days… ah… grip it tighter, tighter, great! …”

Irene giggled as she twisted her ass and played with Gao Yuan: “We have a great advantage in terms of time. In the wilderness, is there still any trust between people? The other party can’t possibly gain the trust of the survivors. When the time comes, we’ll be facing a mob lacking cohesion. Just the fire power from the two M2s will be sufficient to tear them to shreds!”

Yang Feng sneered: “It’s a bad habit to underestimate your enemy. It’s true that it’s rather difficult to establish trust nowadays, but if we’re just talking about fighting alongside others, then there are many ways around it – money, debts, coercion, persuasion, all those can do the trick.”

Gao Yuan gasped coarsely, asking: “Captain, what do you want to say?”

Suddenly, Yang Feng began to grow silver-white fur, his powerful limbs began to bulge rapidly, turning abnormally thick and robust, his fingernails became as sharp as blades, and his facial features began to rapidly twist into those of a beast, as ominous glints flickered on the terrifying fangs. He spoke in a twisted, low growl: “Keep the speed. I’ll go ahead to do a raid.”

Gao Yuan and Irene became alert at once and even stopped their movements: “There are still hundreds of kilometers to go, you want to cross this distance by running? It’s too exhausting!”

“You know nothing about my current strength!” Yang Feng opened the door, issued a fierce wolf’s howl, and then started running on all fours. In the blink of an eye, he surpassed the two Bradleys driving at full speed, leaving a trail of dust in his wake and even smashing a few zombies swaying about. With a hard to imagine speed, he rushed towards his destination.
