Chapter 206 - Battling Vermilion Bird

Edited by RED

Xu Qi noticed that the Ice-Armored Horned Dragon’s hands were actually trembling as he wielded his spear, and cursed inwardly.

On the Vermilion Bird’s side, she held the Scarlet Firmament Sword in her hand, raising it above her head. At the same time, a huge illusory figure appeared above her. The figure looked quite savage, and wielded a gigantic red sword in his hand. Upon taking a closer look, Xu Qi found that the sword looked exactly the same as the Scarlet Firmament Sword in the Vermilion Bird’s hand. Even their actions were synchronized, and they seemed to be slashing down at the same moment.

“Not good!” Xu Qi cried out at the sight of this. He understood that the Vermilion Bird might use a truly devastating technique. He thought for a moment and charged through the rainbow seal, striking out with three palms at the Vermilion Bird.

She let out a cold humph at the sight of this, seemingly without any intention of defending against him. In the end, the three palm strikes landed cleanly on her body. However, she looked to be unaffected by them!

“Sword Soul of Scarlet Firmament - Soul Annihilation!” Vermilion Bird yelled out as the Scarlet Firmament Sword in her hand slashed downward. The huge counterpart above her head turned into a sword of scarlet flames as well, and fell down silently. Xu Qi was looking at the huge sword. He could sense the overwhelming might contained in it, and rainbow energy erupted from his body. His speed exploded, flashing over in front of the Ice-Armored Horned Dragon.

Immediately after, the sword crashed down, and dust clouds were raised everywhere. The entire Vermilion Bird Cavern seemed to rock for a moment.

After executing this technique, the Vermilion Bird’s sword-wielding hand fell down weakly, and her breathing turned heavy. Her complexion paled, too. It was obvious that using this technique wore her out.

Even so, when the dust settled, the Vermilion Bird didn’t see the scene where the Ice-Armored Horned Dragon and Xu Qi were collapsed on the ground. Instead, what she saw was two figures standing in front of her, enveloped in golden flames, leaving her astonished.

“How could this be!? How was it possible for you to fend off my Sword Soul of Scarlet Firmament with your pathetic cultivation?! Impossible!” Vermilion Bird screamed, shaking her head, seemingly unable to accept what she saw as true.

“Vermilion Bird, I might not know the reason for you acting so stubborn, but I won’t stand by and watch if you wish to hurt the Ice-Armored Horned Dragon. I respect that you are one of the famed Divine Beasts, and don’t wish to force you into doing anything. But please, don’t force my hand!” Xu Qi shouted as he slowly retracted the golden flames around him, his hands behind his back.

However, the Ice-Armored Horned Dragon realized that Xu Qi’s hidden hands were trembling uncontrollably. Obviously, taking on that devastating technique of the Vermilion Bird wasn’t as easy as he showed.

In his opinion, he felt that he had a good grasp of the Vermilion Bird’s strength, since he had battled against her countless times since he was thrown into this cavern by Venerable Ziyan. Although he felt that he wouldn’t have died if he was struck with that move earlier, he would definitely have been gravely injured.

“What’s your name?” the Vermilion Bird suddenly asked evenly, looking at Xu Qi.

“Xu Qi.”

“Xu Qi? Let me ask you; was Black Tortoise really subdued by you?”

“Absolutely.”

The Vermilion Bird fell silent after getting her answer, thinking of something. Meanwhile, Xu Qi was trying his best to recover his energy. Taking that move head-on consumed too much energy. Originally, he felt that he wouldn’t be able to fully defend against it, but the seemingly incomparably powerful slash weakened by a large margin as it fell, so much that Xu Qi thought it was the Vermilion Bird who held back. However, it didn’t seem like it, judging by her reaction.

Unbeknownst to them, the Vermilion Bird and Ice-Armored Horned Dragon’s profound cultivation had been declining after being sealed in the Vermilion Bird Cavern. Their current strength was only a shadow of their former selves.

“I didn’t expect my cultivation to actually decline to such a state, that I can’t even do anything to someone I deem as an ant. Haha, Venerable Ziyan, what impressive methods you have!” the Vermilion Bird suddenly looked up to the sky and laughed.

“As the esteemed Vermilion Bird, perhaps in Deity Ling Guang’s eyes, humans are but ants to you. But please don’t forget that if you wish to leave this place and regain your freedom, you will require the help of such an ant to do so. Originally, I didn’t wish to use force on you, but your fiery temper has truly angered me!” Xu Qi shouted with a stern expression.

“What, are you challenging me?” Vermilion Bird asked in contempt, slightly raising her eyebrow.

“Wrong! I’m not challenging you!” Xu Qi denied.

“At least you know your own place. My cultivation might not be as powerful as before, but you’ll only be seeking your own death by challenging me!” Vermilion Bird continued.

“Haha, Vermilion Bird! I’m not challenging you, but I’m going to subdue you today!” Xu Qi chortled. An imposing air spread outwards, shocking even the Ice-Armored Horned Dragon standing behind him.

“With just you?” the Vermilion Bird rebutted, still holding Xu Qi in contempt. She could tell that the rainbow energy on Xu Qi was from the same type as that used by Venerable Ziyan. However, the power they held were as different as heaven and earth. Obviously, Venerable Ziyan was the heaven, while Xu Qi was the earth. They couldn’t be mentioned on equal terms.

Before Xu Qi could put a word in, the Ice-Armored Horned Dragon spoke out, “Say, don’t be reckless. This gaudy bird might not be as strong as before, but you are still no match for her with the cultivation you possess. It’s better for you to think of a way to leave first.”

Hearing this, Xu Qi turned around and took a glance at the Ice-Armored Horned Dragon, then raised his head to look at the top of the cavern. Xu Qi didn’t give any response to him, but the Ice-Armored Horned Dragon could tell that Xu Qi didn’t put his words to heart.

Xu Qi turned back towards the Vermilion Bird and flipped his palm. The Heavens Vanquisher sword, which had never been unsheathed since he obtained it, appeared in his hand.

“The Heavens Vanquisher!”

“The Heavens Vanquisher!”

Both Vermilion Bird and the Ice-Armored Horned Dragon cried out in unison at the sight of the sword in Xu Qi’s hand. Astonishment was all that could be discerned in their voices, they were obviously shocked at its appearance.

“Today, I shall use this Heavens Vanquisher sword to fight it out with you!” Xu Qi said plainly, gently caressing the sword.

The Vermilion Bird soon recovered from her shock and retorted, “Hmph, you’re too arrogant, Xu Qi. Do you take me for a fool? I’m afraid you can’t even unsheathe it!”

“You’re right. I am indeed unable to draw it out with my current cultivation. But who said that I was going to do so?! I don’t need the Heavens Vanquisher to be unsheathed to deal with you!” Xu Qi said overbearingly, pointing the sheathed Heavens Vanquisher at the Vermilion Bird.

She couldn’t help but feel puzzled at seeing this. When she first saw Xu Qi, she could tell that he was obviously fearful of her. Why would he become so arrogant after withstanding my attack? Could it be that strike has caused some damage to his brain?

Vermilion Bird raised her Scarlet Firmament Sword and said coldly, “You arrogant fellow! You must be thinking of taking action because you saw that I was weakened! If you think you’ll be able to handle me with just the sheathed Heavens Vanquisher, then all I can tell you is that you couldn’t be any more wrong!”

“Enough of your nonsense. Fight me! Show me whether the might of the Vermilion Bird is as powerful as the legends!” Xu Qi said tyrannically. Not a trace of fear could be seen in his eyes, his bravado seemingly not an act.

Following which, Xu Qi turned to the Ice-Armored Horned Dragon and said, “Back off to the side for now. It’s better if you go further away, or I may hurt you.”

The Ice-Armored Horned Dragon nodded mechanically and slowly retreated as he kept wondering, What powerful technique is Xu Qi going to use, that he would even ask me to back off?

Seeing the Ice-Armored Horned Dragon was backing off, the Vermilion Bird let out a cold hmph and said, “I thought you two were going to gang up against me. Perhaps you will survive if you did so. Who would’ve thought you are actually arrogant to such an extent! Today, I will have you pay the price for your arrogance! You will never have the chance to escape again!”

Right when her voice rang out, her figure zipped over to the rainbow seal, waving the Scarlet Firmament Sword. She quickly formed a wall of scarlet flames in front of the rainbow seal. On the wall of flames, there were actually several fire birds that looked like the Vermilion Bird swimming around.

After doing all this, she looked at Xu Qi, feeling pleased with herself. The unique wall of scarlet flames she set up was a type of unique seal. Even someone as powerful as the Ice-Armored Horned Dragon would be unable to break it.

However, Xu Qi’s expression remain unchanged at seeing this. He looked at the Vermilion Bird thoughtfully, seemingly disregarding the scarlet flame seal she laid down.

“How arrogant!” the Vermilion Bird hmphed coldly. She no longer spoke another word, and raised her Scarlet Firmament Sword, attacking Xu Qi. Her figure turned into a blur, her speed so fast that it left one speechless.

On the other hand, Xu Qi slowly raised the Heavens Vanquisher sword and tossed it gently into the air as the Vermilion Bird drew closer, closing his eyes.

“Are you surrendering and begging for mercy now? Too Late!” the Vermilion Bird’s voice rang out. Just as her voice trailed off, Xu Qi suddenly snapped his eyes open, the Five Elements Wings spread on his back. His body suddenly rose, flying straight at the Heavens Vanquisher in the air.

The Vermilion Bird wasn’t slow to react to this, either, and immediately changed her direction, chasing after him.

Xu Qi caught the Heavens Vanquisher in midair without stopping, as he continued flying upwards. Right before the Vermilion Bird caught up to him, he suddenly stopped in place, looking at her with a subtle smile.

The Vermilion Bird violently thrust the Scarlet Firmament Sword at Xu Qi. When the sword was about to penetrate him, she suddenly felt herself slamming into an unknown object. A blinding streak of rainbow light shone in front of her, and what followed were several bolts of lightning striking her body.

“Ah!” the Vermilion Bird screamed out in pain, and her body crashed heavily onto the ground, her Scarlet Firmament Sword falling from her hand to the side.
