Draylen followed the old man through the complex cave system. He listened as the old man lectured him on different aspects on 'Dragon Summoning'. The reason why it was called this was because it was originally the way dragons cast magic. The very first water dragon was actually a fire dragon which had embedded a Gills spell circle over it's lungs and it's descendants had evolved over time.

"You must be wondering how such a colossal creature could inscribe such a delicate spell circle on itself? Simple. They are beings with vast reserves of mana and are able to use freely use it to manipulate objects." The old man said knowledgeably.

"But what about us humans? How do we inscribe spell circles on our backs?" Draylen asked.

"Well, us Dragon Summoners obviously have dragons as familiars. You know that a summoner's magic pool is shared with his familiar, thus after you have tamed a dragon you will have a mana pool large enough for you to inscribe spell circles on your back."

"Ahh, the problem is, how long will it be until I have a dragon of my own?" Draylen mourned exaggeratedly.

The old man looked at him in surprise.

"You already have one."

"What?"

"When I rescued you, you were clutching a black scroll. That scroll contains a dragon." The old man said.

"I don't really remember and also, how do you know that it contains a dragon in the first place?"

"Dragons are able to sense each other and also creatures with a draconic bloodline. My dragon sensed it's kin within that scroll."

"Oh." Draylen replied, unable to make sense of the events unfolding.

"Since you didn't know about the scroll, how about you go and summon it now?" The old man advised.

"Yes, of course!" Draylen shouted excitedly.

The two hastened their pace and very soon returned to the hammock area. They retrieved the black scroll which lay in the hammock and then made their way to the summoning room. It was a room bigger than the main cave chamber itself, there was a large floating platform in the middle with a dark green altar.

The old man walked over to a smaller floating platform on the side, beckoned Draylen to follow and then activated the spell circle in the middle of the platform. It slowly floated toward the larger platform in the centre of the summoning room.

"Right. I have already prepared large amounts of gold and livestock. I will also summon my dragon Karonar in case you summon a potentially dangerous adult dragon. If that is the case, you must get behind me and I will subdue it for you." The old man said, whilst pulling several items from his stomach.

"Right." Draylen nodded.

A white light lit up the already bright room and the chamber rumbled as a massive white armoured dragon appeared.

'How did that even fit?!' Draylen thought.

The dragon, Karonar, lazily looked at the small boy in front and nodded slowly, causing the ground to shake slightly.

"Best of luck, young one."

Although all Karonar did was growl, the meaning of it's voice was transmitted through into Draylen's mind, making it possible for them to communicate.

"T-thanks." Draylen nodded back politely and then made his way through piles of gold towards the altar.

He unraveled the black scroll, spreading it across the top of the altar. Then, he picked up the ceremonial dagger that lay on the side of the altar and cut his index finger, allowing blood to fall into the centre of the summoning circle. The mana that was infused into the blood triggered the circle and black lines lit up on the scroll.

-Vvvvrrrmmm

The entire cave system felt like it was shaking. Dust and small bits of rock fell from the ceiling, making vision and breathing difficult.

"This is bad!" The old man shouted, "Young Draylen, to me!"

Karonar took a defensive stance, shielding the two with his plated wings.

"This kind of shaking didn't even happen when I summoned Karonar, young boy, what you have just summoned is going to be difficult to subdue."

"What, why?" Draylen asked pointlessly.

"Dragons are arrogant and prideful. Although you have summoned it through a blood pact spell circle, there is no guarantee it will not attempt to kill you to free itself!" The old man said seriously.

Draylen gulped in response.

'I have the old man and Karonar protecting me, whatever I've summoned definitely won't be stronger than them combined.'

The shaking abruptly died down and the curtain of dust slowly settled. There was an ominous silence as Draylen and the old man held their breaths.

-Graowwrr!

A high pitched growl sounded out, along with the 'pa pa' of footsteps. A small black creature emerged from the dust, it's big draconic eyes looking around curiously. Upon seeing Draylen hiding behind Karonar's wings, it let out a yelp of joy and loped over like a drunken puppy.

There was only one thing going through everyone's minds.

What.

Karonar snorted and withdrew his wings.

"Horatio, you call me for such small matters."

"Shut up lizard, you were scared too." The old man responded, annoyed.

Karonar snorted once more before turning into a bright light and entering the old man's chest.

Draylen was not paying attention to the two's banter. He slowly approached the small black dragon baby with his hands in front.

"Hello." He said gently as he approached.

-Kyaaa

The dragon yawned before hopping to it's feet and continued it's lopsided journey into Draylen's arms. It was warm yet the scales on the outside were cold. Upon touching his dragon baby, Draylen felt something in his heart melt.

"Little baby, do you want a name?" He asked tenderly.

The baby dragon did not understand what it's master was saying, but stuck out it's big tongue and grinned.

"Alright. Since you have these nice smoky black scales, I'll call you Charcoal. How's that sound-"

He was interrupted with a slimy lick to the face.

-Grarr

The baby dragon Charcoal squirmed slightly in Draylen's arms before instantly dozing off to sleep. The old man Horatio walked over and nodded.

"Hmmn. Although I'm not sure why such an infant caused all that shaking, that bond you've just created is very strong. I've not seen anything like it in several years. Well, you are destined to become a powerful Dragon Summoner, that's for sure." The old man praised.

'Haha, my talent picking is truly magnificent, I knew that he was destined to be my disciple at first sight!' The old man thought jovially.

'Shut up old man, you used magic.' Karonar interrupted.

The old man snorted in response, face wrinkling distastefully. He then turned to Draylen.

"Well, that's the first step, young Draylen, now hurry and fetch that black scroll, we need to inscribe you Charcoal's summoning circle."
