The room was silent before a frail trembling hand at the very back raised. It was such a small hand that Nolan had almost missed it. The woman came forward leaning heavily on a walker. Nolan interviewed her quickly and realized that the more able bodied had probably ignored her all morning. It would be easy to pass over someone with such a soft voice and frail body. The woman was patient with Nolan as he filled out her patient summary on the aged computer.

"Its so good to have some order around here you know. I mighty appreciate what you're doing around here. I know all the receptionists are too frightened of the non-English speaking patients to come here. They deliberately take their days off so they don't have to come here." The woman looked at Nolan with admiration.

"It is actually an accident that I'm here today." Nolan admitted.

"Well it's an accident you should make sure that happens more often. We could really use you here. Small folks like me need a big man to protect us."

Nolan tried to say something nice in return. The woman then quickly listed off the order in which everyone had come before taking a vacant seat close to the door. Nolan continued to call up patients and quickly sent the patient information with a satisfied grin to the system administrator.  He was glad he had learned medical coding when he was in high school. It was strange how his old hobbies turned out to be useful when he least expected it. Find authorized novels in Webnovel, faster updates, better experience,Please click www.webnovel.com for visiting.

He had brought out some papers to grade when the door to the office opened. An obese man with a motorized wheelchair emerged. There was a rancid smell as Nolan could see an infected scar had new dressing. The patient seemed relieved even as patients who were waiting looked at him with disgust. The door was about to close on his back wheels but a warm voice shot out as she held the door. "I got you Mr Linderman. I'm really happy that we are making progress. I hope the referral with help get that infection sorted out. Alright now." She looked at the orderly room and froze. Everyone was quietly sitting in chairs. The children were minded and behaving. She raised her voice slightly. "Can the next patient come to be weighed?"

"That would be myself, Dr Wu." The woman and her walker came slowly but Dr Wu kept the door open. She got through and a nurse caught her with a professional smile as she was led into an empty examination room.

Wu stepped through the door and craned her neck to look around curiously. She yelled back, "Pam, I think we can open up exam rooms 4 and 6. There is enough supervision with the two of us."

She turned to go back and caught Nolan sitting at the reception desk. Her mouth set into an unreadable expression. Her tired face finally melted into a smile as she slapped his shoulder with good natured enthusiasm. "Nolan, I am so sorry for today. It's a busy day, but I am glad that you decided to stick around and pitch in." Her eyes were like melted chocolate with the relief that was echoed in her words. She really had been swamped all morning.
