Strange, Empty Package

The sun was very strong in the north, not at all rare like it was in Sichun. I delivered about half of my packages by noon, and with the scorching sun over my head, I decided to take a lunch break. I stopped in at a restaurant and ate before heading back out to finish my work.

Soon enough, I was doing my last deliveries in the Changcheng neighborhood. I let out a sigh when I saw that I only had six or seven packages left. I was about to call the owners of the packages when I noticed the ‘farming package’ from that morning. Upon closer inspection, there was no other contact information for the sender. But the recipient’s name and address had me raising a brow.

In the past year or so, in my time as a delivery man, I’d met all sorts of people. Some treated me very well. And if we became friendly, they would sometimes offer me water or fruit when we met. Of course, these people were rare. Most people looked down on delivery people.

Perhaps this is affirms that old saying. ‘Work hard when you’re young or deliver packages when all’s said and done.’

It just so happened that this empty package was for a rather troublesome customer.

She’s a 30-something woman named Yang Xiaoxia, fat and ugly as ugly could be. I remember the first time I made a delivery to her, I politely called to notify her, and she started yelling at me.

“Are you saying that your company makes its customers go to retrieve their packages?! Then what are you delivery people supposed to do to earn a living?! Get my package here in one minute or I’m going to file a complaint!”

What are these people so fucking angry about? Why can’t we just talk things through nicely? If you can’t come down to get your package, and I have to bring it up, then so be it. But this woman treated me like I owed her money or something. I ground my teeth at her words. When I met people like this, I sometimes wanted to quit. I get 1 yuan for each delivery, and I have to deal with your damn attitude too.

But even though I was angry, I didn’t dare talk back to the customer. If I got a complaint, I basically worked two days for naught.

I sighed and then delivered my other packages first. I decided that calling Yang Xiaoxia would be a waste of everyone’s time, so I’d just deliver the package directly to her door.

Yang Xiaoxia lived on the sixth floor. When I got to her door, I knocked gently on the door.

After a few seconds, an impatient female voice came.

“Who is it? Why are you knocking at this time of day?”

I was bewildered. It was barely 2pm. Why can’t someone knock on your door?

A short while later, I heard footsteps from inside. The door opened and I was greeted by the rotund Yang Xiaoxia, dressed in a very flashy flower-print skirt. However, her shirt was a bit messy and when I looked down, I saw that she wore a pair of men’s leather shoes.

I figured that she must have been getting down to business with someone inside. No wonder it took so long to open the door.

“Hello, this is your delivery. Please sign here.”

I handed the delivery notice and a pen over to Yang Xiaoxia and then turned to the side, having zero desire to look at this person longer than I had do.

Well, who’d have expected that when she saw me, she would shout, “Is this how you deliver packages?! Don’t you know to notify the people you’re delivering to?! Don’t you know it’s rude to just knock on people’s doors?!”

When I heard that, I got angry. I suppressed my rage as I asked, “Last time, when I called you, didn’t you tell me to deliver it to your door?”

“You dare talk back?! Which company are you from?! I’m going to file a complaint! A delivery man with poor upbringing like you needs to have a few complaints to learn their lesson!”

There was a buzzing in my head and my hands started to tremble. I nearly let myself beat up this woman right then and there.

“I really don’t know who lacks fucking manners here! Take the package, don’t take it! Whatever! Make your complaint if you want! I’ve had enough of you, you fat old pig!”

Yang Xiaoxia must not have expected my response as she looked quite surprised. I ripped off the delivery notice and tossed her package inside her apartment. As I walked away, I shouted back to her, “Fat old pig, the next time you get a package, I’m not going to deliver it! I’m going to drop it in the lobby, and you can take it if you want! We’ll see who cares to deliver your packages again!”

I headed down to the fifth floor, and I could still hear Yang Xiaoxia’s curses from above. I could also faintly hear a man trying to stop her.

After finishing my deliveries that day, I returned to the branch store. I turned in my delivery receipts, and got ready to head home. Although I’d be losing a few hundred yuan from the complaint, I felt quite happy inside. When someone doesn’t treat others like people, it’s only natural that others wouldn’t treat them like a person either. I’m sure I’m not the only person to have felt her ire.

When I got home, I was in a great mood. I played a few rounds, and was about to hit Gold, when a knock came on my door.

I hurried over to get the door, only to discover two uniformed officers standing outside.

Police at my door? That was a first for me. Curious, I asked, “Excuse me, who are you looking for?”

One of the officers smiled and kindly asked, “Are you Ji Wen?”

“I am. But, Officer, why are you looking for me?”

“This afternoon, at 3pm, a husband and wife in the Changcheng neighborhood jumped off a building to their death. It was reported that you made a delivery to their house just before that and got into a disagreement with them. We just came to learn more about the situation.”
