Chapter 1: The Earthquake

In the bustling city, the crowd comes and goes, not stopping in their rush. Some are hurrying to work, some are hurrying to a date, and others leisurely stroll. In one of the factories in the city, there is a group of workers watching the news on TV, their faces both nervous and scared.

“Good afternoon[1] everyone, we are now broadcasting some emergency news. Early this morning, a magnitude 15 earthquake occurred in District C, causing a huge crisis. According to current information, more than 4,000 people have died and more than 60,000 are injured. Now we’re going to show footage from District C.”

The camera on TV turned around, showing the current situation in District C. The high-rise buildings had all crumbled, bodies lay sprawled out among the ruins. People are crying endlessly, it’s a picture full of misery and despair causing people’s hearts to tremble as if they are in a hell on earth.

This is already the eighth earthquake this month. Numerous countries have been devastated by earthquakes. Countless people lost their short and small lives in the earthquakes. Rescue teams are dispatched and security measures are constantly being reinforced, but they can’t stop nature’s disasters. It’s suspected that this is a precursor for the end of the world.

The people watching the TV aren’t listening to the broadcast, they’re already voicing their opinions. There is also another type of person; a worker who constantly operated the machine in front of him. He thought that the earthquake and the disaster was none of his business. He only had a single thought — to make money, to continuously make money. He cannot stop making money because he has too much debt and has to pay it off as quickly as possible.

However, just when he’d placed the raw materials into the machine, his heart was suddenly startled and his fingers shook a little. Just now, he’d felt a vibration from the machine. Although it was only a moment, it was obviously different from when the machine was normally working.

The shocked teenager didn’t move, quietly looking at his machine; he wanted to first see if it was his own illusion.

After around 5 minutes, everything was normal and the young man’s heart slowly calmed; he returned to working diligently.

“Han Lin, why are you still working? It’s lunchtime, you should eat.” An uncle shouted at the teenager while distributing a bag of lunch boxes to the people in front of the TV.

“Oh, roger that.”

The young man stopped his work, turned off the machine, washed his hands, and slowly walked towards the crowd.

(Han Lin is 23 years old and a high school graduate. Just after leaving school, he started a small business with great ambitions. Unfortunately, school and reality are different. He was inexperienced, within a year the company went bankrupt and even owed a debt of ******. His degree isn’t enough, he can only helplessly work in the factory to pay his debt. In today’s society, there are many people in the same situation. Many young people are naive and think that big bosses earn big money, but they don’t know the cruelty of society. Most of them are tragically eliminated after only just starting their business.)

Time flies very quickly. People are busy with their work and quickly forget the fear brought by the news.

“Ling ling ling…” The bell finally rang, announcing the end of the work day.

Han Lin dragged his exhausted body back to his rented room. The moment he got home he laid on his bed. He didn’t want to move at all, he was too tired.

Han Lin slept for about half an hour before he woke up. He tiredly opened the fridge and took out his leftovers from the night before; looked, en, still can eat. He fried it then ate it all in three bites.

Han Lin squatted, “Another meal solved.”

He looked into the night sky revealing the stars. Tonight it’s truly stunning. A group of crescent bends hangs in the air, as if the sky is smiling The sky is full of stars flashing like fireflies. It is a beautiful world.

Gazing at the night sky, Han Lin thought of his high school memories. They flashed like scenes from a movie in Han Lin’s mind; everything was so kind, so innocent; looking at what he was like then, he helplessly sighed. Remembering his elderly parents, his heart was filled with bitterness.

He didn’t know how much time passed before Han Lin went back to bed and fell asleep again. This time, he slept very well; the hard work rushed through his thin body so that he didn’t even move.

At around 3:00 AM, the bed violently shook, waking Han Lin up. His nerves were tight, what was happening!?

“Pa!” The clock on the wall fell down. Han Le exclaimed again, he immediately knew what had happened and quickly ran away. Right after Han Lin left the house, it completely collapsed behind him.
