"You're lucky we got there in time." Ackura said.

"Well, I owe you one, when we get back I can treat you to a meal." Manfred grinned.

"That's essentially a date." She replied, straight faced.

"I'll take that as a yes then."

She shook her head before returning to her own battalion. There were 2 battalions in a regiment and two joint commanders, Manfred and Ackura. They had arrived at the entrance to the valley and finished building their temporary HQ. They knew that Black Scythe had taken the frontier city Castle. He had lost a quarter of his men during the monster attack, leaving him with roughly 750 soldiers.

When he had activated Warrior's Challenge on the War Troll, he had prepared to die but the 'Cleavers' had arrived, set the monster ablaze and ended the fight using only a couple of Ether crystals. The 1st battalion had arrived and then patched their soldiers up before they marched on together.

They were currently preparing their siege machines, getting ready to attack. They had 10 battering rams, over a hundred ladders and catapults. Their main advantage was highly trained Arial Sages, mainly the 'Cleavers' but other sections had participated as well. They had 3 Spirit Sage sections, while it wasn't much each of them had a lot of individual power, stronger than 50 men each.

The men were lined up, an advance group, the main body and support troops. 200-1200-350.

Each man was equipped with chainmail armour, except from the knights who had full plate armour. They had kite shields whilst the front rank held tower shields. The Arial Sages would take to the skies and fire volleys at the enemy troops, both arrows and magic.

Manfred would take to the front lines, since he was never much of a strategist whilst Ackura would stay at HQ and provide support.

"Advance unit, Forward march!" He yelled.

They obeyed, the footsteps of the soldiers shook the valley, causing dust to shoot up from the ground. They were obviously to test the waters as they knew that the terrain was perfect for traps. Now all they needed to do was wait for the soldiers to send a messenger of the enemy's formation.

...

Illian's gauntlets had been fitted by the Black Scythe's blacksmith, Old Smoke, with runes like the one in his Magic Pistol. The Magic Pistol's rune absorbed Ether directly from the crystals, firing quickly whereas the runes in his gauntlets had been modified to gather Ether from all around. Orucos paid, of course.

What he really wanted to do now was infuse Archangel Beam and Dark Flame into the gauntlets so that he could fire the destructive spells with ease. That would have to wait though. He had been tasked with capturing the strategic commander of the enemy side and bringing them back alive.

"Enemy's approaching!" A look out cried.

"Estimated number: 200! It's an advance group!"

The enemy had appeared several thousands of meters away. They weren't in the range of the traps yet.

There was an unnerving silence as all of the Black Scythes waited in anticipation. Suddenly, a group of men fell into a pitfall. Their screams could be heard from all around. The advance group slowed down, not knowing whether they would fall into traps either, thus checking thoroughly for traps. There was a 'safe zone' within a 500 meters in front of Castle since their own troops would need ground to stand on as well.

The enemy came closer and closer, only occasionally losing a few men to the pitfalls and magic mines. More screams rang out and the explosions rang through the valley.

"Take aim!" The general of the 1st wall shouted.

Ballista and bows were pointed towards the mass of advancing enemies. There was a creaking sound as the bows and ballista's strings were pulled back in unison.

"Fire!"

A loud humming filled the air as the moon was blocked out with flying black specks. A man in the advance group shouted something and they raised their shields towards the sky. The arrows poured down on them like rain, some hit the shields whilst others littered the ground. The heavy ballista bolts skewered through lines of soldiers, turning them all into bloody kebabs.

Suddenly, a magic mine went off as it was hit by a stray arrow, sending several men flying and to their deaths as their shields were no longer there to protect them. The rain of arrows and bolts continued but the enemy still marched on, struggling desperately.

Magic mines would constantly go off and end the lives of several soldiers instantly whilst others fell directly into pitfalls, getting impaled on long metal spikes. It wasn't long before half of the enemy were felled. They hadn't even gotten as far as the safe zone and were already pretty much dead.

Illian was not shocked by the bloodshed. Although he had witnessed some bloody things before, that was not the reason why. He had to escape from Black Scythe and that meant he had to work for them in order to gain a higher position and access to better training and materials. There were also many things that he could purchase here which could not be obtained legally in Lumitania.

In all honesty, he may have considered joining such groups but that would only be after he had fulfilled his promise with Jason and win the global Spirit Sage tournament. There were also many people whom he had been taken away from which he would have liked to stay with.

The reason why he did not just run away now was because of the fact that even if he did, he surely would be found and perhaps killed. He was just too weak the way he was now and the army of Genesis did not have many Spirit Sages employed. Black Scythe, a criminal group actually had stronger military power than a country.

"Illian." Orucos reminded.

"Yeah, i'll go now." He answered, running on all fours before camouflaging and activating the Shadow Walk ability he had stolen from the dark elf from before.
