The attending physician watched Ling Ran work with full focus. He wanted to find fault with Ling Ran’s maneuvers. He was not doing so with any malicious hidden intentions, even if he were to find a fault, he most probably would not talk about it. However, that would make him feel a little better. It was just like how an old lion who was chased out of its pack would not be able to hold back its laughter when seeing a dhole stealing a large chunk of meat from the new alpha male of the pack.

The attending physician watched as Ling Ran cut open the tissues under the skin. He cut open the superficial cervical fascia and the platysma. He then cut open the anterior cervical muscle. The attending physician did not see any problems with Ling Ran’s maneuvers. Ling Ran was extremely quick, and he only had to take a glance before deciding where to land the scalpel. But the attending physician believed that he could do the same… could he not?

Ling Ran used a small retractor to retract the incision from the side, and he naturally would not make any mistakes while doing this. The attending physician did not anticipate there to be any problem either.

However, Ling Ran only had to move his hands several times as he performed exposure and traction based on the median line, and the attending physician could not stand this at all.

‘There’s no need to do it so quickly.’ The attending physician lowered his head and muttered internally. This was basically his comment regarding Ling Ran’s maneuvers.

Ling Ran then performed traction again, cut off whatever was unnecessary, and he stitched up the incision.

As usual, his movements were quick and accurate.

The attending physician could not help but imitate Ling Ran’s movements with his hands. However, he maintained a calm expression.

Tracheostomy was only minor surgery, and as a doctor working in the ICU, he had performed a lot of it. When the situation called for it, he could also be this quick and accurate…

When the attending physician thought of this, he slowly raised his head.

‘There’s not much difference between my skills and Doctor Ling’s skills, anyway.’

The attending physician glanced at the nurses, and then at Ling Ran with this expression.

“I’ll leave the rest up to you.” When Ling Ran saw that the attending physician was standing beside him with nothing to do, he habitually asked the other party to wrap things up.Visit website our Listnovel.com

The ICU attending physician did not even think about the matter, and he uttered a reply out of habit, “Sure thing.”

He only froze for a moment after he said that.

This was what life in the hospital was like. Higher-ranked doctors would assign tasks to lower-ranking doctors, and those lower-ranked doctors might or might not be from their treatment groups.

And the attending physician working in the ICU obediently agreed to Ling Ran’s order because he subconsciously saw Ling Ran as a higher-ranked doctor.

He could not help but look around. From the nurses and Ling Ran to all the other doctors in the ICU, no one seemed to think that there was something wrong with that.

The attending physician could not help but flash a wan smile. He did not say much and quietly wrapped the tracheostomy up. He then attached a respirator to the tube and gave some orders regarding what drugs to use.

As usual, Ling Ran stepped aside without the intention to take away the attending physician’s authority.

The administration of drugs had to be done more meticulously in the ICU compared to the operating theater. If a person were to compare the administration of drugs in the ICU and the emergency room, there was a significant difference. For example, the transfusion of drugs via intravenous infusion or venous pump could be so minute that only less than 1 ounce of a certain drug was administered per hour.

Ling Ran only knew a little bit about drug administration, so he naturally had no choice but to make way for the attending physician.

Even though the attending physician felt like showing off, it was not like he could show off when it came to the administration of drugs. This was an internist’s only job, and even though it required a lot of attention to detail, internists made a lot of money and were not under much stress. They also did not have to bear as much responsibility and rarely had to be on night shifts. However, they looked far from cool as they did their job.

“That’s all for now. Check the blood gas level again later.” The attending physician was calm as he wrapped things up, and he gave an order after he was done. He then glanced at Ling Ran and said, “Doctor Ling, are you done making ward rounds?”

The attending physician was unable to show off, and he sensed that there was a possibility that Ling Ran might snatch his authority away from him. Hence, he could not help but be aversive of Ling Ran’s presence.

The feeling was especially strong when he saw that nurses would take the initiative to wipe Ling Ran’s forehead before he could even sweat. The attending physician was sweating so much that the sweat from his hair had penetrated his cap, but none of the nurses bothered to wipe it off for him.

Ling Ran was a clever person, and he could sense the other party’s aversion.

He was not good at social situations, but he was very familiar with the feeling.

When faced with such a situation, Ling Ran always handled it the same way.

He flashed a slight smile and decided to do his own thing. He replied, “Not yet.”

The attending physician’s lips parted a little, but he swallowed his words. ‘I merely asked the question to give you a hint to leave. I wasn’t really asking for an answer.’

The attending physician mocked Ling Ran internally and said, “Doctor Ling, as you can see, we’re very busy in the ICU—”

“Isn’t this normal in the ICU? The other day when the associate hospital director came to make ward rounds, this wasn’t how you treated him.” An experienced nurse was dissatisfied with the attending physician’s attitude, and she criticized him as she worked.

Out of all the departments in the hospitals, the nurses in the ICU were the fiercest.

Of course, doctors in the ICU were usually also fierce and impolite. This was because if they were to be polite, the ICU would not be able to sustain itself.

However, when a doctor who was of ordinary fierceness was pitted against the fiercest nurse in the ICU, it would at most result in a tie.

The attending physician furrowed his eyebrows a little. He turned and saw that the nurse who had reprimanded him earlier was reinserting a patient’s ureteral catheter. The ureteral catheter was thick, and the experienced nurse swung it a few times before inserting it forcefully into the patient’s ureter. She then pushed it inwards…

“Forget about it.” The attending physician pursed his lips. He did not bother saying anything else.

The experienced nurse chuckled. She had no intention of not letting the attending physician off the hook.

“Doctor Yan, the patient I mentioned in the afternoon is here,” a nurse informed the attending physician after receiving a call.

“I’ll go and take a look.” Attending Physician Yan took the opportunity to leave the ward.

Several fierce nurses immediately shifted their gaze to the two resident doctors working in the ICU.

The two resident doctors’ presence was not felt at all just now, but right now, they felt like luck was on their side all of a sudden, and they were treated with importance.

Ling Ran continued to stay silent as he made ward rounds.

He resuscitated the patients who were in danger and checked on patients when nothing was going on. He felt pretty at ease.

Soon, Attending Physician Yan came in with a patient. A family member was also there.

The ICU in Yun Hua Hospital had strict visiting hours, but they did not usually enforce it strictly.

A nurse noticed that Ling Ran was looking and walked over to explain things on behalf of Doctor Yan. “It’s the patient’s second time here. He used to be Doctor Yan’s patient, and he’s very cooperative. At the same time, he also has a strong desire to live. This is pretty hard to come by.”

 “Oh,” Ling Ran replied.

“Things are pretty sad for this couple. I heard that the wife is from quite an affluent family, and she is the daughter of a rich man. The husband is from a poor family, though. The wife’s family members did not agree to their marriage no matter what, and they eloped in the end… They finally managed to open a shop, but the husband ended up falling sick,” the nurse whispered. Now that she was gossiping about something emotional, she looked a lot less fierce.

It was only then that Ling Ran noticed that there was a rather graceful-looking woman standing behind the patient. She appeared to be in her early thirties, and she was fixing her gaze on the man in the hospital bed.

The man was wearing an oxygen mask and could no longer speak. His gaze was a little scattered, but he tried his best to look at his wife until the moment he lost consciousness.

“What illness is he suffering from?”

“Stomach cancer. Metastasis from the liver,” the nurse who knew what was going on said.

Ling Ran raised his head and said, “Look for his examination reports and scans.”
