Chapter 41: Missing Grandpa (1)

“Give me that thing you are holding.” Huo Suicheng reached his hand out to Huo Xiaoxiao.

Huo Xiaoxiao slowly raised her little criminal hands and placed the “little tadpole”, which she did not have enough time to throw out, in her father’s hands.

Huo Suicheng inspected the “little tadpole” in his hands and said, “You have learned to argue with me.”

“…No, Daddy. I was wrong. Listen to my explanation!”

Huo Xiaoxiao started to sob after realizing that she had said something wrong without knowing.

The motive was there, and the evidence of the crime was conclusive, both personal and physical. Now, it was tough to clear her name.

Yi Qian, standing right next to Huo Xiaoxiao, noticed that Huo Suicheng had misunderstood them. He felt anxious and hurriedly explained, “Uncle Huo, I’m really sorry. That… It was me who lit the fireworks! Xiaoxiao didn’t do anything! Don’t blame her!”

“Yeah! Yi Qian was the one who did it! Daddy, you have to believe me!”

Huo Suicheng inspected the ‘little tadpole’ in his hands once again and looked down at the two anxious children. “Do you both think I’m so easy to fool?”

Huo Xiaoxiao: “…”

Yi Qian: “…”

""

“In just a few days, you have learned how to blame others?”

Auntie Zhao came at the right time to help resolve the dispute, “Master, Xiaoxiao is still young. She likes to play, and she’s just a little bit naughty. Don’t be mad at her.”

“Auntie! It really wasn’t me who threw it!” Huo Xiaoxiao felt that she had been wronged by the heavens and was unjustly blamed by the world. Except for Yi Qian, no one believed her. She was wrongly accused.

In order to clear her name, Huo Xiaoxiao took out the remaining ‘little tadpoles’ from the fireworks gift box and stuffed them in Yi Qian’s hands.

“Yi Qian, light it up now!”

Yi Qian stared at her blankly.

“You go forward… stand here, and throw it over there!” Huo Xiaoxiao pointed to her father’s feet.

Yi Qian listened to her and threw it ahead.

Huo Xiaoxiao herself picked up another ‘little tadpole’ and raised her hand.

Three seconds, five seconds, ten seconds, thirty seconds.

One whole minute passed.

But that ‘little tadpole’ didn’t make any sound.

Huo Xiaoxiao originally wanted to repeat what had happened just now in front of her dad so that he could understand that the few ‘little tadpoles’ were truly thrown by Yi Qian. Just as she was going to throw it, her dad turned around. She didn’t even have the chance to throw it.

She didn’t expect that even God would oppose her.

The ‘little tadpole’ that didn’t blow up the first time suddenly let out a squeak. How come when she was alone, it didn’t react?

She was wrongly accused!

Anyway, only God believed her!

Huo Xiaociao was a little angry. She threw the ‘little tadpole’ in her hand towards Huo Suicheng’s feet.

Three seconds later.

“Pop—”

“…”

“…”

This was ridiculous!

Huo Xiaoxiao raised her head, and her eyes met with Huo Suicheng’s.

""

Now, even if she wasn’t the one to throw it, her dad still wouldn’t forgive her, right?

Huo Xiaoxiao’s whole person collapsed.

“Daddy, I am your only daughter. You have to believe me.”

Huo Suicheng dusted the fragments that had bounced off his body after the explosion and calmly said, “We’re going back. I’ll settle the accounts with you.”

This really felt wrong!

Although it was just a trivial matter, it felt terrible to be wronged!

It would be fine if she had done it, but the point was, how could she admit it if she didn’t do it!

She must have a clean break with her dad!

She angrily shouted at Huo Suicheng, “Daddy, it really wasn’t me! I am your daughter, your own biological child! How can you not trust me!”

Huo Suicheng squeezed her tiny face and said, “You are full of naughty little tricks.”

“This gentleman…” A slightly hesitant female voice sounded from the seat five meters away from them. “It really was not your daughter who threw the firework at you just now; it was that little boy.”

Huo Suicheng looked towards the sound’s direction.

Under the dim light, a family of three was seated. It was difficult to make out their features because of the insufficient light.

Huo Xiaoxiao’s eyes lit up at her words, as though she had finally caught a tiny ray of hope. “Look, Daddy, they saw it too. It’s really not me!” After speaking, she said loudly to the person next to her, “Auntie, you saw me just now, right?”

The voice of the auntie next to her sounded a little strange, “Saw… I saw it. You didn’t throw the tadpole.”

Huo Xiaoxiao looked back at her father with a proud face. “Daddy, did you hear that? I didn’t do it!”

Huo Suicheng gave the neighbor a deep look.

“Daddy! Do you hear me?”

Huo Suicheng bowed his head, picked Huo Xiaoxiao up, and left without saying a word.

Huo Xiaoxiao didn’t know what was wrong with her father. She laid in his arms and shouted behind her, “Auntie, thank you!”

When the childish voice sounded, the woman could not help but stand up as she followed the people’s backs.

“Wenxin, what’s wrong?”

Ji Wenxin shook her head and stood there sadly until Huo Suicheng couldn’t be seen anymore in the dim light.

“It’s nothing. I just thought the kid was so cute, but her father seemed a little…”

The little girl lying in the man’s arms became unhappy and pouted. “Mommy, am I not cute?”

Ji Wenxin smiled and touched Qianqian’s face. “Qianqian is also cute.”

“Then, Mommy should just praise Qianqian. Don’t praise other children.”

Ji Wenxin glanced at the man and smiled reluctantly. “Okay, I’ll only praise Qianqian.”

At the same time, in the corridor which led to the room, Huo Xiaoxiao was being held by Huo Suicheng. She thought that the “criminal case” was about to come to an end. With justice served, she felt proud and elated.

“Daddy, I said that I didn’t do it. The auntie next to me saw it all!”

Huo Suicheng’s face wasn’t looking too good, though. Seeing his gloomy expression, Huo Xiaoxiao didn’t dare to make any mischief. “I told you not to talk to strangers so casually, remember?”

“But… It was the auntie who testified for me just now. I had to thank her.”

“How do you know that she is a good person?”

Huo Xiaoxiao thought for a while. Her father’s expression had changed too fast, and she felt something was amiss.

Since her father wasn’t in a good mood right now, she would be better off not hitting the gun.

“Yes, Daddy, you are right. I won’t talk to strangers in the future.”

Yi Qian stumbled over behind them with his short legs as he kept yelling at Huo Suicheng, “Uncle Huo, it really wasn’t Xiaoxiao. I was the one who threw it!”

Although he had good intentions, the result was the exact opposite. Thinking that Huo Suicheng was going to beat Huo Xiaoxiao, he explained it all, “When we got the ‘little tadpoles’ just now, Huo Xiaoxiao taught me how to play, and after that, I threw them away!”

“…Yi Qian!” Huo Xiaoxiao laid on her dad’s shoulder, her eyes bursting with fire as she glared at Yi Qian.

What’s the matter with this kid! Is it in his nature to put me in trouble?

Once, twice, he kept revealing her inside story every time.

He’s a smart kid and doesn’t look bad, too, but why doesn’t he think with his brain before speaking!

Huo Xiaoxiao was furious!

Huo Suicheng’s deep voice sounded in her ear, “Huo Xiaoxiao!”

She sensed the threat in her father’s voice.

It was over; it was really over this time.

Huo Xiaoxiao guessed that her father was genuinely going to beat her up.

Leniency to those who confessed their crimes and inflexibility to those who refused to.

Huo Xiaoxiao sighed and slumped on her father’s shoulder. “I’m sorry, Daddy. I was wrong. I will not dare to do it the next time.”

Huo Suicheng asked in a deep threatening voice, “Now, not only are you naughty, but you also instigate others to follow you? Who taught you to shirk responsibility?”

Huo Xiaoxiao whispered, “I learned it from Daddy.”

“Huo. Xiao. Xiao!”

“Teacher said, it’s the parents’ fault for their child’s mistake.”

“Parents’ fault for their child’s mistake?” Huo Suicheng smiled. “Your teacher also taught you this? You are really clever to remember it well. So, you got your naughty tricks from Daddy? You learned how to shirk responsibility?”

When they reached the door of the hotel room, Aunt Zhao stepped forward and swiped her card to open the door.

“Young Master…”

Huo Suicheng entered the room and put Huo Xiaoxiao down.

“Aunt Zhao, stay out of this. You and Dad spoil her way too much at home.”

After hearing what he said, Aunt Zhao could not say anything else. She gave Huo Xiaoxiao a worried look before walking out.

“Uncle Huo, today’s matter…”

“Yi Qian, today’s matter has nothing to do with you. Uncle doesn’t blame you. You and Aunt Zhao should go back to the room and rest first.”

“But…”

“Go.”

Yi Qian was actually a little afraid of Uncle Huo. However, watching Huo Xiaoxiao standing there alone, he was worried that she would be scolded. Hence, he didn’t want to leave.

“Uncle needs to talk to Xiaoxiao; do you want to stay here?”

Yi Qian looked at Huo Xiaoxiao before saying, “Then, I will leave first.”

After speaking, he turned around and left reluctantly.

Only Huo Xiaoxiao and Huo Suicheng remained in the room.

Huo Suicheng sat on the sofa in the meantime and stared at Huo Xiaoxiao, who was standing in front of him with her head down. “Okay, let’s talk about your problem. You said that you learned it from me. Tell me, how did you pick it up from me?”

Huo Xiaoxiao didn’t say a word.

“Do you want Daddy to bring the feather duster to make you talk?”

“…” Huo Xiaoxiao thought about it seriously and said, “Daddy’s word doesn’t count.”

“How come my word doesn’t count?”

“Before, Daddy said you would come home for dinner, but Daddy didn’t. Besides, Daddy said you would pick me up from kindergarten every day, but Daddy never came.”

“…” Huo Suicheng was rendered speechless for a moment. “Daddy is busy with work and occasionally forgets about it.”

“Then, Daddy shouldn’t promise me. But you promised me and didn’t fulfill. So, Daddy’s word doesn’t count!” Huo Xiaoxiao looked a little aggrieved. “Daddy obviously agreed to it. Liar!”

She lowered her head and murmured, “I hope Daddy will come back every night, so I can have dinner with Daddy. I want to say goodnight to Daddy, but Daddy comes back so late and leaves again early in the morning… There is no time to see Daddy!”

Huo Suicheng frowned slightly.

“I know that Daddy is busy at work, but… but I like Daddy so much. I really want to see Daddy every day. I am so happy that Daddy can take me out to play this time. Sometimes, I deliberately make trouble, just to get Daddy to pay more attention to me and stay with me more.”

Huo Xiaoxiao’s cheeks deflated, and she sniffled. Her eyes were filled with tears as she said, “Daddy, do you know? All the children in our class go home with their parents every day; only I don’t. Every day, I am the last one to be picked up. I wish I was the first one to get picked up by Daddy, but… but Daddy never comes.”

“Xiaoxiao…”

Huo Xiaoxiao wiped her tears and continued, “I know that Daddy is busy. I don’t blame Daddy. I just want Daddy to accompany me more, play with me, and feed me… Other children’s fathers feed them, but Daddy never feeds me.

“I once asked Daddy whether work is more important or Xiaoxiao, but Daddy didn’t answer. Does Daddy think work is more important than Xiaoxiao?”

Speaking of this, Huo Xiaoxiao took a few steps forward, hugged Huo Suicheng’s neck, and buried her head in his shoulder. She blinked a few times, causing warm tears to drop on his neck.

""

“I know I shouldn’t be naughty, nor should I deceive Daddy. But it’s because I like Daddy so much. Daddy always ignores me and… Daddy promised me that he wouldn’t be so fierce towards me, but you are always so mean to me. That’s why I do this.”

Huo Xiaoxiao rubbed her cheek against his neck and said in a low voice, “I know I was wrong. But I will change in the future, and it won’t happen again. Can Daddy forgive me?”

When the warm tears came in contact with Huo Suicheng’s skin, it felt like a drop of water dripping into boiling oil.

As her soft cheeks rubbed against his neck, his nose could still make out the faint lingering smell of milk on Xiaoxiao’s body.

The anger in Huo Suicheng’s heart vanished, and he became softer than cotton candy.

“…Does Xiaoxiao think so?”

Huo Xiaoxiao nodded tearfully. “Yes.”

Huo Suicheng silently stared at her for a long time.

It was so long that Huo Xiaoxiao felt scared from the bottom of her heart, and her back broke out in cold sweat. At last, her father raised his hand and stroked her back gently. “It is also Daddy’s first time being a father. I am just too busy at work. I’m not purposely trying to ignore you.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

Huo Xiaoxiao laughed with tears still in her eyes. She rubbed her nose against him and said, “I knew it! Daddy didn’t mean to ignore me! Daddy is just busy at work. I will never disturb Daddy’s work again, and I will not be naughty. As long as Daddy can accompany me, I will be very happy!

“Daddy, are we going home tomorrow? I miss Grandpa.”

“Yes, we are going home.”

“Then, I have to go to bed early tonight so that I can see Grandpa as soon as I wake up!”

Huo Suicheng sighed. He wiped the tears on her face and replied, “Daddy will wash your face. You can go to bed after washing up.”

“Okay!”

Hui Suicheng helped her wash her face and got her into the bed.

“Daddy should also sleep early. Goodnight, Daddy.”

Huo Xiaoxiao closed her eyes and fell asleep contentedly, a smile still looming at the corner of her mouth.

It wasn’t until the door of the room closed and her father left that she opened her eyes and sighed in relief.
