Chapter 28: Into the Darkness
Lin Xin couldn’t bring herself to walk any further; her feet stood frozen outside the entrance. The world was never pure white–she knew this a long time ago, but she was afraid to face the darkness.
Suddenly, a figure rushed past her and stepped into the bedroom first.
“Lin Xinyu, why did you take off your clothes? Lin Xinyu, why are you in the Dean’s bed? Lin Xinyu, you…” Zhao Qiang’s voice trailed off until finally, only awkward silence was left in this suffocating room.
Lin Xin stepped forward into the darkness that she feared.
In this dim room, Lin Xinyu was like a helpless deer; his eyes were moist with tears and his small hands tightly hugged the quilt over him. He trembled when Lin Xin walked into the room. Before the girl had entered, he had already spotted her feet outside the door and knew it was her. He prayed dearly that she wouldn’t come in and see his dirty appearance. He was so dirty that no one else wanted to play with him. Lin Xin was his only friend. He didn’t want to lose her.
Lin Xin hadn’t approached his side yet. Instead, she looked at him from her spot and said calmly, “You should wear clothes or you’ll catch a cold.”
Her calmness left Lin Xinyu at a loss.
She pretended as if she couldn’t understand all of this and instead, spoke with a smile, “We’ve been looking for you for a long time so we could play with you. It turns out you took a nap here with the Dean.”
Lin Xinyu rubbed his eyes and gave a sigh of relief. ‘She didn’t see it right? Yes, that’s right. She’ll keep playing with me later.’ Lin Xinyu continued to wipe away his tears and gladly put on his clothes. He told her, “You’ll have to play with me more in the future. I’ll give you all the food I have.
Lin Xin turned around while Lin Xinyu got changed; she waited quietly, while her heart was overcome with unease and pain. She turned back to face him once she felt that the boy was finished dressing.
Zhao Qiang, who had been standing stunned by the wall, slowly came to his senses. In the middle of the day, Lin Xinyu had been lying naked on the Dean’s bed; not long ago, the Dean himself was on that very bed. Zhao Qiang was not so foolish as to be ignorant of what had occured. It was so shocking that he found it hard believe for a moment–that the man he considered as a father was actually a beast in men’s clothing.
Zhao Qiang wanted to leave this suffocating room and take a breath of fresh air to gather himself. He didn’t greet Lin Xin, and instead went straight for the exit. Just when he was about to touch the knob, the door suddenly swung open and slammed into his chest, causing the boy to fall on the floor.
Lin Xin looked up when she suddenly heard a loud crash. At this time, the Dean stood at the entrance and while staring at Zhao Qiang who was sprawled on the ground.
When the fire first broke out, he had no choice but to deal with the emergency first. Now that it’s been put out, he rushed back to Lin Xinyu’s side, but he never expected to find two more people in this room.
“How did you two end up here?” He asked Zhao Qiang,
Zhao Qiang was a boy who didn’t know how to keep secrets. Once he saw the Dean, he easily panicked. “W-we…”
Afraid that he would expose their ploy, Lin Xin quickly interjected, “The door was wide open so we came in to see if Lin Xinyu was playing here. We wanted to play here too.”
Zhao Qiang hurriedly nodded, “Y-yes, yes, that’s right.”
The Dean turned to Lin Xinyu and asked, “Is that so?”
Lin Xinyu nodded and moved slightly to hide behind Lin Xin. The Dean’s brow wrinkled in displeasure. He strode up to the frail boy’s side and pulled Lin Xinyu away before breathing out threateningly to the girl, “You stay away from him.”
