Chapter 39: Visitors at the Orphanage (2)

Lin Xin walked out of the crowd of children and stood up straight as she looked up at the lady who sat on the main seat. She had no idea why the teenager would call out her out of all the others; her goal wasn’t him, but rather, the mistress herself.

When the lady found that her son chose a sick child, she furrowed her brows before inquiring about the girl’s situation.

The Dean never expected the young master to notice Lin Xin at a glance.

In the past few days, she had been very obedient, which saved him the trouble of reprimanding her lately. Also, he didn’t want her to to directly interact with Lin Xinyu; for some reason, she gave off an invisible pressure that only an adult over twenty years of age could give off. This somewhat frightened the Dean when he thought about it.

The Dean bowed to the mistress and whispered, “The girl is too sickly, and the doctor said that her condition is too difficult to cure.” He apologized to the rich wife and young master for presenting to them a girl that suffered from infection.

The mistress turned to observe Lin Xin’s face and found that it was ghostly pale. The girl looked so sickly for her age when she should have been blooming healthily at ten-years old. But this poor child can only pass away quietly. The mistress couldn’t help but feel pity and compassion for this unfortunate child. If she could be cured, all would be well, but if not, wouldn’t she suffer greater pain?

The mistress gave her son a meaningful glance. Just one look and the teenager understood his mother’s intent. Xiao Tian originally pointed to the girl when he noticed that she was ill, but he had forgotten that his mother was a soft-hearted person.

The teenager replied, “I think it’s better if we adopt a boy.”

The mistress immediately answered, “Then you choose another one.” She may be sad for a while if that girl dies, especially since a life was precious. Although the mistress had already donated money to the orphanage for these past two days, she planned to specially have this girl go see a doctor.

When Lin Xin heard the young teenager’s words, her heart was gripped with alarm; this was an opportunity she couldn’t afford to lose. She straightened her back and said in a flat tone, “You must adopt me, I don’t want to die here.”

The teenager raised a brow and gave Lin Xin a scrutinizing stare. The young girl appeared delicate, but her eyes were bright and resolute despite her malnourished and undeveloped flat body. Although she was a child, her words were unusually calm. He wanted to see what she could do to convince him.

The young man retorted, “Why should I choose you? It would just be a waste of time to bring you back.”

Lin Xin glanced back at the Dean who stood next to the hostess; there was something unusual about the way they she looked at him. At this time, Lin Xin gave an ominous smile as if to declare war on him: Just you wait~

It was exactly that mocking and prideful look in her eyes that worried the Dean. This was a child, one that grew up in an orphanage. Someone who grew up in this environment should never have that kind of expression. He removed his glasses and wiped it with his shirt in order to cover up his panic.

Lin Xin sneered inwardly before speaking with a calm voice, “I have a photographic memory. I can even recite pi and its decimals to the tens and thousandth place.” She wasn’t merely boasting. In her previous life, she was able to succeed in school with perfect scores because of her powerful memory and sensitivity to numbers.

The boy’s head slightly tilted and he said with interest, “Since you say you can, then prove it.”

He ordered the Dean to hand a book over to Lin Xin.

《Comprehensive Mirror in Aid of Governance》 Lin Xin was slightly surprised to see this familiar book. It seemed that this world and her own world had many similarities. She opened to the first page and found that the content was exactly the same as the book in her previous life, along with the second page. After turning over five more pages, she closed the book and handed it back to the youth and said, “I’m ready.”

Afterwards, she recited the preface word for word, up to page five. The teenager was stunned, but he still wasn’t completely convinced that her memory could be so good. He asked the Dean to toss her another book that was less popular, and Lin Xin once again began to turn page by page. After flipping through several pages, she would recite them back to him perfectly.

“Do you still want me to recite pi to you?” Lin Xin challenged the youth. Her face was filled with confidence and her smile unconsciously revealed a superiority that she once carried from her past twenty years.
