Chapter 26: Headache Inducing Magic

Six or seven hours after fainting, Charles had finally woken up. As soon as he woke, he felt a sharp stinging pain in his head. Quickly grabbing the earlier prepared potion next to his bed, he chugged it down and closed his eyes to rest. After a moment, the dizziness in his head began to dissipate.

After opening his eyes for a second time, he saw the four man group standing right next to his bed staring fixedly at him. Even if the expression on Charles face was unnatural, everyone had felt a sense of unease.

“What are you all looking at!” Charles snapped. “Especially you Hermione, what are you doing in the boys dorm! This is the boys dorm right!”

Charles look around himself only to see the velvety red curtains decorated with the lion’s head. “So you did have a conscience!”

“I’m sorry. If it wasn’t for me, then your potion would have been fine and you wouldn’t have fainted.” Neville spoke somberly.

“Same here.” Ron followed up.

With the both of them being so apologetic, Charles couldn’t find it in himself to be too harsh, “It’s fine, forget about it! If it’s ruined, it’s ruined! As long as you guys aren’t injured!”

We’re fine.” The four answered.

“That’s good then.” The dizziness in Charles head was almost over. Taking a look, the eyes of the four of them were extremely bloodshot– a clear indicator that they didn’t sleep. At this, Charles felt his heart lax as the discontent he felt from last night begin to dissipate.

Forget it, children will be children. He thought. Throwing off the covers, he slowly got off the bed (He had not changed clothes), and holding onto the bed, he slowly pushed himself up from the bed. Both of his legs had used some muscle to support himself, but he felt extremely weak while the pain in his head came back with a newfound pain.

Agh! How strenuous. Charles thought bitterly.

Charles had a clear understanding of what the state of his body was. The protego variation spell he had cast last night had thoroughly used up all of his magic. Right now the headache and feeling of weakness was because his magic reserves was basically empty.

His eyes looked over at the males in front of him with an envious eye. How admirable, you have too much magic!

After many years of studying, when it came to spell repertoire, Charles could compete with a seventh year student or even students who had already graduated. But when it came to magical power, Charles was no better than a first year.

So at first glance, Charles looked as if he was filled with magical knowledge, skill, and was powerful. But when it came to actual combat strength, Charles was extremely weak. He was the one shot type of guy that could strike in a single strong burst. But he wasn’t the type of guy to be capable of multiple shots. This had made Charles feel extremely depressed.

Take a look at Harry Potter’s magical strength. In his third year, he had been capable of repelling more than a hundred dementors with a Patronus charm. When he read the books, Charles hadn’t thought much about it, but now that he was this world, Charles had a much better understanding of magic. Much to his shock, Harry had a magical strength that was no weaker than a seventh year in his third year. Apart from him, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger were the one of the only that were capable of coming close.

Out of the four of them, Neville had been the most idiotic at present, but even then, his magical strength was astonishing. To be frank, his magical strength was quite powerful. It was better than Ron and Hermione’s, and it could even compare with Harry’s. This was most likely due to him being constantly forced to show aptitude for magic in his family. The magic in his body was quite chaotic and unruly compared to Harry Potter, so when he casted spells, they usually ended up in failure. But given time, Neville’s body would grow in accordance with his magic strength and transform him into a powerful wizard. That was the reality of things; aside from the future Defense Against the Dark Arts professors, none at Hogwarts would be able to hold a candle to him later on.

Truthfully, Ron and Hermione both had the average magic strength as anyone else their age. But Hermione’s knowledge of magic and control had made her seem far better than any other witch or wizard in her age group.

Charles’ magic strength was at the bottom of the barrel basically. He couldn’t compare to Ron or Hermione, let alone Harry Potter. Such a fact like this vexed Charles to no end as he tried to find any way to resolve this. However, each one of them were incredibly dangerous and fatal if done wrong. So, Charles’ problem with his magic strength had been left unchecked.

But he knew that this problem had to be solved sooner rather than later. Otherwise when the time came for battle, his strength would give way and death would come encroaching in.

Naturally, Charles’ magic strength was tiny, but a single Protego wouldn’t be enough to drain him. Ultimately, he had been afraid of if the explosion from the potion would have been far too strong for him to contain. So for the sake of protecting everyone, he had decided to use the improved version of the shield charm which ended up depleting his strength. As for the Room of Requirements, he had no worry of it being in danger. In the seventh book, even the Fiendfyre that had destroyed the Horcrux did not affect the Room of Requirement’s ability to function.

“Ah, what time is it?” Charles suddenly asked.

“Nine in the morning.” Ron answered.

“Oh!” Charles replied before quickly grabbing four bottles of a potion and handed it to the group. Then giving himself two bottles, he leapt up and ran off under the mystified eyes of the four.

“Hold on!” Hermione turned to Ron, she spoke, “What time did you say it was?”

“Nine in the morning!” Ron spoke in confusion.

“Let’s go! It’s time for Transfiguration!” Hermione immediately leapt up to run as well.

“Wait for me!” The other three scrambled in fear as they ran after her.

Whatever potion he had been brewing last time hadn’t been figured out by the four, allowing Charles to let out a sigh in relief. How risky, Charles would definitely try to avoid using too much of his magic reserves next time. If not for the Space Ring he wore which allowed him to gain more sleep with less time, then he would have been asleep for the entire day. This would have made him unable to escape the wrath of the strict professor McGonagall.

Oh, that was a picture too horrifying to imagine!

When the incident with the exploding potion had happened, Hermione had figured Charles to be someone who was hiding something, but at the same time, he wasn’t super strong either for a first year. Charles had known plenty to score extra points for the Gryffindors. Hermione had already taken him to be a human library. Whenever she didn’t know the answer, she would be able to go to him for the answer. For Charles who had been trying to live a low-profiled life as a first year, he didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Thus, Hermione had coaxed and pestered Charles later during History of Magic before finally learning of the fact that the three-headed dog would fall asleep at the sound of music. Content, Hermione had let him be.
