Chapter 30: Troll

The two continued to live up All Hallows evening within the kitchen, and by the end of it, Hermione’s mood had already been nearly fully recovered.

“Let’s go then. We need to return and sleep. Tomorrow is a new start.” Charles spoke. Hermione nodded her head and the two began to leave the kitchens for their common room.

On the way, the two continued to chat with cheerful smiles.

Suddenly, Hermione’s narrowed, “Charles, do you smell something strange?”

Charles gave a mighty sniff, only to receive a stinky assault to his nose! That smell was akin to the smell of a pair of socks never washed for years before being used to clean the public bathrooms.

Bloody Hell, this smell can only mean one thing–Troll.

Charles could hear the dragging sounds of heavy footsteps across the ground and a deep guttural rumble from the Troll’s throat. Rushing to a nearby set of armor, the two looked to the end of the corridor where a giant dark figure came towards them after rounding the corner. Under the moonlight, the giant monster slowly revealed its figure.

What a heart-stopping sight to see! This monster was about 12 feet tall in height and had dark skin like cobblestone. Its body was overly bloated with pebble like lumps, and its head was like a shell of coconut.

Its legs were as thick as tree trunks with just as many horns coming out from it. The nauseating stench from earlier was coming from this monster. In its hand was a giant wooden club, but because its arms were so long, the club had ended up being dragged across the ground and created a loud scratching sound.

“Ah!” Charles’ hand quickly flew up to stop Hermione’s mouth.

With a shushing gesture, Charles pulled his hand away from Hermione’s mouth and pointed to the other side of the corridor, and then to the armor in front. Straight away, Hermione had understood what Charles was getting at: We’ll wait here and let it go past. She nodded her head in agreement.

Under the shadow of the suit of armor, Hermione and Charles huddled up close to each other without a sound. Not knowing that they were there, the troll slowly walked past the two and then turned around the corridor and out of sight.

“That was a troll!” Hermione was aghast, but she still managed to keep her voice low. “Just how could a troll get into Hogwarts? We have to report this to the professors!”

“Don’t panic.” Charles stopped her before pointing to the path where the troll came from. “There’s plenty of paintings where that troll came from, the professors and headmaster probably know already. All of the students are in the Great Hall, they’re probably having all the students split up to return to the common rooms. We should head back too.”

Thinking about it again, Hermione arrived at the same conclusion as well and nodded her head. Afterwards, the two began to make their way back to the Gryffindor common rooms.

But! A plan was never as wonderful as it sounded in reality! Before the two could even take two steps, the screams of two boys could be heard right around the corner where the troll had turned. Hearing the familiar sounds of these two, Charles couldn’t help but think, They’ve really screwed the pooch this time!

“That’s–that’s Harry and Ron! We have to save them!” Hermione cried out.

“Hold on!” Charles grabbed onto Hermione’s wrist. “Are you sure? Ron’s the way that made you cry.”

“That’s not important! What’s important is that we go save them!” Hermione struggled to free herself of Charles’ hand.

“You’re a good person, Hermione.” Charles patted Hermione on the shoulder before taking the lead towards the corner of the corridor. But the scene right in front of them had nearly made their hearts burst out with anxiety. In the wake of the troll, the girl’s bathroom had been totally destroyed. Tiles could be seen everywhere and the faucets had been reduced to pieces by the troll, spraying water all over the floor. Right in the corner, was Ron and Harry who had been forced there by the troll. The troll had already raised its giant wooden club in the air before swinging it vigorously towards the two. Up against the walls to Hogwarts, there was no room for either Ron or Harry to escape to if they wanted to move back.

In this seemingly impossible situation to escape from, no matter where the pair would try to escape to, they would be hit by the troll’s club. Whether they lived or not would depend on if Merlin was willing to receive them.

There was no other choice!

Charles flicked his wand before casting a “Wingardium Leviosa” towards Ron and Harry, causing the both of them to float up into the air and the club just barely missing them. Smashing into the wall, the wall broke apart under the weight and sent dust and stone flying everywhere. However, Ron and Harry had managed to escape with their lives through luck.

Afterwards, Charles cancelled the Levitation Charm and casted the Summoning Charm so that Harry and Ron would fly on towards him and be dropped accurately right by Charles’ leg. Truthfully, Charles could have casted a Cushioning Charm on the two so that they wouldn’t feel a thing when they fell. But because of Ron causing trouble, Charles had been forced to undergo that shameplay and squandered half of his All Hallows Day vacation. Thus, Charles felt exceedingly cross with him and even Harry as well. Why? I don’t need to justify myself, I’m just angry!

Fine then! He’s an idiot of the highest degree of chaos!

In the original works, Harry Potter and Ron Weasley had relied upon the golden halo that came with being the main characters and barely managed to survive and deal with the troll by using its own club. But Charles had no intentions on copying that method because the luck was far too much to consider trying again. For example, Harry had the good timing of jumping onto the troll’s neck while Ron casted the Levitation Charm to knock out the troll with its club. Using the Levitation Club to target the cudgel in the troll’s arm was far too risky. No matter what anyone said, a troll was classified by the Ministry of Magic to be a Class 4 Beast! A single first year wizard wouldn’t be familiar enough with the Levitation Charm to take away its only weapon and bringing it down. Such a thought belonged to a children’s fairy tale and nowhere else.

A troll was by nature dangerous beyond belief. Charles hadn’t wished to use any high level spells either. First of all, his magic was still insufficient. Secondly, using the Avada Kedavra, Confringo, Diffindo, or Impedimenta would only mean to say that one was mistaking the professors to be idiots! A single wizard by the age of 11, even if they were a genius, wouldn’t be capable of casting such a strong spell. For him to cast them here would be….you know. Charles had no wish to be carefully monitored at this moment.

Charles remembered what a wizard had once said in DND: There was no such thing as useless spells. Only useless wizards. Although a troll was dangerous, it was no fire dragon or phoenix in terms of explosive power. The troll’s strong point was its overwhelming strength and strong magical resistance. A piddling first year wouldn’t be able to leave behind even a scratch on its skin with what little offensive spells they knew. Naturally, its weak point was blatantly obvious–it’s low IQ. However, this was only a weak point. For one who had played around with the foundations of magic like Charles, he could use the Levitation Charm and a rudimentary Transfiguration type spell to deal with the troll with ease. Or at the very least, Charles was confident that he could make the troll lose its fighting ability.

Looking around the room, Charles had instantly formulated a plan. Waving his wand, the Levitation Charm had targeted the water on the ground and had it enter the bottle Charles had with him. (As a potioneer, how could one NOT have such an item with them?)

Seeing the troll already regaining its wits, Charles let out a loud cry, “Everyone run with me!”
