Chapter 10: Changing Goals

The weekend came and the sun bloomed ever so fervently high above the deep blue azure. Jackson had invited Peter and Harry to his home over the weekend for the sole purpose of strengthening their relationship after choosing to let go of the fifty thousand reward points.

Du du du!

Boom!

“Ah! I finally won!” The controller was thrown on the hardwood floor. Jackson almost jumped up excitedly. This was the first time he had defeated Peter in a game.

Peter laughed as he set the controller down on the table. A glint flashed in his eyes when looking towards Jackson. It seems his friend improved.

“What’s so exciting about winning so many rounds?” Caught in a state of happiness and reverie, the suddenly System appeared and echoed its thoughts throughout all corners of his mind.

“System, can you not bother me when I’m here having fun with my friends?” Jackson sighed, complaining to the System. In two weeks time, the System had yet to release its own line of mission. Jackson was able to live a normal lifestyle devoid of any magical beings which were a rare thing for him.

“Oh, it’s nothing. I’m just here to remind you that you really haven’t completed much of your main mission in becoming a superhero. Till now, you only completed ten percent of it so far. This is a very slow growth for the trajectory path of a superhero.” The System sighed, faintly reminding Jackson that he is not just an ordinary high school student but also a person who will become a superhero in the near future.

Of course I know this but it’s not that easy, you know? It’s really hard to find various excuses to go out late at night and even then, it’s not one hundred percent sure that I’ll be able to find bad guys. Completing ten percent of the mainline mission in two weeks can already be said to be very good.” Jackson responded reluctantly.

“Well, I can’t say much but I can remind you that although there is no time limit for the mission, the slower you finish, the more unfavorable it is for you. Also, if your goal is set on defeating those street thugs, then you really have narrow eyes.” Due to restrictions bounding the System, it can only provide a small hint. “You have to understand the contents of the mission clearly: Fight criminals in the streets and become a little bit well known.”

“You mean… instead of going out to find them every night, it’s better to find some bigger criminal organization directly so in this way, striking the heart of the organization, I’ll be killing two birds in one stone. Defeat the criminals while having my fame rise faster than normal.” Though the System did not elaborate clearly, Jackson understood the underlying meaning of the words spoken.

“That’s it! You’re not that stupid, after all. The purpose of the mission is to make your reputation stand out. By going about it in this way, it’ll prove to be rather effective.” The System replied contently.

“It is true that this is the case, but I don’t have the ability to fight a dozen or so criminals all at once. Even if I have already mastered the Middle-Grade Fighting Essentials and Soaring Dragon Method technique, it won’t be enough.” Though the System proposed a good idea, it will end in utter failure. Jackson knew fairly well his own strength. He can handle a few street thugs, no big deal, but to go against a notorious criminal organization, he was only seeking death.

“You’ll find a way.”

“…..”

“Just look at your own understanding.”

“Nn. I will need to plan well.” Jackson’s heart was firm and unyielding.

Du du du!

Boom!

“Ha! Jackson, it seems you still can’t defeat me.” While Jackson was discussing a plaguing issue with the System in his mind, Peter defeated him once more in the game.

“I have to continue practicing.” With some things bothering his heart, Jackson answered perfunctorily.

After Peter and Harry played a round of gaming, they finished the rest of their homework.

An hour later, the duo stood at the front entrance of Jackson’s house, saying their farewells to his parents.

“Uncle Lin, Aunt Mary, we’ll be going now.”

“Be careful on the road! Come over anytime you like!” Compared to Jackson’s father who remained quiet and complacent, his mother was much giddier. After all, one of Jackson’s friends was the young master of the Osborn Industries. She felt that she mustn’t neglect a kid who would grow into an important figure.

“Goodbye, Jackson.”

“See you in school.” Jackson smiled sheepishly and hugged the duo.

“You too!”

“You sleep well this weekend. Don’t fall asleep in class like last time.” Peter whispered.

“Nn.”

After sending his two friends away, Peter slammed the door and quickly rushed to his room.

Dash!

Slam!

Both Jackson’s mother and father heard and saw the ruckus their son had just made in a matter of moments as if he had something urgent to tend to. Jackson’s parents were rather speechless as they shook their heads while smiling.

Much to Jackson’s luck, they hadn’t come and ask what he was doing.

They didn’t believe he’d do anything bad but if they had known the purpose of their son, Jackson’s not sure if they are able to keep their calm.

Click!

Jackson locked the door behind him and quickly walked over to the desktop computer. With the System’s hints from earlier, a sudden flash of inspiration came to him.

Tak tak tak tak!

His fingers skillfully danced over the plastic keys, the sound of tiny clicks and little thumps roamed the air. Soon after, articles of information appeared on the search engine. Jackson smiled. Looks like he’ll find the information he needs.

“Ah, found it! Though I don’t know how much of this article is correct, I know they’re a big organization!” Seeing the fruition of his work, Jackson’s eyes lit up as he whispered to himself.

The desktop screen showed a piece of an article containing New York’s largest underworld criminal organization. Though the underworld organization had a notorious reputation, it is impossible for New York’s police department to kill off their existence.

If they did manage to apprehend the members of the underworld organization, at most, they’d only be catching the small time kitties and puppies.

The core reason why the underworld organization continues to remain in power is all due to the Frankenstein family, a long-established family with many histories. The Frankenstein family not only runs the underworld organization but also has a business located on the bustling streets of New York.

Many call the Frankenstein family New York’s cancer because they are already rooted deep within the echelons of society and cannot be cut off.

When the System reminded Jackson of a bigger fish to catch, he thought of these family full of criminals. Compared to going out late at night unsure of when a small-time thug will appear, these family already has their own business and a fixed territory in the underworld. It can be considered a much easier thing for Jackson to catch but however, there is a slight problem. The gap in Jackson and the Frankenstein family’s strength was too large.

But of course, Jackson had no plans to complete eradicate the whole family whose roots had already been placed in the heart of New York for many decades. He doesn’t have the strength to do so. That’s just not in the plan. What he intends to do is cause trouble for them, gain a little awareness, and boom, his mission complete.

He completes the mission.

He gets the reward.

He’s happy.

The System is happy.

Anyways, Jackson’s not a part of the police department and it’d be impractical and hard to explain if the family were to completely disappear out of thin air.

“Ok! It’s time for you to make me famous, Frankenstein family!’ Staring at the article’s piece of information regarding the underworld, Jackson clenched his fist, his fiery eyes glowing in determination.

Tak tak tak!

Jackson tapped once more on the keyboard, his fingertips beginning to mutter. He needed more information about the family. It’d be foolish of him to rush in without any knowledge. He’ll die for sure. Since he’s going to make trouble with them, understanding how they work is the first step to completing the mission.

……

Midnight came and Jackson’s parents fell asleep. Jackson closed the lights in his room. All was dark and there was no movement. The moon gleamed above, only showing a shadowy figure slowly opening the windows. Slowly but surely, the figure jumped straight out of the window and rolled as the figure landed on the bare ground.

Jackson who was skilled in the Middle-Grade Fighting Essentials and the Soaring Dragon Method technique surpassed the average human in the physical aspect. For Jackson, he would have no trouble jumping from the second floor over four meters high.

Jackson smiled as he looked up at the luminous moon.

Alright!

His eyes twinkled and quickly left the yard, his shadowy figure disappearing into the night.

……

Forty minutes later.

Jackson finally arrived at the nearest site where many underground activities conduct shady businesses. The place was located on a sparse area somewhere in Queens.

Jackson was breathing heavily. Though he practiced the Soaring Dragon Method to its efficiency, it used a lot of his energy. It wasn’t easy to run crazy hell nonstop.

After a short while of rest, Jackson began observing the environment near his vicinity. He quietly climbed on the roof of a low-rise house, his figure camouflaged with the use of the Phantom suit. The low-rise neighborhood didn’t have a lot of occupancies. Many of the homeless without any home or place to go to choose to spend the night in this area quietly with hopes the government won’t throw them out.

But on the other side of the spectrum, this place is also a natural breeding ground for many criminal activities occurring. Jackson had come to this place to try his luck. The news had reported several drug dealings and two mass shootings in this neighborhood in the past.

Jackson feels that it’s possible to deal with the generic drug trades occurring with his current strength. If ever he were to encounter a gun, and if for reasons is unable to hide or run away from the looming threat of the gun, he can just as easily use the protective device bought from the vault to block the oncoming bullet.

A short time passed and Jackson grew a little impatient. He had yet to find any suspicious activity occurring so he moved deeper into the neighborhood. He moved roof to roof, his movements soft, fluid, and subtle that none could detect his presence.

If there are no suspicious activities happening tonight, Jackson will need to gloomily head back home before his parents suspect something but deep in his veins, he had a hunch that he’ll be able to harvest something good tonight.

Hu hu!

After crossing past two streets, Jackson saw a sudden movement occurring in front of him. Audible whispers entered his ear. Jackson quickly slowed down and bent down, slowly heading towards the direction of the sound while holding his breath.

Thump!

Thump!

Before Jackson could make a move, he heard the sound of two doors closing.

Jackson’s brows tightened, a smug smile written on his face.

He’s all the more determined to accomplish his goal today for it seemed the people he found might be dealing with drugs.
