Ch. 5

Domo, Onion here~
This is my very first translation, so I hope it’s to your liking! I plan to upload every Monday this summer, but exams start next Monday, so expect something later in the week next week!

Enjoy the chapter!
(It’s full of notes, though, because I wasn’t sure of myself when I went through this.)

It’s now night, and Naoto is pumping water from the lake into the RV with an electric pump.
While it’s loud, the pump replenishes the water used by the shower through the intake port of the RV.
Naoto makes a face showing that things are going perfectly.
Suddenly, a cold wind blew from the lake. Naoto, who was still in his short-sleeve shirt, shivered.

“I should go back inside and get into the kotatsu.”

“Kuuuuu-n”

Naoto, returning to the camper, suddenly heard the sound of a puppy by his feet.
The puppy was at his feet when he came through the door.
It smushes its body on Naoto’s leg.

“Puppy, was the orange box good?”

As Naoto said that, he bent down and pushes the cheek of the puppy.
The puppy in response pushes back with its entire body.
Its tail was wagging so much that Naoto could hear the noise it made. The joy passed to Naoto, who became very happy.

“Woof, woof!”

“Ah, I can’t understand what you’re saying. I had hoped that because it was a different world, you could talk with me. What’s your name?”

“Kuuu-n?”

He stopped pushing the dog, and the dog, its tail still wagging, tilted its head.

“I thought not. I guess things can’t be that convenient.” (Naoto)

Naoto laughed and opened his hand [1]. The puppy licked it. As Naoto raised his hand, the puppy jumped after it.

“Cute. Actually, I was thinking how nice it would be to have a dog…”

Mumbling, Naoto crouched down, bringing his face to the puppy’s level. [2]

“Puppy, do you like it here?”

“Kuu-n?”

The dog leaned its head with a confused face.

“Here, here.”

Naoto went behind the camper, and opened the door to the veranda. [3]
In the evening, it’s the place where the puppy ignored the princess knight. [4]
The puppy ran there with a “pitter patter” and climbed up to the side of the veranda, like it was used to it.
The dog sat there and looked at Naoto.

“Woof!”

“I see, so you like it here.”

“Woof woof!”

“I didn’t know if I should choose a dog or a cat when I got the veranda, but this settles it.”

This put Naoto in a good mood. He had decided to have either a dog or a cat when he ordered the veranda.
Inside it, it seems like it’s outdoors, it’s no exaggeration to say that it gives the feeling of Japan. [5]
He imagined that Japanese-like dog and cat breeds would be in the veranda.
So it’s no problem that the puppy looks like a Shiba Inu. In fact, it’s perfect.

“I guess it’s really fate.”

Naoto said this while playing with the puppy.
He smiled, but then heard a rumble through the sound of the pump’s motor.
It was an easy to understand sound to Naoto, but it wasn’t made by him.
Looking down, he saw the puppy with a sad face.

“Aaah, are you hungry? Wait a just a bit.”

After he pet the puppy’s head and stomach, Naoto entered the kitchen area in the 6-mat [6]

“This is good to warm it up, I think.”

Remembering something he had heard before, he warmed the cup in hot water before transferring it to a bowl, and brought it back into the veranda.
He left it there, and the puppy started drinking immediately.
The puppy started licking the milk out of the shallow dish.
With its tongue out, it was licking around and around the plate. [7]
It’s like it was riding a merry-go-round.

“Woof!”

The puppy, who had made its way to Naoto, raised its head and barked. And again it licked, went around, came back to Naoto, and barked. [8]

“What kind of drinking is that?” [9]

Even though he said it that way, Naoto’s face was relaxed.

“Actually, where did Sofia go?”

He remembered about the knight who seemed to be more tired than himself*. (TL: riiight… What does Hokkori mean? I translated it as tired but…) He raised his head and Sofia was suddenly standing there a few meters away.

(TL: I’m just going to translate himekishi/princess knight as just knight until a plot point comes or someone wants it back. Too lazy…)

“So…”

“Ugh, you’re a coward…” (Sofia, I think…)

He tried to call out to her, but he dropped to the counter hearing a line he heard somewhere before. [11]
Naoto had the sudden feeling to say “Ogogot” [12], but he was more concerned about why she talked that way.

“Did I do something?” (Naoto)

“Wait!” (Still Naoto, I think…)

Sofia didn’t answer, and instead turned and ran away.
She ran away down the lakeside, her silver hair fluttering in the wind, towards the far away forest.

“Oi, the forest is dangerous at night! Take a flashlight with you!” (Naoto)

Naoto called after her with a megaphone, but she was already out of sight.

“Will she be alright?”

I should probably chase after her, Naoto worried.

“Something glowed… Oh, it’s her hair.”

A red light was glowing over the forest. He instantly knew it was Sofia’s magic.
Even in a distant place, the light shined brightly. [13]
Naoto stopped chasing for a moment, sat down on the veranda alone, and watched the red light go through the forest.

“Magic’s really a convenient thing.” (Naoto)

Naoto sat alone, next to the puppy who was still on the merry-go-round.
Sofia didn’t interest him (TL: The puppy, I think) at all.

“Hey, puppy, can’t you be a little nicer to Sofia?”

Naoto spoke to the puppy.

“She’ll probably interest you more anyway.”

“Woof!”

The puppy raised his face from the plate, wagged his tail, and barked.
He came closer and rubbed against Naoto.
A full course of a dog’s love.

“No, not me, act nice to Sofia.”

“Woof woof!”

“…Well, whatever.”

Naoto gave up because the dog can’t speak a language.
Sofia is taking her time, he thought.
Thinking that way, Naoto spaced out on the veranda.
At that time, the puppy finished its milk and put its chin on his thigh as if putting it on the edge of an orange box.
With half-opened eyes, Naoto had a spaced-out face.
The noise of the pump of the motor which had been on stopped.
To replace it, the puppy’s tail swayed and hit the edge of the veranda.

Pasat, pasat. [14]

Naoto thought that the water supplying was finished, but he can leave cleaning up the pump for later, he thought.
The calm lasted for a while.
Suddenly, a red light came out of the forest and came at the RV at great speed.

“I’m back!” (Sofia)

Sofia ran at a speed that would put current records to shame.  She ran in armor, too, but didn’t even get out of breath.

“Where did you go off to, hm?” (Naoto)

Naoto asked the question while sitting down, but loses his voice mid-sentence.
Sofia was holding something, something that made Naoto lose his train of thought.

“I brought these.” (Sofia)

“Are those… oranges?” (Naoto)

“Yes.”

She said that, and picked up an orange and held it in front of Naoto’s eyes.

“What are you going to do with that?” (Naoto)

He had a bad feeling of what it was, but he decided to listen to her explanation.

“It was drawn on that box, right? These oranges.” (Sofia)

“D-drawn…” [15]

Naoto looked inside the room. There in the corner was the orange box the puppy was placed in until a moment ago.
Like Sofia said, an orange was indeed drawn on the side of the box.

“That’s why I brought these. Naoto, also give me the kotatsu.” (Sofia)

“Kotatsu?” (Naoto)

“Yes, a kotatsu and oranges, if I have these then even I can-“ (Sofia)

Saying that, she looked at the puppy with expectant eyes.

“Aaah, that has to stay inside, sorry.” (Naoto)

“I see, so you’re trying to get in my way!” (Sofia)

“Wrong. Uh… I hate to say this, but…” (Naoto)

“What?”

“Dogs, they… Dogs don’t like oranges.” (Naoto)

“Eh?”

“Or rather, they don’t like smelling citrus at all.”

“No way…”

(TL: At this point, the software that I use to check if my translations are right sorta died… Bear with me for now.)

Sofia looked at the dog with eyes full of disbelief.
Maybe because it saw the large pile of oranges, the puppy’s tail stopped, and took on a wary pose.

“N-no…”

The results of her effort had gone to waste, the oranges that were her trump card had the opposite effect.
Sofia stood there with a face like the world was about to end.
Full of despair, her arms dropped all of the oranges she was holding on to.

“S- such a thing won’t…!”

With a tearful voice, she threw the last orange in her hand.
The orange flew in the direction of the forest. It was like Sofia threw all her sad emotions with the orange.
How to comfort her, Naoto asked himself at that moment.

“Woof!”

The dog barked and jumped towards the forest.
With a spaced out expression, Sofia watched the dog run towards the oranges.

“W- what happened?” (Sofia)
“…Ah.” (Naoto)

Sofia didn’t know what happened, but Naoto remembered something.
Right after that, the puppy came back with something in its mouth.
With an orange in its mouth, it came to Sofia and sat wagging its tail.

“I-is this…?” (Sofia)

“Let’s try this again.” (Naoto)

“Y-yeah…” (Sofia)

As he said it, Naoto took the orange from the puppy and threw it again.

The puppy ran again, and returned with the orange, wagging its tail while sitting.

“Hawaaa-n” (Sofia, I think)

The knight fell to the very first cuteness directed at her.

Translator notes:

[1] From a fist, I assume
[2] This is bad just because I can’t think of a correct way to say this in English. He lowered his face to the dog’s eye level. Oh wait, I just said it…
[3] It was veranda in the previous translation, right?
[4] The original says honenuki instead of ignore, but I’m not sure WHAT that means in this context…
[5] I’m sure I did this wrong. 室内のようで、屋外のような不思議なスペース、日本の心であるといっても過言ではない、縁側と言う空間。
[6] It was translated at 6-roku or something in the other one, but I believe it really means 6-mat, like it fits 6 tatami mats.
[7] This was repeated twice, I don’t know why. I took out the other one, unless it’s really necessary?
[8] I don’t know if I translated this right. Basically what’s happening is that the puppy is drinking the milk while walking around the plate.
[9] Once again, don’t know if I translated it right. Naoto’s making fun of the dog’s way of drinking.
[10] Riiight… What does Hokkori mean? I translated it as tired but…
[11] I think he tried to say “Sofia”, but he was interrupted.
[12] ????? It’s Ogougoto in the raws… Someone please tell me what it is
[13] It originally says that you know that it shines well, but… You know. It doesn’t make much sense in English.
[14] Japanese Onomatopoeia.
[15] Eh? I don’t get who’s talking or what they’re trying to say, sorry. They literally only say “d-drawn…”
