Do you hate bread?」

In that case, there’s nothing we could do about that. It must be difficult to live in this world if you hate bread… How sad…

「No, I don’t hate it, I just thought since I get to eat Yuuri’s homemade bento that, well… No, getting the dried kakuni is good too, but you see…」

Huh?

「Could it be that you’ve never seen a bread bento before?」

I can’t believe I just asked him such a stupid question. For me to ask a person who didn’t know what a bento was when they had mobile food if they have ever seen a bread bento is a silly question. Of course he hasn’t seen one before.

Kirika-chan tilted her head.

「There’s a bread bento? Kirika wants to try it!」

「Me too, me too! Is the bread going to look like a face this time too?」

This time, Rofas-san looked confused when he heard what Kirika-chan and Kurtz-kun said.

「What do you mean, a face?」

「Umm, so Yuuri-oneechan made Kirika’s face in Kirika’s bento yesterday.」

「That’s right! Mine had my face in it!」

Rofas-san tilted his head in confusion again.

Well, I don’t think he can understand with that explanation…

「Here’s the bread you asked for, Yuuri-san. I look forward to the meal.」

「Ah, thank you, Bryce-kun.」

Bryce-kun brought three pieces of bread for me. They’re the size of a softball each. Can he eat all three?

In any case, I cut the bread into halves, making six slices. It would be a little hard to use the slices that don’t have much surface area on both sides for sandwiches, so I placed them to the side to use for a different recipe.

The bread would taste good if it was slightly browned and crispy, so I put them into the oven for about a minute and a half.

Once the bread was a nice golden brown color, I took them out.

「Eh? Why are you cooking the bread? It’s like the yaki-onigiri too. You can eat them because they’re already cooked, yet you’re cooked them again. Yuuri, your hometown has some strange way of cooking.」

Rofas-san looked surprised.

It must be strange for them to see bread being cooked again. In Japan, we have things like toast, so we think it’s normal to do so. However, there aren’t many people that would do that to things like red bean bread or melon bread. Those are eaten as it is.

Oh, but you can heat up melon bread in a toaster oven, and it makes the outside nice and crispy. It’s very delicious.

Ahh, now I want to eat melon bread.

「Ahh!! What are you doing?! That’s mine, you know!」

Rofas-san took one of the toasted slices and ate it.

He crunched down on it, making tasty-sounding crispy noise.

「?!」

Rofas-san’s eyes glittered.

「Rofas-san, that’s MY bread!」

Rofas-san finished one slice and was reaching for a second one.

Bryce-kun had to stop him.

「Bryce, try some. This is great. I didn’t think the taste of bread could change this much just by slicing and cooking it in the oven.」

Rofas-san shoved a slice of bread into Bryce-kun’s mouth, so Bryce-kun had no choice but to chew.

「This is amazing, Yuuri-san. I thought bread was just something you tear apart and maybe dipped into soup if you want it warmed up, but this… It became something different just by slicing it and cooking it again. 」

Even Bryce-kun’s eyes were shining.

Eh? For some reason, I felt like running away after being praised for doing so simple…

I see. In this world, it’s normal for people to rip up the round bun to eat. They don’t seem to have a regular loaf of bread that you can cut. With round buns, you can just toast them as it is, but for a loaf of bread, you’d have to cut them into slices first.

Now that I think about it, bread has a history counting back to more than five thousand years ago, but I’ve heard that loaves of bread didn’t exist until two to three hundred years ago. Croissants were made around a hundred years ago, and the roll buns has a mere fifty year history.

Who did I hear all of this information from? Or was it on a poster at the bakery section at the supermarket? Either way, I understood that this world didn’t have loaves of bread people could cut into thin slices.

Still, hasn’t anyone tried cutting open the bun and sticking something in it?

Hmm. Well, whatever. I can eat in the way that’s normal in Japan here because I don’t know what the proper way of eating in this world is.

That’s because if I learned how to eat the way people normally do in this world, then… When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

I’ll end up worrying about things like,「I don’t want people to think I lack common sense,」or,「I don’t want to be ostracized because I do things differently myself.」

Women shouldn’t butt in! Don’t give your opinion in such a smug way! How disgraceful!

I recalled my husband’s words.

I wasn’t trying to be smug when I said those things, but… I suppose the way I phrased it was bad. It was difficult for me to figure out how I should speak so that I wouldn’t sound disgraceful… I ended up being afraid to say anything to my husband.

「Wait, Yuuri-san’s cooking may be delicious, but you eating my bread is a completely different story!」

「My bad, my bad! I’ll replace them for sure!」

I just noticed that the bread I freshly toasted had all been consumed.

「You can’t do this, Rofas-san. Even if you say you’ll replace them, you shouldn’t eat other people’s food without asking! Haven’t you heard that grudges about food are to be feared? You need to properly apologize to Bryce-kun, and ask for permission before eating!」

Huh?
