Surgeon – Chapter 1

Case 1: Acute Appendicitis (Part 1)

「Please reconsider it!」The guild master roared at the person who had placed his guild card on the reception desk of the guild. In other words, me. There weren’t many people who could endure Guildmaster Raven’s glare, as he was a former S rank adventurer who wielded a huge hammer during his active days, but I was different. The guild card I placed on the desk was gold, indicating S rank.

「Raven, I’ve already made my decision.」

「Don’t you realize the impact of losing a healer like you?!」

「Yeah, sorry about that.」

This argument was going nowhere. Actually, I was preventing it from going anywhere. After all, this situation was within my expectations, as I’d run through many simulations of this.

「There’s something that I want to do.」

「And what would that something be!?」

Among all the adventurers of the Western City Levantein, I stood out.
As a master of purification magic, I wielded powerful healing magic and could create potions of the highest quality. Rumor had it that adventurers had no reason to fear for their lives if I was in their party. My history did not prove them wrong.

「…」

「Are you even trying to convince me?!」

Raven’s fist pounded the table. The card bounced from the shock that rippled through the table. The guild’s desk was made sturdy enough to withstand brawls between strong adventurers, but it still gave way under the blow, ending up slightly tilted.

「I already told everyone. No one understood, though.」

「Obviously!」

「Well, I myself have already decided.」

I left my seat. I was certain that I wouldn’t be returning to Levantein any time soon. I’d been working here for several years and accepted many requests. I couldn’t deny I felt reluctant to leave.

「Mr. Shuji.」

Turning around, I saw Brad and Cedar standing there. Brad was a thief and Cedar a warrior. Cedar was about to cry. He’d only spent three years with me, since he joined the party after Raven retired, but Brad had accompanied me for more than eight years at this point. Both of them were A ranks.

「This party is going to break up once you’re gone. Well, it doesn’t matter. Just settle down in a place that suits you.」

With that, Brad began to walk out of the guild. As he opened the door to leave, I called out to him.

「Thank you for everything.」

「Yeah, same here.」

I couldn’t count how many times he had saved our lives with his scouting abilities. He was more resourceful than anyone else, and a very reliable man.

Cedar was still here.

「Mr. Shuji…I really can’t accept this after all.」

When Cedar joined our adventurer party, he had said that he admired me and Raven. He was a young warrior who possessed great physical strength and had become a shield for everyone in many situations. At first, he had been fixated on imitating Raven, but soon grew into a splendid warrior in his own right when he developed his own style.

「Sorry, Cedar.」

Once, A battle with demons left Cedar close to death. If it weren’t for my recovery magic, he would have bled out and died. I was pretty sure no other healer would have been able to save him. It was lucky that he survived. However, I also realized my limits back then. Rather, it was at that moment that I’d realized that I’d better make preparations to leave.

I put my hand on the now crying Cedar’s shoulder and left the guild without looking back. It sounded like something broke behind me. It was probably the sound of Raven completely breaking the already-damaged table.

I’d already packed everything. When I returned to the inn where I’d set up base for years, I thanked the innkeeper and his wife. Both said they would miss me.

「Where are you headed off to now?」

I wasn’t going to say what I was going to do, but it was probably fine to tell them where I was going.

「To Yggdrasil.」

「Oh, the place with the World Tree.」

「Yeah, it’ll be a long journey even with a carriage.」

The town of Yggdrasil was on the other side of the continent. It would take about a month traveling by carriage. However, it was fine, as I had no reason to rush.

「You have a lot of luggage, eh.」

「Yeah, although most of it is made up of books.」

「You really are a studious person.」

I was allowed to store books in a room of the inn, but because the floor was beginning to give way, I rented a warehouse nearby. Most of the books would have been thrown away, so I donated them to the guild. I only brought the really important and valuable ones, but the carriage was still full.

「I think…I’m going to enjoy this trip.」

After saying my final farewells, I got onto the carriage. I made sure the load on the cart would not fall and then walked the horse out of Levantein. It was going to be a slow and leisurely journey… Or so I thought. Too bad life had other plans.

「So, you’re going to Yggdrasil?」

The horse suddenly stopped moving. I sighed and spoke to the person who was behind this.

「Reina, please don’t cast spells on the horse.」

「You think you have the right to ask me anything? You haven’t even listened to what I’m going to say yet.」

It was Reina, a party member. She was an S rank mage. Reina and I were friends ever since we were both invited to Raven’s party eight years ago. However, Reina was only eighteen years old when she joined, currently twenty-six, so she was still young. I was already thirty-five now. Only a genius could have achieved S rank at such a young age.

「Tell me, why are you going to Yggdrasil? Also, you could’ve just come to me earlier and have me teleport you there with my transfer spell. Isn’t Yggdrasil on the other side of the continent?」

Of course, if I used her transfer spell, I could travel to Yggdrasil immediately. Reina had a lot of mana, so she could teleport me from Levantein to Yggdrasil.

「Sorry, I didn’t want to involve you.」

But if she found out what I was going to do there, then she would have tried to get me to go back to being an adventurer. I didn’t want that. Besides, Reina and the rest were still important adventurers in Levantein, and had to stay. Though, I was not really in the position to say this.

「Is it dangerous? Well, isn’t that normal for us?」

「Reina and the rest should have things to do. I’ve already retired from adventuring.」

「…follow…」

「What?」

「I want to follow Shuji!」

Reina’s face turned red as she suddenly took out her guild card and disappeared off somewhere using her transfer spell.

「… You said you were going to follow me… and then you went off somewhere.」

Female behavior was incomprehensible as usual. Even though she was a mage who possessed strong magic abilities and had mastered advanced level dark magic, Reina sometimes behaved irrationally.

「Oh well, there’s nothing I can do if I’m caught.」

The carriage rode on. It seemed the paralysis spell that Reina cast on the horse was already removed. The horse was a little frightened, but I calmed it down somehow and managed to get the carriage moving again.

「Ahhh?!」

As I advanced a little, Reina’s voice came from behind. Did she come back again?

「I said I was going to follow you, so why are you leaving?!」

Reina ran behind the carriage and got on while being angry.

「You can’t do that.」

「I retired too.」

「Eh?」

「Raven was terrifyingly mad, so I knocked him out with my sleep spell.」

What the… The guild was probably in chaos by now. Two S ranks retired.

「Reina, go back right now and apologize to Raven.」

「Nope, I’m following you, Shuji.」

「Why are you following me?」

My back was kicked. Ouch.

「Idiot! Idiot Shuji!」

So unreasonable! I didn’t know why I was called an idiot, so naturally I asked why.

「Anyway, if we stay here, people from the guild might chase us, so we are going to teleport.」

「Ehh? Hold on…」

「Teleport!!!」

Reina forcefully teleported us, along with the carriage, to Yggdrasil with her transfer spell. The scenery changed instantly. I was a little bad with teleportation. I had a bad case of motion sickness. I didn’t throw up, but I almost did.

「Come on, we’ve arrived! So, where to now, and what are you going to do?」

Ahh, so pushy. I noticed we were at the entrance of the town of Yggdrasil. The gatekeepers had been startled when we suddenly appeared through teleportation.

「For the time being, let’s find an inn.」

「Good idea. I wonder if we can stay at the inn we’d been to before.」

「Yeah, that inn was nice and clean.」

「My magic is almost exhausted after teleporting all the way here.」

Last time, I had come to Yggdrasil while on a quest. At that time, Raven and Brad were also with us.

Thanks to Reina, my travel expenses were reduced considerably. I decided it wasn’t a problem if we got a slightly higher quality inn like we did in the past, and I would treat Reina as a way of thanking her.

As the name suggested, Yggdrasil was home to the World Tree just north of the town. Rather, it could be said the town was built where it was not covered by the tree’s shade. Furthermore, as the World Tree grew upwards, there was a hollow part in its interior which had turned into a dungeon that was divided into several layers. Incidentally, the sixth layer was part of the roots and not the trunk. It was speculated that the top of the World Tree was the 20th layer, but it might be even higher.

We checked in to the inn and left the carriage outside. After all, the horse didn’t walk much, so it wasn’t too tired. I had no plans to use it here, so I was trying to decide between selling it or having Reina send it back to Levantein.

「The chicken dish in this bar was excellent.」

「Yeah, I want to eat it again!」

To be honest, I had already given up on persuading Reina to go home. Actually, I was happy that she came along with me.

When we entered the bar, there was only one free table. It was still early evening, but it was quite crowded. I ordered roast Yggdrasil chicken, a local specialty, and ale to drink with it. It might be the first in a long time that I was drinking with her alone. For the past few years, I had been with everyone as an adventurer.

「Reina.」

「So, what are you going to do now? What are your plans? Tell me.」

「Hold on a bit. There’s no turning back after you hear about this.」

「Yeah, that’s fine. I already said I’ll follow Shuji.」

Did she think she would earn a lot of money if she tagged along with me? Well, she wasn’t wrong, but she was better off continuing as an S rank adventurer. Where should I start? Even if I explained everything to a gullible person, they wouldn’t understand nor believe it either.

「I’m different from a normal healer.」

「I know that. Aren’t you the best healer in Levantein?」

「No, not that. I’m not a healer in the first place.」

「Huh? Then, what are you saying?」

Reina’s hand, which was holding her knife over a piece of roast Yggdrasil chicken, stopped. Oh right, if I said it that way, it would imply that I had tricked Reina and the rest for 8 years.

The entrance of the bar suddenly became noisy while I was worrying about how should I word it. It seemed some adventurers were making a racket. Well, this was the Adventurer’s Guild bar in Yggdrasil after all. I didn’t think anything about it because it was open to the public too, but we had retired from the Adventurer’s Guild. I felt a little loneliness in my heart.

「It’s better to show you rather than explain it, but for now, just know that I’m special.」

「I have no idea what you’re talking about.」

Reina looked troubled as she resumed eating the Yggdrasil chicken. I also wanted to do my best at explaining, but I didn’t know how.

I gave up after thinking about it a while. She would know after a few days of observing my actions. Reina put on a grumpy face as she seemed to understand that I had given up on explaining, but she proceeded to drink the ale with gusto.

「Is there a healer in here?!」

At this time, one of the adventurers making a racket at the entrance of the bar shouted out.

「Anyone is fine! I’ll pay later!」

It seemed his healer’s mana supply had run out. Did they want to save a fallen comrade? A warrior-like man was shouting desperately.

「What’s the matter?」

「Err…」

This was an unfamiliar land. If this were the Adventurer’s Guild in Levantein, all eyes would’ve focused on me at once, but this was Yggdrasil. Instead, a few healer-like people from among the customers left their seats and went to the entrance. I thought I would leave it to them if it was just a common injury and thought of continuing the meal with Reina. Instead, I ended up listening to the racket by the entrance. Reina was also behaving the same way.

「M-my stomach hurts…」

「You’re not injured anywhere, though. How long did your healer use healing magic on you?」

「A, a long time…」

「What?! Could it be… a curse?!」

「I don’t know, but he doesn’t have mana anymore. Please, use your healing spell!」

A curse. Those words caused a stir in the bar.

Healing magic was not effective against curses. No matter how high the level of healing magic used, it could at best temporarily suppress the pain, but it would not be able to cure it completely. Therefore, a curse referred to an abnormal condition where healing magic was ineffective.
There were no known methods to cure a curse. For this reason, people who were afflicted by a curse had to wait for the curse to disappear on its own while having healing magic cast on them. Healing magic was often used to relieve the pain, but the pain would return immediately. The compensation for the healers was quite expensive too, even if they couldn’t save the patient.

I was only watching a short while, but the adventurer seemed to still be afflicted with the curse, and the few healers who healed him couldn’t make him better. The adventurer was curled up on the floor groaning in pain, sweating profusely from his forehead, with a flushed face.

「Shuji, what are you going to do?」Reina asked.

She was asking me whether I would go and use my recovery magic. Reina likely thought gaining influence here as a healer would be one of my options if we were going to live here. However, I did not have any intentions like that.

「Reina, hold on a moment. I am not going to be a healer here.」

「Then, are you going to ignore him?」

「No, I’m not going to let him die, so rest assured.」

Reina looked uneasy when she thought I was going to let the adventurer die. She had a kind heart.

「There’s no more mana!」

「There is a clinic with a healer in the back. The healer is an alcoholic, but they should have mana too.」

Even when all the healers who had gathered cast healing magic continuously on him, the adventurer’s abdominal pain was not cured. His companions nearby seemed to have given up hope.

「Neumann…why is this happening…」

「D-don’t cry. Adventuring with you guys…was fun….」

「You idiot! Don’t give up!」

The healers were particularly stubborn. Even though they were short on mana and could no longer heal, not one stood up to leave at all.

「Miria…it’s not your fault…」

「Neumann…sorry…」

Many of the customers in the bar turned their eyes away from the scene as they couldn’t stomach it. Reina probably felt the same. Her food had not diminished at all.

「Reina.」

「Y-yes?」

「I need your help.」

I drank the ale and put the Yggdrasil roast chicken into my mouth. I chewed hurriedly and swallowed while gesturing for Reina to eat.

「Eat faster.」

「I, I know.」

The adventurer seemed to have been taken into the clinic in the back. They probably wanted to cast more healing magic there. However, I knew it couldn’t be cured with recovery magic.

「There’s still a little mana left in you, right?」

「Yeah, just a bit.」

「That’s enough.」

I was glad Reina was here. What I wanted to do couldn’t be done by me alone. I needed a black mage too. I was thinking of employing one here in Yggdrasil, but I didn’t expect I would get a job so quickly.

「It’s not going to be cured.」

「Hm? Of course it is.」

「It’s a curse, isn’t it? No matter how much Shuji will cast your healing magic, it won’t be cured.」

「Certainly, healing magic can’t cure it. But you see…that’s not a curse.」

「Then, what is that?」

I smiled.

「That is his appendix. To be more precise, he has acute appendicitis. And I can treat it with surgery.」

The truth was, I was a surgeon named Miyagi Shuji, who was transferred to another world from the country of Japan.
