Chapter 10.2: Mirror, Mirror (2)

“Managat.”

Sarikit gently shook the merman's shoulders. The latter stood up drowsily.

“Managat, wake up. Sagi is gone.”

“Who’s Sagi?” replied the merman who's obviously still half-asleep.

“The little one,” the young mermaid answered sulkily.

The merman stretched out. He mused to himself: why would the little fairy disappear? Its kind does not randomly leave its imprint on a whim.

“Please, Managat” pleaded Sarikit. “Let’s find him.”

He finally roused from his bed and while holding the little mermaid's hand, they exited the room together.

The merman tried to dig from his memory the things Maalam thought him back from when he was still young. Lambanang-tubig or the water fairies are presumed to be faithful and honest creatures. They will never carelessly leave their imprints for no reason. In the event that they really went away without their imprint's knowledge, it probably be just around the corner. They have a curious and inquiring nature.

“Have you tried calling it, Sarikit?” Managat asked the other.

“Not yet,” she replied briefly.

“You try. Water fairies are connected to our minds. No matter how far, it will surely hear you.” He explained.

The little mermaid nodded and through her mind she called the water fairy.

Sarikit suddenly stiffened which surprised Managat. She seemed to be surprised.

In that very moment, Sarikit was able to watch what her fairy, Saginrawa, was seeing. It was inside an obscure room in the Palace where the collected objects from cleaning the ocean floor were kept. Those were the trashes that the mortals threw haphazardly to the ocean.

The fairy was in front of a luminous object with a smooth surface. From there it's watching the moving images of some mortals.

“Sagi is in the 'Hinigkuan Room'.”

“Hey, negra1.” Roselda called teasingly to her friend, Marissa.

The group was sitting all crowded inside the white van that's now running through the dusty road to their destination. It was all bushy trees and lush vegetation on both sides of the road.

“Where did you borrow this car?” she continued.

“Ay,” Marissa reacted. “You think this face can't afford this? Excuse me, Roselda Mae de Vera. This car that you're riding right now actually belongs to my future husband.”

(TN: Marissa refers literally to her face or how beautiful it is that she can get a car after getting a boyfriend. This is not a Chinese novel. XD Also, 'excuse me' here has the same meaning with 'Duh')

“Future?” Japeth cut in, “Oh my Marissa, who told you that you have a future? Have you forgotten that I'm the clairvoyant here? Look at my eyes.” He then deliberately rolled his eyes up until the black has disappeared, as if having a seizure.

Everyone giggled.

“Che!” Marissa glared at him. “You homo. Such a villain.” She moved closer to the guy who's on the driver's seat and tilted her head to his shoulder. “You guys are just envious 'coz you don't have a boyfriend.”

(TN: 'che' is somewhat like a 'hmp'; 'homo' hear is once again used to call affectionately or jokingly to a friend, just like the term 'witch' from previous chapter)

Roselda finally noticed that the man in charge with the wheels was also the man that her friend met previously when they saw each other in town.

“Ah, boyfriend-talk. I lost.” Japeth promptly responded and huddled rather tightly with Mirasol. “Right, Mira?”

“I’m not allowed to have a boyfriend yet,” Mirasol said. “So I’m out from that talk.”

Roselda, Japeth, Mirasol and Lloyd seated in the backseats of the car, whereas, Kara and Mike, the unbreakable couple of the group, and Erika who's together with another boy were at the middle seats. Roselda has not met this other guy but most probably he's her friend’s boyfriend. And finally, Marissa and her 'future husband' were at the front seats.

“How about you, Eda?” said Erika. “When will you introduce your boyfriend to us?”

Everyone's attention was thrown to her.

“Exactly,” Kara added. “You have many suitors from school."

“Err, I haven't thought of that yet." Roselda replied frankly. “Anyway, it can still wait, right?"

However, in that moment, she had thought about the merman. She couldn't tell what she's feeling at that moment, but one thing she's quite sure about, she was happy every time she's with him.

"Sagi!" Called the little mermaid to her fairy. It looked back to her and spun towards her.

“Why did you suddenly disappear without telling me?” Sarikit tenderly stroke the fairy. Her face was evidently delighted that she has found Saginrawa.

They were in the Hinigkuan Room, the room where they throw away the mortal litters. The vast room was located in the lower part of the Palace and the surrounding area was very dirty. Here and there laid things that have unknown use and whatnot; mostly non-biodegradable and extremely durable. Many of these items even have sprouted some corals and seaweeds.

The merman noticed the luminous object that the fairy was playing with earlier. It gave a fascinating light but when the fairy swam away from it, suddenly that light disappeared. He thought he had seen some figures moving inside the object the moment they entered the room.

“Sarikit, put Sagi again there.” Managat told her as he pointed on the luminous thing.

The three approached the object. Then the little mermaid let her fairy touch it as they stood next to it. When her fairy's tiny hands reached it, there was a glaring light. Then images of some mortals appeared inside. They seemed to be having fun.

“Managat,” called Sarikit. She was frightful to the images and held on the merman's hand tightly.

“Do not be afraid, Sarikit.” He watched the mortals on the display intently. They seemed to be inside a tight room. But then he realized that one of them was the young woman named Eda, his mortal friend.

1Negra - black woman; a Spanish term which is the opposite of Negro (black man). They are typically used to describe someone with dark skin. They can also be used as some kind of endearment or a passing joke between friends and peers but can also be used as derogatory name-calling.
