Chapter 25: King Kong

“Eh? No benefits at all? How can that be?!” Merlin’s heart palpated in indignation.

“For example?” Kailar tilted his head and raised his brows whilst pulling the other inside the treehouse cabin.

“For example, sages suddenly begin to gain knowledge of the world, suddenly understanding worldview knowledge many others aren’t capable of.”

“But I always understand, Merlin.” Kailar retorted with a smile.

“For example, growth of magic progresses at in infinitely tremendous pace. Sages grow stronger, minds more clear and tranquil, the ability to calculate tactics and so forth grow faster. Is this not an obvious change and one with benefits too?”

“Now that you mention it…” Kailar lowered his gaze and stared at the palm of his hands. He wiggled his fingers and spread them apart. Suddenly, a violent torrential wave unfolded and a round globe of white light appeared. “Recently, I feel as if I’m able to comprehend the use of magic with ease no matter the difficulty. Could this be the benefits you speak of?”

Kailar’s brows furrowed. “But what does this have to do with the title?”

“You don’t know?” Merlin smiled, her heart jubilant and ecstatic. Finally, she’d found something this little monster did not know.

“Know what?” Kailar inquired, his interest piqued. He considered himself an intellect and hence was always inclined to search and explore the unknown frontier, a trait many of intellects from all walks of life hold. When things garner his attention, Kailar was, of course, motivated to find out.

“Hehe…” Merlin giggled and covered her soft lips. “Beg for it! I’ll tell you if you ask me!”

Kailar frowned, angry for a short while. “Fine. If you aren’t willing, I’ll just guess.”

“Based on your previous hints…” He pondered, pacing himself back and forth.” “The recent changes occurring within are related to the title of a sage.”

“In other words, all the changes are caused by the title.”

“Plus the previous speculative guess…”

His eyes grew ambiently dignified. “This title granted by the king has the power to bestow strength onto its holder?”

“Good!” Merlin nodded. “This title has been passed down from one person to another over the passing of time. The current holder of the title is able to draw strength from previous wielders of those who came before you. This is the rule of the world. It seems you finally understand.”

“What a nasty feeling.” Kailar held his head, his countenance revealing an expression of disgust.

“The principle behind such tradition I can guess. It’s like the natural laws of human rights which are granted by the king. I don’t like the feeling and idea that my own powers are controlled by others.” Kailar sat down and shook his head.

He was completely unaware all this time of his sudden increase in strength was related to the title and King Uther himself. He hated it so much the globe of light spun around him, rotating so adamantly like the twelve constellations in the night sky.

“I’m beginning to despise the king.” He spat out bitterly as he pointed his fingers. The twelve globes of light suddenly flew towards a certain direction. “Alright, we should go now.”

“Alright, don’t be upset. You know this is not the fault of the king.” Merlin was cautious of Kailar’s anger. With his intellects, it was sure to cause the king many problems.

Kailar: ╮(╯_╰)╭

He shrugged and turned towards the weaved basket.

“Where are going?” Merlin called out.

“The battlefield.” Bringing the two knight apprentice with him, Kailar pulled on the rope.

The weaved basket hanging overhead slowly made its descent. The trio saw the two-hybrid horse eating leisurely on the green moss, their heads bowed down.

Kailar whistled and the little unicorn happily galloped its way back.

The unicorn need not the use of a rein, only needing Kailar’s whistle or a pat on the neck to know what Kailar wished to do.

Kailar rode on the unicorn and moved towards a direction followed by the two knight apprentice.

“Let’s go. We’re heading to the battlefield.”

“Cousin, how did you know it was this way?” Gawain asked nervously. It was his first time spent in Nottingham Forest.

A ball of light gleamed and flew again, it’s direction changing every so often.

“Magic.” Kailar smiled, no longer hung up regarding the issue of King Uther and human rights.

“Ha!” Kailar patted the unicorn’s neck and it swiftly shot forward like a white arrow.

Gawain and Attolis struggled to follow Kailar from behind. It was clear the uneven terrain was unsuited for the horses they rode.

On the contrary, the unicorn was like a gazelle, jumping up and down the bumpy tree roots excitedly.

“Oh, I found a devil beast.” Kailar suddenly stopped and ominously said to the two knight apprentice who’d just caught up.

“Cousin, don’t joke around.” Gawain shuddered. “This is not funny at all.”

“No, I’m serious.” The smile vanished from his lips and the airs of seriousness replaced his carefree attitude. “It’s a giant. With our current strength, we’re unable to defeat it. I’m not sure if we should go check it out or not.”

“Let’s go.” A sudden trace of firmness appeared on Attolis’ features. Her soft features hardened into a resolute expression. “Knights will never retreat in face of danger!”

Gawain smiles wryly. “Brother, you aren’t a knight yet!”

“Alright. Let us go and have a look.” Kailar urgently needed information regarding devil beasts. After receiving a big surprise from Gawain and Attolis’ hand to hand combat progress, the title of the sage, he felt the need to gather more information of the world lest he fall behind.

Despite steeling himself and the determination to recruit and train the orphans into his intelligence unit upon his return, he realized it was still too early.

We’ll just go and take a look. If we can’t defeat it, we’ll just run away.

Kailar pondered over the matter.

The trio moved towards the place Kailar mentioned.

“How big…” When they saw the figure of the devil beast, their bodies shuddered.

Attolis’ voice grew quiet and a slight whimper escaped her lips.

Gawain trembled in terror from top to down. Though he’d later be revered amongst the masses as the member of the Knight of the Round Table, he was only a young boy who’d yet to mature.

Kailar watched Gawain trembling. He silently cast a light of magic. Soon, calmness slowly spread through Gawain’s body.

“Quiet down.” Kailar whispered.

He turned his head towards the front and stared the at the giant devil beast, observing it in great detail.

It was a large ape—no, it would be more appropriate to call it King Kong.

Within the lush forest which had existed over a thousand years, the canopy towering hundreds of meters high barely covered the crown of its head. It was also an omnivorous being and such is the reason why the whole forest is able to support such a huge devil beast.

Kailar guessed.

How much food does King Kong need to fill its belly full?

Scientists are able to tell how much, if their digestive system allowed it, they’d spend most of their time eating or else’s they’ll weaken and die from malnourishment.

Fortunately, there is such a big forest.

Kailar was fortunate otherwise King Kong would’ve surely headed out of Nottingham Forest in pursuit of food. This King Kong wasn’t picky about human flesh either.
