Chapter 006: Uther Pendragon

“All right.” Kailar nodded, accepting the temptation laid before him.

In this era where the world lacked technological advances and health awareness, what could be more reassuring than having a life-saving spell to deal with cases of flu and virus?

A peace of mind, maybe?

But even if Kailar had no plans to use it on himself, his parents eventually will fall into that age-old cycle. If any disease were to invade their bodies, treating them the traditional way would prove invaluable and slow. Their resistance to the disease would be rather low, unable to resist—ultimately falling to their death.

“All right. I’ll teach you. Let’s see if you have the capabilities.” Merlin waved her hands, somewhat doubtful whether the little boy had the qualifications to learn healing magic.

Kailar nodded, all the more willing to accept the new knowledge imparted unto him. But could he learn it? Of course he could. If he didn’t, then so be it. This sort of drawback held no significant meaning to him.

Merlin herself lacked the skill in healing magic and was more or less inclined towards alchemy and pharmaceuticals hence her lacking in healing magic. But regardless, though she didn’t know much about the contents of healing magic, the knowledge was still vividly clear in her head and with that, she imparted unto Kailar what she knew.

Just as a physicist lacks the knowledge towards the process of creating an atomic bomb or a chemist who doesn’t know how to create penicillin, Merlin was the same. Although she can teach, she herself can’t practice the arts of healing.

But…

“My god, it’s only been two hours…” Merlin’s eyes flashed. Looking at Kailar showing an aptitude towards magic, she felt like an uncultured swine.

He had already fascinated her but his next act all the more chilled her body to the core. She watched Kailar grab hold of the dagger and slit his wrist without flinching. She watched blood gush out and drip to the wooden floor.

“Are you crazy?!” She shouted as she watched him treat the cut with the use of healing magic.

Just as slowly, the cut healed under the light of the healing magic. Eventually, the long reddish cut was replaced by a fully new grown muscle.

Thereafter, Kailar raised his head and nodded gently. “It works… it takes only a short few seconds to heal a wound as opposed to days were it not for the help of healing magic. I’m not sure if the underlying principles of healing magic promote the rapid generation of cells near the wound or reversing time…” A total of seventy-eight theories plagued his mind.

Merlin hadn’t responded to his theories so he could only assume that she didn’t know. Disappointed, Kailar sighed and let the matter go.

“But there are also shortcomings. I’m not sure how effective this is for curing internal illnesses.” Kailar shook his head, his big oceanic green eyes staring straight at Merlin.

“Internal illness? Can the inside body get sick?” Merlin asked.

That’s right. The peoples of this world were nothing but uncultured and uncouth. The world believed that headaches, fevers, and cold chills were the works of the devil and thus needed to be burned directly lest they wished to be infected by the devils’ spawn. And of course, they believed it was better to burn than die so as to prevent the spread of infection.

And since Kailar hadn’t yet taken his father’s seat, he chose not interfere with the customs of this world but now that he had this sort of healing method, there are many things he could do.

Kailar’s brain instantly churned.

“Well, don’t be too happy. This is all merely basic healing spells. You haven’t yet learned aid, defense, and even resurrection after a few minutes of death!” Merlin said, refused to be pressed down by the little boy.

“…..”

Kailar didn’t disdain the idea of resurrecting the dead against the law of heavens. The dry river rises because of rain yet it floods. The cut forest grows lushly because of the buds yet it takes many years, decades even. The living creates a new life yet the person in question labors in hardship in the face of death. To reverse the heavens, one would surely pay a hefty cost whatever it may be.

“All right, all right! It’s not good to be proud and arrogant that you managed to get to this point. That will be all for today. Your knight is anxiously waiting for you below. It’s been over three hours.”

If Leyton hadn’t known the young lord’s habits of forgetting the passing of time, he’d surely toil himself to come up here.

“Tch.” He clicked his tongue. “Because of you I haven’t written a single word.” Kailar complained before facing Merlin. “That’s right. You’re not that stupid as I thought. Anyways, would you like to come to my Red Leaf and help assist my father, Andrea Ettorek?”

“Hehe…” Merlin covered her mouth and giggled. “Andrea… that stupid bear isn’t worthy of my allegiance. Also, I serve the king now but if you inherit your father’s in ten years time, I might be willing to help you.”

Kailar frowned and turned his head quickly.

I was only asking for your assistance to increase my standing. I’ll be thirteen in ten year’s time and I’ll have already accumulated prestige to take charge of my people.. what need will I have of you then?

Gently shaking his head, Kailar replied. “That’s all for today. I’m leaving.”

“Then I’ll stay here and wait for your next return. Don’t worry, I won’t break your precious things. I can see that they’re all very useful but can you tell me the things you came up with? For this one… shouldn’t the bones of an ordinary person already be broken? Why is this one repaired?” Merlin asked curiously, keenly aware of the items that were the most important.

As she said, an ordinary person would have long broken their bones but Kailar with the knowledge of the modern world, he of course knew the process of how the bone repairs itself through time.

“You don’t need to know much about my business.” Kailar said and gently wiggled the rope in his hand. A bell on the rooftop rung, signaling that he was ready for Leyton to bring him down.

Kailar sat on the huge basket and slowly made its way down.

Standing in the treehouse for a while, a smile suddenly curved her lips. “Kailar Ettorek… right? Heh, an interesting little boy. This alertness, this resourcefulness, this wit, this calm, this brevity… amazing! Amazing! If the child becomes a knight, he’ll cause much chaos. If the child seeks power, the world will be his for the taking! Interesting! I want to see where this little monster can turn into!”

……

On the way back.

“Leyton…” Kailar called out, somewhat unhappy.

“What’s wrong?” Leyton asked, lowering his head. The horse he rode was two meters high whereas the young lord’s horse was only one meter short. Leyton naturally needed to look down.

“Do you know magic?”

“No. I don’t believe in astrologers.” Leyton quickly replied. “Just that…” He heisted for a while. “Just that there is this magician who is not an astrologer assisting King Uther.”

“What?” Kailar’s eyes lit up.

“It should be Merlin…?”

Merlin had caused a deep whirlpool of a storm in his heart but even more for the man named Uther Pendragon, King of Camelot!

Though Uther Pendragon may not have been famous in history, his son, King Arthur was a legend amongst legend!
