LD - 2. Elixir (5)

Ever since Han Seo Jin refused the professor’s request, the professor would frequently contact him. The constant phone calls began to feel like harassment, and every ring demonstrated his stubbornness to persuade Han Seo Jin. Growing tired of the calls, Han Seo Jin had to change his phone number.

Fortunately, the professor did not visit his house again, possibly feeling that doing so would cause more harm than good. If he had come, then the worse case scenario would occur. This would’ve prompted Han Seo Jin to move out of his house.

“How can a hospital affiliated professor be so persistent?” He grumbled to himself, when he suddenly laughed. “Maybe he is tenacious because he’s a tenured professor at the hospital?”

He flopped onto his bed and vacantly observed the Elixir.

About 500cc was left within the container. Considering the amount he had invested into the product, it should be worth approximately 1 billion won. But how could 500cc of the Elixir be worth only 1 billion won? All the current medical technology in the market are unable to fully treat cancer in only a few days.

If the conglomerates of the pharmaceutical industry knew about its potency, how would they respond? Wouldn’t they offer millions of dollars to purchase the recipe?

“Uh… But would they really buy it?”

Suddenly, a news report on tax evasion appeared on TV. This decreased his confidence in the possibility of them buying it. If it concerns money, would big companies, who typically conduct shady deals, actually purchase the Elixir in proper means? Wouldn’t they use other methods to acquire what they want?

“... uh. Somehow selling the Elixir sounds frightening to do.”

Thoughts of selling the Elixir to conglomerates had floated around his mind before, but now they vanished as if they were melting snow. Every human craves for a wealthy life and good health. If those conglomerates purchased the Elixir through the proper means, then all was well. But if they did it through grey or illegal methods, then he might be put in danger. All the wealth in the world was not worth his life.

“It is also hard to describe to others about the Elixir.”

Meeting the CEOs of conglomerates was difficult enough, now to convince them of the Elixir’s efficacy?

“And even if they do believe in my words, there are more hurdles to pass. Would they stop after one use?”

After they realize the Elixir’s potency, wouldn’t they try to monopolize the product and attempt to discover it’s hidden aspects? Such as using his blood and how to produce the Elixir.

“Hm, maybe I’ve seen too many dramatic movies.”

Due to all the negative thoughts, Han Seo Jin couldn’t help but shake his head.

Part of the recipe was already known to others, but he did not have to worry about it being leaked to the companies. The complete formula was given by the power of Insight. In addition to the three compounds that are known to others, the mixture must include your blood. A container of only the three chemical compounds was useless. His blood must be added as a catalyst for it to be called the Elixir.

“If it becomes known that my blood is the catalyst…”

At that moment, he lay on the bed, shellshocked.

He may get captured and used as a blood bank to produce the Elixir. To neither live nor die, forever trapped in a standstill and used like an animal. Will such a tragic scenario really play out in reality?

“Maybe I’ll need to move out in a while,” Han Seo Jin decided.

If one did not have the power to hide away a treasure, then it would only bring them disasters. And he knew that he did not have the capability to prevent such a bad scenario from occurring, if the secret was leaked out.

He worried more about being used as a blood bank, then about losing the formula.

‘Anyway, it is the catalyst…’ Han Seo Jin thought intently.

The catalyst of the Elixir was the blood of the king. Since his blood had served as the catalyst, what did this indicate?

“Could it be that I am a king?”

Perhaps he was a really distant descendant of a Middle Eastern royal family’s main line.  He could only imagine these ridiculous possibilities.

A king. Could it be the reason for his newfound power of Insight?

‘It can’t be, I need to think a bit more…’ Han Seo Jin pondered.

The power of Insight, no such ability was present among the mundane people. If one day this type of mysterious power was given to an ordinary individual, then it is possible that the blood of a royal extraterrestrial flowed within their veins?

“Oh, stop! Stop it! My imagination is getting stranger and stranger. Okay, I need to stop thinking of such ridiculous ideas.”

Han Seo Jin lightly slapped his cheeks, driving away the odd delusions from his thoughts.

“By the way, I wonder how much money I have left?”

In his bank account, only 150 million won remained in his balance.

Prior to his diagnosis, this sum would’ve seemed more than enough to survive. But, just a few days ago this balance held almost 1.7 billion won. To go from 1.7 billion to 150 million won, the latter seemed to be too little.

“Will it be too hard to redeem another lottery ticket?”

Han Seo Jin glanced at the nearby stacks of tickets.

In a short span of time, he had won 500 million and 2 billion won. If he redeemed another big winner, then he would seem suspicious to others. This was the reason why he could only hide away his wins and not redeem them straight away.

“One more time… Yes, this will be the last time.”

Online, Han Seo Jin read articles of a foreigner having won the lottery three consecutive times in a different country. With this news, he decided to redeem his winners once more.

“I don’t have any other methods, I only know of two methods on how to use Insight.”

Insight.

Depending on how he used it, the possible outcomes were endless. But, the only safe method he knew was winning lottery tickets. Currently he was powerless, so he couldn’t afford to mass produce the Elixirs or sell its formula.

After much consideration, he decided to redeem a ticket worth 80 million won. If he won 500 million won, 2 billion won, and multiple 100 million+ won winners in a short span of 1 month, then he would be held with suspicion of cheating. This would be the last time, but it couldn’t be something too outrageous.

In the end, he received 62.4 million won in winnings after taxes. Using his earnings, he bought a new apartment.

“This is an excellent location and the facility is very nice. You made a great purchase, sir.”

After paying for the apartment in one purchase, the ecstatic real estate broker congratulated Han Seo Jin on his new flat.

Although the apartment was not enormous, he was proud of being able to buy his very first house. Unlike his previous studio, the new location had excellent security. Here, the building’s owner had employed a neighborhood patrol and a security guard for the area.

“What should I do now?”

Approximately 5,000 won [1] remained in his account. Although he was disheartened about the low amount, he couldn’t do anything to improve it. Thus, he could only put those thoughts to the side for now.

“Should I study?”

Han Seo Jin bought some study aids and attempted to study from them, but he only grew confused. He was not talented in studying, and all the scholastic material he knew was hazy. It had been four years since he graduated from high school and he hadn’t touched a book since then.

“... All I do remember learning was how to steal.”

As a result, Han Seo Jin decided to return to the industry of working at the production line. Of course, this would not be a permanent decision. He did not intend on working as a factory worker forever. Instead, he only wanted to temporarily work there until he discovered other methods of using Insight. Since he had lived in poor conditions before, he was confident that he could continue being frugal until then.

Instead of his previous employment, Jinsung Electronics, he decided to work at their competitor, H semiconductor factory. After much thought, he knew that he could not return to Jinsung Electronics and must appear dead in their eyes. The company has records that he was inflicted with end-stage cancer and would die soon. If he went back, then he would have to explain how he miraculously recovered. Plus, the Human Resource manager’s arrogant eyes lingered in his memories. He did not want to return to a place with filth like that man.

At H semiconductor factory, he diligently worked three shifts a day.

Although everything seemed to be the same as before, his attitude towards life has changed completely. It was the same simple task of washing toxic chemical substances while being endorned in personal protective clothing, but he was happy. Unlike before where he would be miserable and in despair about his upcoming death, he was now content in being able to live and work everyday.

‘What else can I do with Insight?’ he pondered while working.

‘It is difficult to earn through the lottery right now, and the power does not seem to work in betting on horse racing…. I can’t see the future, and creating another product like the Elixir is too tough… Oh what else can it do?’

He knew how to initiate the power, but how could he use it on something less conspicuous? Something that would allow him to appear that he is succeeding slowly, not immediate like multiple lottery winnings.

Suddenly, he was hit.

“Hm?”

He glanced at the robotic arm that had struck him. This initiated Insight to display information about the arm. He learned from the power, that the arm …

[Overheated due to excessive operation. There are flammable chemicals present nearby. A fire may erupt.]

At that moment, sparks spewed from the robotic arm and its whole body was engulfed in flames. This triggered the automatic fire alarm, causing the sprinklers to release water throughout the building.

Under the pouring sprinklers, Han Seo Jin clenched his fist tightly in excitement.

‘This is it.’
