This night the sky was clear. I've waited until midnight expecting to experience the boulder/moonlight ray phenomenon again. The nature did not fail to meet my expectation as it happened that night as well. I saw the boulder being illuminated by this ray of moonlight and animals converging into the area again.
I stood up from my shelter and joined the animals in the area. Sitting down about 10 metres away from the boulder I stared at it and at the ray of moonlight when my thoughts drifted away to some distance place. I was calm for some reason and focused only on that boulder and ray of moonlight.
Suddenly I could feel like my consciousness is also drifting away. At first I tried to resist it but after a while I decided to let it go. Then it happened, before me I saw a vision of a fairy dancing happily on the boulder. I was shocked, shocked so much I snapped out of this dream like vision. When I looked around, the animals were still there staring at the boulder. I thought
'Maybe I'm just tired?'
So I decided to stare at the boulder one more time. Again after a while the same sensation enveloped my body and I again saw a fairy dancing on the boulder. I wasn't as much shocked as before and the vision didn't break this time, so I continued to watch the fairy while forgetting everything else.
I knew nothing about dance or fairies. But when I saw this dance of a fairy I was in a state I can't describe. It was like being carefree, happy and at peace. When I finally woke up I noticed all the animals receding back into the forest and the ray of moonlight that shined onto the boulder was no more. I tried getting up and could feel my body being very heavy, it was like I was working non stop for couple of days.
When I finally managed to get myself back to my shelter, I instantly feel asleep. When I woke up the following day it was not morning but afternoon. I felt immense hunger and because I had no meat, I had to eat the berries until I was full.
I then thought about the last night. The fairy dancing on a boulder, my thoughts and consciousness drifting away and the whole situation with today's morning. Even when I was dead tired I would still wake up in the morning hours, it was weird for me to stay asleep for so long. I went to the boulder to examine it again but still found nothing unusual.
Then an idea formed in my mind. What if I stand on the boulder before the ray of moonlight shines on it. There would be no animals to stare swords at me at that time, also I could just wait for the ray of moonlight to descend and find out what is so special about it.
With my plan formed I decided to go and hunt something because as a human being I needed meat not just berries. With my throwing skills improving everyday, it didn't take long to hunt another rabbit. After my dinner, I practiced my throwing skills again, awaiting the night time to test out my plan.
My accuracy increased again and I was able to hit a tree two out of three times but I noticed that the higher percentage of accuracy I wanted to achieve the harder and longer it got. I guess no one becomes a master after a day or two.
When the night time came, I executed my plan of staying on the boulder. I sat down and awaited the moonlight. As expected, it appeared at similar time to that of yesterday but the moment it appeared and shined onto my body I could feel like I was dying. Like my life was being taken away from me. It was no longer a pleasant feeling of being carefree or happy, no. It was like a human being awaiting his death and breathing his last breaths.
I tried to move, to get away from the boulder but my body grew so heavy I was barely keeping myself conscious. After couple of minutes of trying I fainted.
I woke up the next day or rather I assume it was the next day. This time it was morning. When I woke up, I was happy at the thought that I'm still alive! Yet I could feel very weak. When I tried to prop myself up I noticed my hand being really shrivelled. I got startled by that discovery and check my arm, then another arm, then both legs and finally I touched my face.
"WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS!"
I screamed at the top of my lungs. I was shrivelled and dry like a walking zombie. I was like a dried corpse waking up from its long slumber. I was terrified, what type of thing happened to me? Did this ray of moonlight suck away my life? Will I stay like this forever? And many more questions were running through my mind.
When I finally calmed down, I tried to get off from the boulder. When I moved everything hurt me, like doing exercises for a whole day and the next day you have cramps all over your body. Suddenly my desire to eat something went through the scale. I was so hungry I could even eat grass.
When I finally managed to get myself off the boulder, I furiously looked for berries. I knew grass was not ideal type of food for me so the closest to the food I had in the immediate area were berries.
I started eating berries. I ate, then ate more, then more and more until I ate about two buckets worth of berries. I was surprised myself, how was it possible to eat two buckets of any food even berries? Somehow I managed that and the hunger got satisfied a bit. I could still feel the pain all over my body but it was lesser now.
When I laid down on the grass I started to organise my thoughts. First. The idea of standing on a boulder while waiting for the moonlight was stupid. Second. I need to leave this place. This area is cursed! I no longer had any interest with that boulder or that ray of moonlight.
I've rested for an hour or two and could feel the hunger kicking in again, so I ate more berries then went to rest again. After another round of eating and resting I managed to recover enough strength to move normally. I was still too tired to run but it was improvement nevertheless. I also noticed that the shrivelled skin started to come back to normal, which I was happy about. Who wouldn't scream "Kyaaa! It's a mummy!" when they saw me in that state.
I prepared to stay one more night to rest properly but this time I would just go to sleep and never go near the boulder and that moonlight again.
