"Hello, Miss. Liz, how have you been? I hope you haven't forgotten about me! I was in New York, so I thought I would give you a call."
After waking up the next day to a phone call from an unknown number, Liz groggily heard these words before the face of a kind old man appeared in her mind.
"Mr. Mayor! Of course not! How have you been? You're in New York? That's great, I was going to ask you to come anyway! You're actually right on time! Are you ready to reunite with your daughter?"
"That's what I wanted to hear! Of course, I am! I didn't want to rush you, but I just needed to know that it's still on your mind. Not that I doubted you, or my ability to judge someone, of course. Now, I'm glad that I called. How is Mr. Will?"
"Oh, he's great. And yes, it is still on my mind, Mr. Mayor. I need to go now and get ready for work, but I'll be giving you a call later in the day. Good morning, by the way!"
"HAHA, great! I knew you wouldn't let me down! I'll be waiting for that call!"
Saying so and chuckling to himself, the Mayor hung up the call.
Hearing the dead tone on the other end of the line, Liz lazily got out of the bed.
However, as she looked at herself in the mirror nearby, she unconsciously raised a finger to touch the spot where she had been kissed last night.
'IT WAS A KISS ON THE CHEEK! LIKE HE USED TO PUT WHEN YOU WERE KIDS! GET OVER IT, STOP OBSESSING SO MUCH!'
As she heard this inner voice scream at her, she shook her head and got up before going to get ready.
Still, while she was brushing her teeth and bathing, she kept thinking back to that moment.
Luke was her best friend! In fact, they were even closer than siblings.
But what had the kiss meant? Was he just reminiscing about old times?
He did have a point, but why did he need to kiss her?
'Can you stop saying 'kiss' so many times as if it's so important? Even high school girls kiss on the lips, you're acting like a baby!'
'Why don't I kiss him back, because his intentions were sweet? Just like when we were kids, of course.'
'WHAT?!'
The thought had come out of nowhere, but it stuck in her mind.
However, shaking her head again, she stopped the internal debate.
She really loved Luke, and the way he had acted with the intention of saving her from more harm left a mark on her heart.
Still, the feelings associated with him were mostly brotherly, but she was conflicted right now.
Through those conflicting thoughts, an image popped up which made her inner voice scream once again.
'WHOA, WHOA, WHOA! WAY TO JUMP THE GUN!"
An image of her kissing the CEO on the cheek, instead of Luke.
This time, though, she agreed with the voice, so she just forgot the image, attributing it to her mind which was still groggy.
Hey, illogical things appeared all the time in her mind.
Going down, she was slightly disappointed to see that Luke wasn't there.
Seeing her expression, Mary said, "He had some work at the diner. Liz, we need to-"
"Later, mum. I'll be late for work. And you-don't break the toy."
Grabbing a piece of toast and kissing Derek, who was fiddling with the drone, on his forehead, Liz made her way out where Rao was waiting for her.
After getting to the office, she was surprised to hear that although the initial schedule had her with the CEO all day, he had been pulled into an emergency meeting for some reason.
So, she had the day to herself, which was actually perfect as she could solve the Mayor's problem.
Sitting down at her desk, she first recapped everything.
The Mayor had a granddaughter who had become estranged after the deaths of her parents. She had been raised by the Mayor, but she had left him the first chance she had gotten and then hadn't bothered to maintain contact.
Taking out her phone, she dialed a number and said, "Good morning, Miss. Betty. Yes, your interview has been fixed at the headquarters in the city. Be here by 2:00 pm. Please make sure to bring your ID, and your resume should definitely contain all the information about your extracurricular activities too. It would also really help if you can write something about why you deserve this job. We both know you are underqualified, but we would still like to consider you for the job. See you soon."
Hanging up, Liz sighed sadly.
It was going to be a day of tears.
