Lunch break is a precious time. The combination of the long break, the transition between morning and afternoon, and the turn of the day makes it a particularly distracting time in the school day. And right now, I was just feeling the chime ringing and my mind wandering.

“Ninomiya, don’t you look tired?”

I don’t know if I leaked out a sigh or not, but the person in front of me, Uchiyama Fumiya-kun, looked at me with worry.

Since I entered the school, Uchiyama-kun’s seat was in front of mine, so we often talked. His chubby, round body and calm expression seemed to exude kindness. His tone of voice is soft and agreeable.

He might just be the friendliest person in the school.

“Well, a lot happened.”

There are two reasons why I’m tired. Both are related to yesterday’s events.

The first is yesterday’s incident itself. It’s been a while since I’ve been involved in such a trouble, and although I wasn’t injured, I was exhausted both physically and mentally.

The other reason was because they found out that I knew Sayuri and Erika. For a short time, most of the class saw me talking to Sayuri, and I was perceived as a good friend or even an acquaintance. As for Erika, she had talked to the class a few times, but yesterday she seemed to have the same perception as Sayuri, as if she felt personal.

It wasn’t a mistake, so that part was fine, but the problem was after that. When my classmates and other classmates found out about it, they came to me to ask about it. Maybe the girls were just curious, but the boys were obviously trying to get to know me indirectly. I just told them that we went to the same elementary and junior high school and tried to ignore the rest. These questions and answers are mentally exhausting.

“What are you going to do for lunch today?”

“I don’t have a bento so I’ll be buying bread today.”

Basically, I ask my mother to make my lunch, but sometimes she is busy, so I buy bread from the store and eat it.

The bread would sell out early, so I said “I’ll be going” and left for the canteen.

I was a little late, but I was able to buy the bread I wanted, so that was good. On the way back to the classroom, I bought a drink from a vending machine on the way, which is my routine on days when I don’t have lunch.

There is only one vending machine in the corridor, and it looks lonely, but I like its atmosphere.

“Hmmm, I wonder what I’ll have today?”

As I was struggling in front of the vending machine, I heard some loud laughter coming from the end of the corridor. I looked in the direction of the voice and saw three boys walking towards me. One of them looked familiar to me.

I think it was Keisuke Hayashi from the same class? He’s one of the rowdier ones in the class, isn’t he?

I tried to trace my vague memory of him, but I never talked to him, and he didn’t seem to have much to do with me, so I didn’t pay attention to him.

Since it’s bread,I think I’ll have tea or café au lait.

“Oi, you over there… what was your name again?”

No, I’m starting to crave some soda.

“Oi, I’m talking to you.”

I’m also a bit interested in new products.

“Don’t ignore me! I’m talking about you!”

I was grabbed by the shoulder and forced to turn around. There were three people there, and the person who grabbed me by the shoulders was Hayashi Keisuke.

“I’ve been calling you for a while now. Why are you ignoring me?”

I did hear a voice behind me, but I didn’t think it was directed at me. He hadn’t called me a name, and I hadn’t had anything to do with him before.

“Sorry, didn’t think it was implied to me.”

That was a little ironic, wasn’t it?

“Even after I’ve come all this way to talk to a plain guy like you.”

If that’s the case, then I don’t need to be approached.

“So, what’s it for?”

“Yeah, you’re good friends with Shiraishi-san, right? You should introduce her to me. I’ve been eyeing her since I entered the school.”

This again… And isn’t this too direct?

It’s true that we went to elementary and middle school together, but I don’t think I can introduce you. She doesn’t seem to like that kind of thing either.

I don’t like it, it’s true. This kind of thing happened a lot in junior high school, and I tried to introduce them to Sayuri and Erika a few times. But each time, they were in a bad mood and for some reason, I was the one who got upset.

It’s true that they don’t like it. This kind of thing happened a lot in junior high school, and I tried to introduce them to Sayuri and Erika a few times. But each time, they were in a bad mood and for some reason, they were angry with me.

In the opinion of the person in question, he should not use other people to get close to her. Besides, if they had Kouki and Rikiya around them, the guys attracted to them will decrease.

“If you want to get to know each other, I suggest you talk to them directly, not through me.”

“What are you trying to do? Is that it? Are you desperately trying to protect your position as Shiraishi-san’s friend? That’s impossible. You and Shiraishi-san don’t match up. You should know your place better.”

“Don’t be stingy. Introduce us.””She’ll have more fun with Keisuke.” the two guys beside him are also covering for him.

No, you should tell Sayuri that, not me…

After what happened yesterday, I am once again aware that I am friends with Sayuri and the others. I’m still struggling with the distance between us, but I don’t want to break the relationship anymore. I don’t want to do anything that my friends wouldn’t like.

“I’m sorry, I just can’t do it. Even if I forcefully introduce you, she might not like it.”

I tried convincing them that it would be counterproductive to make me introduce them, and tell them indirectly to just approach her directly and not go through me.

“Che. S**t, there’s no helping it, huh?”

It seems you understand.
“Then don’t worry about Shiraishi-san. You should introduce me to Mayumi! She’s just as beautiful as Shiraishi-san, isn’t she? I’ve had my eye on her since I saw her in class.”

They didn’t understand at all. Also, aren’t they taking it too lightly?

I was getting more and more annoyed when I realized that my precious lunch break was being cut short by this waste of time. It was when I let out a sigh of exasperation, wondering if I would have to explain the same thing again.

“I heard you say my name. What can I do for you?”

Erica walked in with her arms crossed, looking as dignified as ever.

“Ma-Mayumi-san!”

The three of them were impatient at her sudden appearance.

“I-it’s quite rare to see you at a place like this. Did you go to the store?”

“Yeah, I felt like having bread today. Keeping that aside, what was it you were talking about earlier?”

“Well…” Keisuke was at a loss for an answer. It’s no wonder. He couldn’t say he was asking me to introduce him to Mayumi in front of the person herself. I’m sure he wouldn’t have the courage to ask me to introduce her.

And on top of that, if word got out that Keisuke had a not-so-nice attitude towards Sayuri or Erika, he would get disliked.

If he had such an attitude with someone like Erika, he would get the enmity of the entire class.

Keisuke keeps glancing at me. Oh man, there’s no helping him.

“Ah, you mean that. We certainly got along. Especially me and Etsuji.”

“Yes, yes!” said Keisuke. He looks relieved.

Aree? Was it like that?

“I was going to have lunch with you again today. Let’s go, we don’t have much time. Now, if you’ll excuse me.”

The next thing I know, I’m being pulled by the arm and walking away.

I feel like my schedule is being set up on its own these days…
