Chapter 72

Early in the morning, after tidying herself up, Mio left my room. I, however, chose to stay down on the bed.

I slapped my face lightly twice to try and dismiss what happened yesterday and started to ponder about what our parents told us.

"Ah... This is one hell of a family..."

Even though I said those words before, I still have to say them again. I mean, seriously, who the hell adopted a daughter just so that she could become her brother's bride! And more importantly, what if the adopted daughter doesn't get along well with the brother? What are they going to do then?!?!

Washing my face in the sink, I tried to dispel whatever was in my mind and took a shower.

God... How am I supposed to explain all this to Hanako...

************

Meanwhile, in a certain corner of a park...

"Thank you for meeting me this early in the morning, Hanako Onee-chan."

"I do not feel the least troubled, Mio. Let's get straight to business, what have you called me for, Mio? I don't believe that it's something simple, is it?"

While Hanako was keeping a tough facade, Mio put on a devilish grin and got straight to the point.

"It's simple, Hanako Onee-chan. Give up on my brother."

Rage apparent in her eyes, Hanako looked at Mio intimidatingly.

"He~ That's not a very good joke, Mio. Try another one."

"That was not a joke, Hanako Onee-chan. GIVE-UP-ON-MY-BROTHER."

Lightning seemed to spark in the air. The atmosphere tensed up all of a sudden. All the bystanders in the area immediately fled out of their instinct.

"Mio-chan, out of my connection with your brother, I will give you only one chance to explain what you just said. Understand? One chance."

"Fufufu... I don't believe that you will be able to maintain that connection for much longer, Hanako O-Baa-san."

After she mockingly teased Hanako, she pulled out a voice recorder from her skirt pocket.

"Hanako Onee-chan. After you hear this, you will probably change your mind about my brother anyway. Let me warn you, give up right now is still an option."

"No f***ing way, brat!"

Still maintaining her smile, Mio pressed the play button on the voice recorder.

What was played was the recording of what Yuuji's parents said last night. As the recording went on longer and longer, Hanako's face began to pale at a noticeable speed. By the end of the recording, her face was already extremely pale white.

"That is it, Hanako Onee-chan. If you decided to change your mind now, I would definitely not blame you for it. Since I know that this decision could not be made immediately and requires a lot of thinking, I shall come back on another day. Good day, Hanako Onee-chan!"

"..."

Mio turned her back on Hanako and walked away slowly with grace as if she had just won a battle.

Just before leaving Hanako's line of sight, Mio turned back towards her and said,

"Oh, and Hanako Onee-chan."

"What is it...", contrary to the beginning of the conversation, her eyes were now hollow and lifeless.

"I've received a lot of 'love' from Nii-sama last night. We're equal now, Hanako Onee-chan."

With that, she finally left. The initially tranquil atmosphere suddenly turned into a depressing one as soon as she left.

"Yuuji... What should I do..."

Speaking to no one in particular, her voice trailed off in the morning breeze...
