Chapter 1 Part 1

Hello again everyone. I’m sure you’re curious about what goes on in this volume, but since I have to take it easy on the eyes, I’ll be going at a much more lax pace compared to the last volume.

With that said, you could consider it as me still being a on a break, but I managed to get this done during down times of work and watching TI9. I’ll try not to take too long on the latter parts of chapter 1, but I can’t make any promises as of now.

Also, I’m sure some of you may be curious as to what the stuff on colored illustrations actually say, but since I have neither the skill or time to actually clean, redraw and typeset that, I just leave it as is (so if anyone wants to help out with that, do let me know).

Anyway, that’s all for now as I want to get back to watching. I hope you enjoy this short first part of chapter 1.

Chapter 1

My Homeland

TL note: Reference to the Homeland Chunsoft RPG.

Part 1

Translation: Yamaking

There are cases where the entire world around you would fade into gray when you find something that’s present in your everyday, missing.

It’s like when you forget a single type of item that you normally use when grinding. Just that alone would make the grind even more tedious.

Or like when you lend out a piece of armor that you thought you didn’t need. You find out later that you actually need it.

The value of things we find to be naturally there can only be realized once we lose them.

It’s only when we experience that bleak sensation that we find out what we had lost.

Humans are, as such, foolish creatures.

Staple, natural, normal— we take them for granted by saying words like that and cease to think about it.

I finally realized that now.

However, by the time I realized, it was already too late. I mean, this happens after you losing something after all.

“Ah— food,  oh food, where art thou food?”

“Today’s a really bad day. I’m seriously hungry right now.”

“P.E. first thing in the morning— That felt like a punch to the gut…”

It was lunch break. The guys had their lunches spread out across the desks that they lazily put together.

It was during this usual everyday routine that I discovered another one of the truths in life.

When I turned my eyes to my own desk, I found that unlike the other students, I had nothing there.

Even at the sight of this miserable reality, I feel like this moment may or may not be something valuable. Nah, it really isn’t.

“Ah, so the world was this beautiful…”

“What the heck are you saying?”

“So Nishimura has finally lost it huh?”

“Isn’t he just normally like this?”

“Aren’t you guys being a bit too mean?”

Having my classmates look at me weird just because I’ve discovered one of the truths of the world is something I can’t accept.

I just can’t, so that’s that.

“…So Nishimura, where’s your lunch?”

Takasaki asked me that as he looked at my empty desk. To that, I honestly answered,

“None.”

“…Nothing?”

“There’s nothing at all.”

“…I, I see.”

My lunch does not exist. There’s nothing here at all.

I may look like I’m alright, but I’m crying on the inside.

I couldn’t imagine that having no lunch would be this excruciating. I got too used to the idea that lunch was simply a natural thing to have for everyday.

It may have been naive of me to think that I’ll be fine with my fullness being empty as long as my HP still hasn’t hit zero.

“But recently you’ve just been going to the school store right? Why do you say you don’t have any lunch?”

“If you forgot your money then Sensei would probably lend you some.”

“That’s not it at all though…”

Ako’s lunch has about a 33% drop rate that’s why I’ve been recently going to the school store instead.

At the very least, I save up some of my slightly increased lunch money and give to them to Ako later as my share for the ingredients she uses for lunch.

…Though I don’t really like that she makes a face like that of a wife taking her husband’s salary when she does it.

But that aside, I’m normally not starved for lunch like this.

“Don’t tell me you had a fight with that wife who brings you lunch? Hey, is it a spat?”

“Why do you look so happy asking that? You got it wrong.”

It’s not something as scary as having a quarrel with Ako.

The feeling of being hated is scary sure, but I’m more terrified about the idea of Ako waiting for me at my home with knife in hand.

I wouldn’t say she would go that far, but I don’t really want to be at odds with her either.

“Ru—si—a—n!”

Ah, speak of the devil.

As the door loudly flung open, I could hear a familiar voice resounding across the room.

With her long black hair peeking out from the door, I could see her round eyes through the gap in her bangs looking straight at me.

Though I already know that behind those long bangs is a face quite surprisingly cute— I suppose it’s because this girl here is my wife that I find her favorable.

“Ah, so it’s you Ako…”

“…I brought you lunch.”

Ako said that while she wore a gloomy look on her face, contrary to the unusually energetic expression that she had.

In her hand was a large aluminum bento box.

“Oh? So your wife dropped by after all.”

“‘There’s nothing at all!’ my ass.”

“…Do you think you can still say that after this?”

“…?”

I ignored my classmates who had a look of confusion on their faces and went to receive the bento box from Ako.

It’s pretty light contrary to its large size. Ah, it’s just as I expected.

“I’m opening it alright?”

“…Okay.”

As we both exchanged looks of extreme misery, I opened the bento box.

Inside the large bento box was a medium-sized bento box.

“…O, oh?”

“What the heck is that?”

The guys were all puzzled.

Without saying anything, I continued the opening of the other box.

When I did, I found another smaller bento box inside.

“Is that a Matryoshka doll or something?”

“The heck is that?”

“You know, that thing, from Russia.”

There’s a bento box inside of a bento box. I was opening these boxes like some sort of a magician.

And then, when I opened another smaller bento box, I found a single small piece of riceball inside.

“I’m sorry. I could only make a single riceball with what was left in the rice cooker… Other than that, there was nothing…”

“It’s alright. It’s fine, Ako. Thank you.”

I firmly grasped Ako’s hand as tears began overflowing from her eyes.

“Let’s split this riceball between the two of us and eat okay?”

“Uuu… I wonder if we can endlessly multiply this riceball by accepting and abandoning a quest over and over again…”

“Stop that. You’ll get banned.”

Even if you manually do that sort of thing, that’s still an easy way to get banned so don’t even think of doing that.

TL note: This is a reference to quests in some MMOs that give you items upon accepting it. Some people use bots or macros to do this process, thus why the ‘manually’ part is also stated there.

“I guess you’re right… I’m sorry Rusian. I couldn’t prepare you a proper lunch…”

“I’m sorry as well. It’s all because of my inability to provide.”

“Not at all! Didn’t we make a vow that we would go through all things, in sickness and in health and for richer or for poorer?”

“No we didn’t.”

“Eeeh?!”

We all did that in the game, not in real life.

“…Just what are you two supposed to be?”

“Is this some kind of impoverished couple play?”

“What do you mean ‘play’? You’re quite rude you know.”

We have nothing to be ashamed about. We really are an impoverished couple. Though we’re not married in the real life.

“Well, we two have a lot of stuff going on.”

I tried throwing them off with a vague answer like that as I averted my gaze.

When I did that, I could see a similar development playing out in the girls’ side as well.

“Akane, what about your lunch?”

“It’s this.”

“I don’t really know what you mean by that…”

Segawa said that with a straight face as she placed a PET bottle filled with water in front of her.

All the girls around her were giving her a questionable look.

Our Schwein-sama sure is in high spirits even at times like these.

“What’s the matter Akane? Are you not having lunch?”

“That’s right. I’m on a diet you see.”

“‘Diet’ you say… Just which part of you even needs that?”

Akiyama-san had a slightly troubled look on her face as she looked at Segawa who already had quite the slim figure— rather, she was very petite.

However, Segawa had a completely serious look on her face as she replied,

“Even though I may look like this, I’m still pretty flabby at the belly you see. So I have to lose a bit more fat there.”

“…Akane, were you the type to fuss over about stuff like that?”

She stuck her two slender arms out trying to prove a point. Though if this is what you’d call flabby, then just how fat do you think the other girls are?

In the first place, Segawa isn’t someone who has shown interest in being popular or not anyway. She’s not one to try and act all cute like that.

Naturally, Segawa was being showered with suspicious gazes but then she blurted out,

“I have a lot of stuff going on you know.”

She just lazily wrapped that up like I did. Are you me?

“…Hmmm.”

Akiyama-san looked like she was mumbling something as she nodded her head. For some reason, she turned her gaze towards here.

What is it that you need? It’s scary so please don’t stare at me like that. In addition, could you please also not laugh like that?

Anyway, Segawa is also doing her best. I have to work hard as well.

Today’s club activity is an important strategy meeting. I’d like to be able to endure until then.

As I looked up on the wall clock, the time being displayed showed that is was only a little past noon.

It’s still a ways to go before the end of school.
