Chapter 2

Part 6

Translation: Yamaking

The next day, Segawa had her part-time job just like she said and she didn’t come to club at all.

Even if we went to club, we couldn’t play with Schwein.

Even after we got home, we still couldn’t play with Schwein.

And since Schwein wasn’t there, Sette-san didn’t come either.

Ako: It’s so lonely it hurts!

Rusian: It’s so lonely it hurts!

Apricot: I simply cannot find the motivation to do anything in this situation.

After just a few days, we all lost our drive to play.

I mean, while we’re out here grinding, she’s out there working at her job.

Even when she’s done with her part-time job, she still couldn’t log-in.

Despite that, having only the three of us be the ones able to farm up gold is unfair, isn’t it?

It’s because we’re all rivals here that this kind of situation is no fun at all.

Ako: But with Schew-chan out of the picture, now’s our chance right? We have to do our best and farm up gold.

Rusian: Are you really that much of a fiend?

This girl is prepared to throw away everything else for the sake of ‘Our Home’ so just count her out of what I just said.

Apricot: You both are in the same year as her so it’s fine, but I myself do not have any chances to meet her in school. I would be fine with either real life or online, I simply want to see her.

Rusian: I miss you.

Ako: I miss you.

Apricot: …so much that I tremble.

TL note: This is a reference to Nishino Kana’s single Aitakute Aitakute which won song of the year based on download counts (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zchk1tVQpcU)

Then, after some time had passed, Master spoke in chat again.

Apricot: Thus, this is quite the quandary. If Schwein isn’t here, then everything we have talked about before will be all for naught. That’s what bothers me.

Rusian: So what you’re trying to say is that you find it hard having to deal with us by yourself huh?

Ako: I don’t think that’s how it is at all, right?

Rusian: You really think so?

Apricot: If that’s what you guys want to think, then sure it is. At least in your imagination, that is.

For what it’s worth, Master played along with our little joke, but it’s still very depressing after all.

Schwein didn’t log in even once today.

She probably won’t log in tomorrow as well.

Even the day after that, she might still not be there.

As we thought about that— we knew there was only this choice left.

“Welcome! Come on… tch… in—”

As soon as we stepped into this net cafe located in Maegasaki, the employee who had a trainee badge on glared at us.

What’s up with this shop? Their employees have no manners at all.

“That twin-tailed employee just clicked her tongue while she was welcoming us in.”

“She glared at us too!”

“This is more preferable than just lazing around. Isn’t this just fine?”

I guess this sight really is better for these two who have been traumatized by menial labor.

“Well then, seats for three people please. And make those for gaming PCs that are seated right next to each other.”

“…Don’t go making an annoying request.”

She just grumbled about something right there! This employee really has a bad attitude!

“You could at least talk to us politely.”

“…Dearest customer, may I inquire if you have a member’s card? If you don’t have one then could you please kindly get out of the shop?”

Why are you making us leave? You can just make one for us on the spot if we don’t have it no?

Actually, I have one of those you see. It’s right here.

“Here you go.”

Segawa clearly had a look of disdain on her face when she received the cards that we handed over to her.

“Why do you all have one?”

“And why would you think that we wouldn’t have a membership card for the nearest net cafe around?”

If you stack the net cafe bonuses during an EXP bonus event, you can do your leveling in one go. Your way of thinking is too naive.

TL note: Some internet cafes have partnerships with online games where you could get temporary bonus for those games while you’re playing there. There are a wide range of possible bonuses, but the most common one is usually bonus EXP.

“Haa… how long would you be staying for?”

“We’ll have the three hour course please.”

“Understood. Well then, I’ve prepared the three seats from #38 to #40 for your use.”

I guess she finally came to terms with the situation as she went back to serving us like normal customers. She then guided us to our seats.

Segawa did all of that flawlessly, much like her usual style, but I still didn’t quite expect this.

“Here are your seats.”

“Indeed.”

“Okaaay.”

Master took the seat on the right and Ako took the one on the left.

Err what? Why am I the one in the middle? Not that I mind it at all but, isn’t this strange?

“…Actually, why are you guys even here?”

I guess it’s because there wasn’t anyone close by, but Segawa immediately went back to acting like her usual self.

Why are we here you ask? That’s because you…

“Why else of course, we have come to cheer up the lonesome Schwein who is all by herself.”

“We came to cheer you on!”

“You’re being a nuisance, N-U-I-S-A-N-C-E!”

But of course right?

That’s what I thought.

Having someone you know drop by at your workplace is quite the difficult situation after all.

And considering the fact that we all dropped out after a single day of work, there’s no doubt that Segawa, who continued on working, would find our presence here annoying.

I understood that. But you see…

“It really is lonely without you around, Segawa.”

“……Now see here…”

Segawa had a complex look on her face as she looked over all of us. A short while after, she showed us a smile with a slightly exasperated look.

“Well, just make sure you keep it down and don’t cause more trouble for me.”

Segawa said that as she turned and went back, the frills on her skirt fluttering in the process.

“That really went by without problems, didn’t it?”

“It seems that we had no need to worry about how Schwein was doing after all.”

“Schew-chan always does things properly after all right?”

And with that, we’ve done what we came here for so there wasn’t really anything left to do.

Instead of killing time in the club room, we went to this internet cafe. Originally, we would be playing the game right about now— ah, that’s right.

“Alright, let’s go play and go home afterwards.”

“Right!”

There’s an EXP bonus for playing here after all, so I figured we should have fun grinding too once in a while.

“Isn’t it fine to give the market flipping a rest for a day, Master? Let’s go somewhere with the three of us today.”

“With a DPS, Tank, and Healer, our party is quite balanced.”

“Uhm, I want to get something to help with farming Sleeper-sensei. So I’d like that thing that gives the Earth Element to armors.”

“Earth Property Elemental Enhancement huh? Where did that drop from again?”

“It’s from Molrat Desert. The level of difficult there is quite high, and you can get quite decent experience from it. That’s fine.”

TL note: This is a reference to Ragnarok Online’s Sograt Desert. Incidentally, this is also where Sandman is located and the Sandman Card is also the reference to the enhancement that gives armors Earth Property.

Our destination is set. It’s been quite some time since we’ve gone grinding as a group that I’m really pumped up for it!

“A’right. Ako, gear up and let’s go.”

“Yes. I’ll pretty myself up and head on over right away!”

“That’s not what I meant by gear up! Weren’t you the one who wanted to get gear to help with the Sleeper-sensei farming as well?!”

“Uuu, but the Healer Rod’s design is just…”

“If you use better gear then that would make all of this much easier. Do you understand that?”

“But I just want to wear my cutest outfit in front of Rusian after all!”

“I love the Ako who comes with her strongest gear more and I find that more lovely you know?”

“Don’t think you can get away with everything just because you keep saying the words ‘love’ and ‘lovely’!”

I really love how Ako, who despite saying all that, still brings out her strongest gear while grinning from ear to ear.

“So I guess Master is going in her usual maxed out gear?”

“Indeed. The enemy is of the Earth Property after all. My Meteor shall rain fire on them today.”

It’s really been a while since everyone has gone grinding together in a party that they were both excited about this.

Though I’m not really one to say that, since I went ahead and purchased potions that I didn’t normally use as well.

“…Excuse me.”

And then right behind us, Segawa passed by carrying an empty glass in her hands.

I felt that she was intensely staring at our screens when she passed by, but let’s just pretend I didn’t notice that.

“Then let’s get a move on. Ako, since you’ll probably get lost along the way, make sure to come with me.”

“There you go again Rusian, it’s not like I’ll still get lost in Molrat this time—”

“That’s what you said last time when you DID get lost.”

The story behind Molrat Desert is that there are mole rats digging up holes in the sand. Once you mistakenly fall into one of them, you’ll end up getting completely lost. This is why leaving Ako by herself is plain dangerous.

TL note: The actual word for Molrat Desert was actually read as Mograt Desert. The backstory is also the same except Mogura is also the Japanese for mole. I went with Molrat here to keep the pun and maintain some of the RO flavor it had. Also, Sograt Desert did also have holes in it, but those are made by many other creatures in Ragnarok (moles, ants, hodes, and I suppose the MVPs Phreeoni and Maya).

“Uumu. The monitors here are smaller than the ones in the club room. It was already hard enough having only a single monitor during club activities, but this may be too much.”

“You’re saying that a gaming PC’s monitor in a net cafe is still too small for you? This is why bourgeois like you are…”

“However, I’ve heard that the actual bourgeois are those who have their own designated booth in net cafes where they just hole up in.”

“Rather than a bourgeois, isn’t that just being a plain junkie? They’re something like a net cafe refugee after all.”

“I was wondering about that before, but net cafe refugees are more of a noble than they are a refugee, right? Being able to stay in a net cafe 24/7 is living da dream!”

“Those people only go to the net cafe in order to sleep! They still go to work during the day! Don’t go thinking that they’re the same as you! And actually Ako, wrong way! You’re going the wrong way!”

TL note: Net cafe refugees are those people who use net cafes as a place to sleep as mentioned above by renting out private booths. Since net cafes like these also allow you to order food, it’s pretty much a cheap inn (thus the term refugee).

“Huh? But Master is over here though?”

“This is the shorter route to the dungeon, however it’s packed to the brim with aggressive monsters. Are you fine with that Ako-kun?”

“No waaaaaaaay!”

“I’ll head over there too so let’s just defeat them as we go.”

Can’t be helped, can’t be helped. It’s not like those mobs are a huge deal anyway.

“……Passing through, please excuse me.”

As we were talking about those things, Segawa passed through behind us again.

She was carrying a plate with food on it. I wonder if she was carrying it into one of those private booths. Well, good luck with that.

“I’ve got the mobs all rounded up. How’s that cast going?”

“It’s been a while since we last played together that my timing would be a bit off, please adjust.”

“OK. ED has a long ACD so just focus on heals Ako.”

“In Japanese please?”

“We’ve both been talking in a way you could already understand!”

“…RanRan …Passing through again, please excuse me—”

It seems like she’s done with that delivery, but this is the third time she’s passed through behind us.

I think I heard her blurt out RanRan a bit there but… Does she want to go on a rampage here?

“I’ve grouped them up together. Come Meteor! Come forth Meteor!”

“Mu, this is taking longer to cast than I had imagined. Is this really alright?”

“It’s because you’re not buffed right? Ako, do your job properly as a support.”

“Please wait, this manga is just getting to the good part!”

“Don’t go reading manga while we’re grinding! The game! Look at the game! Don’t just go relaxing while you’re on auto-follow!”

You’re the healer here! If you don’t properly pay attention then that title is just going to be for show!

“I need healing! I need healing!”

“Please wait! At least let me finish this volume!”

“Couldn’t you just cut it short to ‘until the conclusion of the current story’?!”

“It’s a 4-panel slice of life manga so the current story won’t ever reach a conclusion until I finish reading at least a stack of volumes you know?”

“Then you can just stop at the end of the four panels, can’t you?!”

I’m running out of healing items! Heal! Hurry with up with the heals!

“…Excuse me but do you have trash that needs to be disposed of?”

“Whoooa?!”

Segawa’s face suddenly appeared from behind me as she asked that.

Whew, that surprised me. Garbage collection huh? Well I don’t really mind, it’s not like I have any.

“I’m all right over here so just do your best with your work.”

“…Okay. Please excuse me then.”

Segawa looked dejected as she left with cleaning tools in hand. Her work seems quite tough.

“…Fufu.”

“Come on Ako, stop messing around with that manga and come heal me!”

“I have a proposition. For now, let’s just kill Ako-kun and leave her there.”

“Kuh, since we’re a party of three, if I agree to Master’s suggestion then it’s going to be final.”

“I exercise veto power!”

“At least take your eyes off the manga while you’re saying that!”

“Fine! Then I’ll go ahead and cast Meteor centered at me!”

“Err, Master? Are you really fine with firing it off there? Because if you do, I think Ako, the one standing between the two of us, will end up taking most of the aggro you know? Is that what you were aiming for?”

“Hah! I sense murderous intent! Run away!”

“So you start moving the moment you feel like you’re about to be on the receiving end of the death penalty huh?!”

“Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh darn iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!”

Whoa! What’s happening?!

I heard Segawa’s voice from behind me. And it was such a loud cry this time that I couldn’t help but turn my head around.

When I did, I saw the figure of Ms. Schwein, both eyes overflowing with tears.

And what’s more, she even ripped off her trainee badge!

“This is impossible! I can’t take this anymore!”

“What’s the matter?! This isn’t that bad right? You were doing your job so well!”

“That’s not what I meant! All I’ve done lately is saving up money that I’m sick and tired of it! And yet here you guys are having fun without me! It’s unfair! I want to play too!”

“Schew-chan, your job…”

“Is your work going to be alright?”

“It’s not alright at all, but I don’t want this anymore! I quit! I actually should be playing LA in the club room around this time but because of my part-time job I can’t! And even when I get home, I still have no PC!”

Because we went and visited Segawa, her desire to play the game has finally reached its limit.

What have we done? It got so lonely since Schwein wasn’t around that we thought of checking how she’s doing, but this is how it all turned out.

“J, just what is she planning to do?”

“What is she going to do?”

“What you ask? What else of course?”

Segawa had a firm look in her eyes as she declared,

“I’m going to play the game!”
