Meanwhile, as Kang Nianxi was on the phone, Wang Tingting sat awkwardly in the room with Kang Mu And Mo Ruyi. The quiet was so complete that, for a second, the woman wondered if she had gone deaf, but when she concentrated, she heard the subtle sounds of people eating and utensils clinking.

This was enough to help Wang Tingting calm down.

Looking at Kang Mu and Mo Ruyi, Wang Tingting was glad they were at least somewhat nice to her but deep down she knew that they hadn't recognized her yet.

Wang Tingting, like Kang Nianxi, was born with an average brain and capacity to learn. But due to her family and school situations, the girl pushed herself to learn as much as she could.

This made her much smarter than the man but no matter how smart she was she knew that it wouldn't replace the status she didn't have.

In her mind, this was why the Kang's hasn't accepted her yet...

But little did she know that status had nothing to do with being recognized within the Kang family. They were already at the top of the food chain, there were a little number of unions that would be beneficial to them. Rather, it was based almost entirely by Elder Kang's whims.

If Wang Tingting knew of what was happening in Kang Jun's house, the girl would puke out blood...

As she sat in utter silence, Wang Tingting began to feel her body stiffen. She wished Kang Nianxi would hurry and come back.

Thankfully for her, It didn't take long for Kang Nianxi to come back. As he did, Wang Tingting immediately noticed the spring in his step. Once he was by her side he took her arm and pulled her up.

"Excuse Tingting And me, we have important business to attend to." Kang Nianxi said.

With that, they both walked right out of the house as he pulled on Wang Tingting's arm. He wasn't pulling hard but she still felt the place where he was holding burn.

Once in the car, Wang Tingting turned to the man and asked curiously, "What's going on? Where are we going?"

Seeing the smile on the man's youthful face, Wang Tingting could only assume that something amazing had happened.

At first, Kang Nianxi basked in his happiness, without answering Wang Tingting's questions, but then, when they stopped at a traffic light, the man turned to Wang Tingting and said,

"We're heading to sis Lan's place. She's going to help me become family head!"

Hearing such a thing caused Wang Tingting to be speechless.

Kang Nianxi has spoken to Qiao Lan for help?

The thought of this made Wang Tingting's heart sink.

Sometimes she wondered if the boy was stupid or if women themselves were just far too calculating.

Anyone with intelligence would see that Qiao Lan was not the type of person to help another person out. She was self-centered and self-important. Wang Tingting understood this well because she herself demonstrated those qualities.

Wang Tingting didn't trust Qiao Lan, but even so, she acted chummy with her because she didn't want to get on the Qiao Lan's bad side.

With Kang Nianxi's current state, Wang Tingting knew that whatever would happen from now on would have grave consequences the man, and maybe even for herself but since she knew her words wouldn't reach Kang Nianxi, she now had to readjust her approach when it came to secretly helping him.

Now, instead of acting towards the goal, she had to concentrate on damage reduction.

Peering at her husband, Wang Tingting's heart ached, but deep beneath that ache, was a fire, one which made her want to destroy Qiao Lan.

Sadly for her she couldn't do it, because she knew that this would backfire on her and also hurt Kang Nianxi's hopes of ever succeeding as the true heir of the Kang's.

Wang Tingting didn't want to rip his dreams away from him. Even if the girl sensed a disaster, she wouldn't say a thing. She would just follow him into it. This was because she couldn't bear to see him hurt, but in the end, Mo Ruyi might have been right...

Kang Nianxi was hopeless.

***

At Kang Jun's home, the mood had lightened completely. Lu AnLing and Elder Kang had engaged in all kinds of conversation. The more the two talked, the more they liked one another.

Lu AnLing was a tomboy in her childhood and her father had been the type to allow her to be free to speak her mind. As a child, Lu AnLing had found this refreshing and to her happy surprise, Elder Kang had the exact same mentality as her father.

Lu AnLing was able to speak and act without restraint, and despite restraining herself a slight bit, she still took this opportunity to ask a lot of questions, mostly regarding the situation within the Kang family.

"Our family is slightly complicated…" Elder Kang began.

As she understood, since Elder Kang's generation, the Kang's had only had boys. Elder Kang found this to be a shame because he had always wanted daughters. However, that's not what caused the most problems.

"As Kang Jun has probably told you, successorship is like a battle in our family and since we have some… less than… ugh… legal, connections, the person who will succeeds me must work hard so that no one believes they can… ugh..."

"Do a coup d'etat?" Lu AnLing asked. As she listened to Elder Kang speak, her eyes glistened. Everything the man was saying sounded like a movie.

"Exactly!" Elder Kang laughed at her answer.

"Your French is exquisite…" Elder Kang began to say but then, remembering that in her file it said that she had spent her time in a Recover Institution in France, the man stopped his sentence there. "Uh… so, one must rule with an iron fist while in power."

Lu AnLing nodded. "If you show any kind of softness people will take it as weakness…"

Elder Kang nodded. He was going to speak but then, Lu AnLing opened her mouth once more.

An air of coldness and darkness surrounded her.

"Sometimes it's not bad acting weak though, because,…" Suddenly, she looked away, "you can use this as a way to attract all the flies to you and crush them all in one swift blow…"

She said those words as if she was quoting from a book.

"And least that's what my father used to tell me."

'What type of man was your father?' Elder Kang wanted to ask, but instead, he said, "That's an interesting method."

The old man was glad that the darker aspects of the Kang family didn't repulse Lu AnLing. As Kang Jun's wife, she would most likely need to deal with these things if anything ever happened to the man.

At first, Elder Kang just thought Lu AnLing to be a normal girl, but rather than normal, Lu AnLing was strange. It was not her herself, but her reactions that were not normal for a young socialite.

Elder Kang knew she had grown up in the countryside, but he wondered how her life had been there…

Thinking about her unknown past, Elder Kang couldn't help think of his own past. Thinking about it made his heart squeeze slightly.

"Actually, I could have used that advice when I was young…" Elder Kang muttered. He wasn't speaking to Lu AnLing but the words came out anyway.

To this, Lu AnLing turned to him with curiosity. Seeing her big fox-like eyes stare his way, Elder Kang had nowhere to run. He had to speak,

"When I was young I… urm… I made a mistake. I hurt someone I loved and for that, I got cursed…"

Lu AnLing's face twisted. "The person you loved cursed you?"

Hearing her question, Elder Kang laughed dryly and said. "It was a long time ago, but that person cursed me with eternal unhappiness… Thinking back, I deserved it."

Lu AnLing felt bad for Elder Kang but she didn't know how to comfort him so she passed him some water and said, "Drink,"

Elder Kang laughed and then he took a sip of his drink.

Suddenly, Lu AnLing asked, "D-do curses actually come true?"

The elder laughed again. "It depends… Sometimes they do."

Suddenly the feeling of shame washed over Lu AnLing and she began to remember the day her father had died; the words she had said to him and the words he had said back to her.

In her mind, clearly, she heard her younger self scream, "I hate you! You're so damn negative. Talking to you makes me so depressed. You're ruining my life, I wish I didn't have to live with you, anymore!"

To this, her father retorted, "Move out if you want. I mean it, try. As long as I'm alive I'll keep trying to talk some sense in to you, like a voice in your head. But if you keep acting like a stupid brat, I'm sure you'll never be happy."

It didn't end there. Hateful word after hateful word the two exchanged until, suddenly, the words just stopped. Everything went dark, and then when she woke up, her father had already died.

Sometimes a person didn't need to say the words 'I curse you' to inflict ill will onto another…

Feeling the pain flood into her heart, Lu AnLing blinked and then changed the subject.

"What do you like to eat grandpa? When I come back we should meet again. I'll make you something delicious."

"I'll like anything you make me," the old man said as he laughed. He had laughed a lot today so his voice was beginning to become horse. "You like cooking? Is there anything else you like doing?"

Cheekily, Lu AnLing said, "I like anything," After Elder Kang had laughed about this, Lu AnLing decided to answer seriously, "I like cooking, reading, playing instruments and singing. I also like the idea of exercising, but I never end up doing it."

The elder nodded vigorously, "I don't like exercising either, though your husband likes doing it. I never understood that."

Lu AnLing raised her eyebrows and then she looked at Kang Jun. During their nightly activities, Lu AnLing had noticed that the man was very built, though she had just assumed that he was naturally perfect...

She was wrong. Now she wondered if she could ever watch the man exercise. The thought made a fire ignite within Lu AnLing's belly. She wanted him right then and there, but she had to control herself.

While Lu AnLing and the elder had spoken, Kang Jun had been taking care of the kids. He wasn't very used to doing this kind of thing, though. After a small while, he found out that he didn't mind this set up at all. He actually quite enjoyed it.

The children were a bit rowdy but if he couldn't handle their rowdiness it would have hurt his pride.

When Lu AnLing turned her eyes to him, Kang Jun was letting the kids play keep away with him. As they threw around the ball trying to get it away from Kang Jun, the man pretended as if they were succeeding.

The scene was heartwarming. So much so that it left Lu AnLing speechless. As she gazed at the man lovingly, her heart warmed considerably.

For a long time, she had never thought that she would see such a perfectly adorable scene. Feeling her gaze on him, Kang Jun turned around and looked at the woman straight in the eyes.

Unconsciously, they smiled
