Surgeon Elise vol 1 ch 9

The unfair bet part 3

Diabetes mellitus.
In Korean that means diabetes.
The Emperor's illness was definitely diabetes.

'He hasn't been receiving treatment, so his blood sugar must have kept rising and he eventually got Acidosis when his blood level
hit 1000.'

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or more simply known as diabetic coma!
Even in the modern era, it was a serious emergency situation. If he had received emergency care he could have lived, but it would
be difficult with the Empire's current medical knowledge.

'It is impossible to completely cure him of diabetes but if he gets proper treatment, we can stop him from falling into a coma. But
how do I bring this up?'

She hesitated for a moment. If she was on modern day earth, she could end this by simply suggesting that it was a good idea to
take a health exam.

'There is some knowledge of diabetes and how to treat it, but it is not widely known. Also, would he even believe me when I'm not
even a doctor?'

That was the biggest problem here. The fact whether he would simply believe her in the first place when she wasn't even a doctor!
It was at that exact moment the Emperor asked her in a peculiar tone.

"Why did you ask about that?"

"It is because..."

"Just say it comfortably."

She was forced to speak, so she carefully chose her words.

'I don't know how he will accept this but...'

It wasn't like she could just stand back and watch the Emperor's illness get worse in time.
Especially when she knew that with some treatment it could make a big difference in his worsening condition.

"Recently, at the library, I read a book about a disease with similar symptoms to yours."

"Hmmm, are you saying that a lady like you has been studying at the medical library?"

The Emperor made a surprised face.
The medical library books were different from the public library. It contained such difficult technical terms that it was undecipherable
without basic knowledge in the field yet she was able to read that?

"Yes, your majesty."

"Well, what did the medical books say?"

"I don't recall exactly what it had said, but I remember that when the blood sugar is high, it causes similar symptoms to what your
majesty is experiencing."

"Blood sugar? You mean as in literal sugar?"

"Yes, sugar is a necessary nutrient we need in our body, but due to many reasons,
if it is too high in our blood, a person will get similar symptoms to you, your majesty."

"Hmm..."

The Emperor stroked his chin. It didn't seem like he believed her words right away. For starters, it wasn't well known that there was
such a thing as blood sugar (blood glucose level), and there also was the fact that even the royal physicians couldn't figure out the
Emperor's disease. How could a simple girl figure out something this difficult on her own?

"I will go speak with Baron Ven about this afterward."

The Emperor said this only because she didn't look like she was making up an unknown disease.

"Yes, thank you, your majesty."

Elise nodded her head. Baron Ven was the palace physician.

'The royal doctor, Sir Ven, is an excellent doctor. He can figure out that it's diabetes with this much clues.'

It was just that it was such a recent discovery that Sir Ven didn't think to connect it with diabetes. However, he was a giant in his
medical field in the Empire so there's no way he doesn't know about blood glucose level, as such he should be able to figure out
that it's diabetes with this much hints.

'He needs to say that the medical result is diabetes and then change the majesty's current living habits. Even with this, we can
avoid the worst outcome.'

This is what she had decided after thinking it over. However, there was one thing she forgot to add to her calculations; the issue of
how much attention she could draw to herself with these actions.

"However, today you have surprised me multiple times.
I am so proud of you reading such difficult medical books that your average person can't understand.
So amazing."

"It is excessive praise, your majesty."

"No, it is not true. Today you were simply splendid. It made me feel so proud."

The Emperor looked at her with eyes full of satisfaction.

"Do you know why I called you here?"

".....I don't know."

"I wanted to judge you one more time before I decide to make you the Crown Prince's Queen. In my heart, I had already decided
on you but there was something in the corner of my heart hesitating, but today all my worries are gone. With this, there is nothing
lacking for you to become the Queen. Don't you agree with me, Marquis?"

".....!"

Elise's face paled.

'NO! 'I didn't do any of it for that purpose. In fact, I had come to break the engagement
but I ironically received a 100 percent approval rating from the Emperor.'

The Marquis was unaware of his daughter's inner turmoil and smiled happily.

"Thank you for looking upon her favorably your majesty."

"Fa-Father.."

Elise studied the Emperor's countenance with an anxious face. He was looking at her with eyes filled with affection; as if she was
already his daughter in law.

'How about the Crown Prince?'

She carefully looked at the Prince's face. His face was expressionless as always, just like the past life. As soon as she saw his
blank face, her heart hardened once again. She could not push it any longer. For herself and her family. Even for that Crown
Prince's sake too.

'He will be very angry.'

She opened her lips.

"Your majesty, I actually have something to say."

"What is it? Whatever it is, it is okay to just say it."

The Emperor spoke to her in his usual gentle tone.

"I feel very ashamed to ask this but..."

She said decisively.

With the same feeling she would have when cutting a patient with her scalpel, she spoke clearly.

"I want you to reconsider the marriage between the Crown Prince and I."

The whole area became quiet. Everyone stared at her.

"What are you saying, Elise?"

The Marquis asked in a more wondering way rather than in surprise. It was such an unexpected request that he couldn't
comprehend it.

"Yes, we also don't understand what you mean. What do you mean when you want me to think about the marriage
between you and the Crown Prince?"

"It means exactly what I said. Please cancel our engagement."

"...!"

Everyone froze at her unexpected words.

The Marquis opened his mouth with a trembling voice.

"You- you...! Elise, what unbelievable nonsense are you suddenly saying?"

It was a voice mixed with anger and astonishment. He had every right to be. She was the one begging for this marriage
one-sidely, but now she wanted to cancel it when it got this far! Marriage wasn't child's play! And the other person was the
Crown Prince!

"Wait a minute, Marquis. I want to ask her something. Elise de Clarence, do you realize what you are saying?"

The Emperor spoke.

His voice was gentle as before, but Elise got on her knees and bowed her head as if she had committed a great crime.

"I know what I am saying. Please forgive me, your majesty.
I will accept any punishment you see appropriate for the crime of Lèse-majesté."

"Haha-"

The Emperor laughed a hollow laugh.

"What is the reason? Weren't you the one who desperately wanted this marriage with the Crown Prince.
Did your heart suddenly change?"

Elise shook her head. Of course, her heart had changed towards the Crown Prince but it wasn't because of that simple reason.

"It because I am someone not fit to be Empress."

"Huh?"

She bowed her head even lower and spoke.

"I have been thinking many thoughts recently.
Could a stupid and lacking girl like me possibly be the mother of a nation? I thought and thought about it and the conclusion I
came to is 'no'."

"Ha....."

"Of course it's a great honor to become Empress,
it gives endless glory and happiness to the private person
but the Empress is the first lady of the Empire and must be an honorable person.
If a lacking girl like me became Empress it would no longer be a matter about whether it would fit me or not,
but would rather be a stain upon the honor of our great Empire and is an insult.
If a silly girl like me became Crown Princess and then the Empress, I will fail in my roles
and will not be able to do my duties and become the embarrassment of the Empire."

She took a deep breath after she prattled on and on. She really meant what she said. In the past, she had no right to become
Empress, which led to a series of tragedies. The Empress seat was not right for a person like her, but rather an honorable lady.

'An average life where I do surgery as a normal person fits me.'

She thought that as she kept her head low, barely touching the ground.

"This girl who had dared to dream of something that she shouldn't have dared to look at...
Please punish this foolish girl for the greed of trying to be Empress when she had no right to.
And the crime of tarnishing the dignity of the throne. I will accept any punishment."

Her golden hair flowed flown her head to the ground.

'With this it over. It is done.'

Since she had talked like this surely the Emperor will recall the engagement.

'He will be very angry.'

She waited for the Emperor's anger to fall on her. She was frightened at how angry he could be, but she decided not to avoid it.
No matter how harsh the punishment, she deserved it and it was her burden.

"....."

The garden was dead quiet.

Elise waited like a criminal begging for mercy crouched down on the ground in front of the Emperor's feet.

The Marquis became completely pale and just watched the Emperor's countenance anxiously.

Unfortunately, the other partner in this engagement had nothing to say, but unlike the past, he looked at her with just a slightly
different gaze than before. He had an odd expression on his face.

The Emperor opened his mouth.

"Lady."

"Yes, your majesty."

"Raise your head."

Elise slowly lifted her head.

Then she was shocked at the expression on the Emperor's face.

The Emperor was smiling brightly! He looked at her with a proud expression like a father who finally saw his daughter mature and
become a woman.

"Your... majesty?"
