Chuncao of course didn’t have the gut to disobey Xia Liang. She had to leave before she took quite a few looks at the bag full of fireflies.

After she left, Xia Liang called the hidden guard out, gave him the bag and told him to send the bag to his master immediately.

In fact while Xia Liang was catching fireflies, the guard was watching her and was wondering why she was acting nothing like other ladies did.

And she was catching fireflies.

It turned out that she caught the fireflies for the emperor.

When he took it over, he gave a strange look at Xia Liang and for the first time asked, “no letters?”

“Wait a minute.” Xia Liang jerked to go inside and write down quickly on the paper and then gave it to the guard.

The guard had known how much important Xia Liang was to the emperor. He didn’t waste a second to deliver her letter.

Even if it was late at night, the emperor might have gone to sleep, he still ran toward the palace.

In fact, Baili Jue didn’t went to bed. He stayed up to read the information guards collected for him.

Some of them were about relations of his officials and little-known secrets, including Xia Yuanzheng’s.

Baili Jue was a control freak,. As a young emperor, he was ambitious and aggressive, hoping to expand the territory, run the country very well and eventually be respected as a noble emperor.

Therefore, he founded his own power in the first of his reign. The organization, Dark, searched everywhere for all kinds of intelligence for him so that he could control what happened in the city.

Every emperor would prefer keeping things in balance to having a harmonious court between officials. Making all powers fight against each other was the key to keep the balance.

Besides, no officials could be absolutely righteous and integrity. They probably received bribes to some degrees at all. If it were not a serious bribery, Baili Jue would choose to turn a blind eye to them.

But there was one thing he would never tolerate. No treason was allowed!

Before he met Xia Liang, Baili Jue learned from hidden guards that Xia Yuanzheng was close to Baili Xi and he had hung out with officials that worked for Baili Xi.

It was strange enough to attract Baili Jue’s attention.

That was why he especially took extra attention to Xia Yuanzheng when he was hunting down a spy.

He was also the real owner of Fairy Ferry. Therefore, he could have more information about everything.

If it were not for Xia Liang, Baili Jue wouldn’t pay extra attention to Xia Yuanzheng even though he still kept an eye on him. When he had evidence that Xia Yuanzheng betrayed him, he wouldn’t go easy on him even if Xia Yuanzheng didn’t cause much damage or he was framed up.

He would probably dismiss him at least.

However, just because Xia Liang told him about this and because of his feeling about her, Baili Jue had different thoughts.

If he still wanted Xia Liang to be his concubine, Xia Yuanzheng must be safe and sound. Xia Liang mustn’t be a daughter of a criminal.

Baili Jue started to realize that Xia Liang was already an important factor when he thought of things. He started to make plans for her, and even in a long run.

He wanted her to be with her, not to be his servant, or a concubine that didn’t matter at all.

In his mind, Xia Liang was as important as he was. If she turned out to be just Xia Yuanzheng’s daughter, not a spy from other countries, he would probably make her his wife and the queen of the country.

Baili Jue put down the letters and sneered. He must be crazy. He didn’t trust that woman and even denied her existence somehow.

However only after three days, he even started to consider to marry her as his queen.

What a crazy idea!

Baili Jue stood up and was about to have a bath before he went to bed when Lou Feng, the head of hidden guards, came to report that the guard who was spying on Xia Liang wanted to see him.

Baili Jue missed a heartbeat when he heard this. He was worried that something bad might have happened to Xia Liang. He got upset and yelled anxiously, “get him in!”

The hidden guard hurried to the bedroom and was about to kneel down to salute when Baili Jue shouted at him impatiently, “tell me! What’s going on? Is there anything bad happened to her?”

“Your majesty, Miss Xia is alright. She asked me to give them to you. Therefore, I …” The guard said as he took out the bag and gave it to Baili Jue.

Baili Jue was relieved that Xia Liang was alright. Before he got the chance to get mad at himself, he looked at the bag in the guard’s hand and frowned,

“What’s in it?”

“Fireflies.” The guard answered.

“Fireflies?” Baili Jue raised his voice slightly and sounded surprised.

“Miss Xia caught them in person and she said it is a gift for you. And she also sends a letter to you.” The guard took out a letter and gave it to Baili Jue.

Baili Jue gave it a look at the bag, paused, and took the letter. He hurried to open the letter and read it.

“Master, the fireflies are gifts for you. It is said that it would be beautiful if you put them inside your bed curtain. Hope you like them. Each spot of light represents my love for you. Xia Liang, missing you.”

It was nothing like those poems. There were no strong emotions between those simple words. But it was powerful enough to warm Baili Jue’s heart and race his heartbeat. He couldn’t help but have a smile on his face.

“Off you go.” Baili Jue put the letter into his pocket and took over the bag.

“Yes.” The guard left.

“You did a great job.” Baili Jue added,

“At your service.” The guard stopped and knelt down.

“Mm.” Baili Jue sounded and said, “protect her from any harm.”

“Yes, your majesty!” The hidden guard said and at the same time Xia Liang was more important in his mind, because how the emperor treated her differently.
