Chapter 17: 17

Hi everyone, we are now sixteen chapters in and its time for some author's thought! I will speak a little bit on my experience as I wrote those 16 chapters.

Worry not, if you are not interested a new chapter has been published simultaneously:).

Those 16 chapters have been published in a single week (we are catching up!) but rewriting them took me twice as long as the original chapters. As it turns out, improving stuff is not always so easy ! :).

So today, in this Author's thought chapter, in this I will mostly talk about my experience rewriting the Sun Kingdom. Let's go !

***** *****

As some may know I was indisposed for a few months but during that time I never stopped thinking about the Chris, Mia and all the adorable characters in the novel.

I used the many ideas to work on a rewrite of the story so that everyone can enjoy it even more :).

The first thing I experienced in the rewrite, was how hard it was to change the "beginning."

The early chapters are very important to a story. They set the mood and many of the most important character. Those chapters are like the trunk of a tree and the pillar of support for the world I am building.

So, as many noticed, the first chapters did not change much, actually I couldn't change much or it would be another story. So I spent my entire energy on improving all the characters and their introductions. I even introduced a new one and worked a little on adding some foreshadowing of future troubles, I also moved things around a lot, even old readers may have not noticed that some events that were moved to the early chapters originally only happened 5 or 10 chapters later.

And most importantly I wrote in a reason for people to follow Chris. This is one of the most recurring comment I read in the first draft. "Why are they following him?"

They did have a reason actually, but I should have gone a bit farther.

Right now people currently follow Chris because of the royal garment. Some people think that this is not enough but I believe it should be. The royal garments are just like a crown. It might merely be a symbol as it can be stolen, lost or taken away. But what is important is what that symbol represents.

Here the Royal Garments represent the Goddess' approval and for the weary survivors this means "hope."

Right now those survivors are clutching onto that hope for a better future.

They might be following the clothes for now, but if Chris does a good job, they will soon follow the man!

After working on the characters it was now time to work on the events.

Changing introductions and details of characters is fine and all, but it is not the most noticeable thing.

Events, on the other hand, have a considerable impact on the story and timeline.

This was my next focus as the story was slowly opening up after chapter 12 and my freedom increased.

Rewriting the events was a little easier. I had new ideas I had to implement, and I had things I wanted to change and remove. The toughest part was to keep things logical and avoid inconsistencies between the new stuff and the old stuff I did not change.

For example what if I introduced a character, added some info on his appearance, but I forgot to change a line 10 chapters later that mentioned he was blond while I introduced him as a red head?

This is a simple example, but I am sure you can see how it can be a problem for more important things.

But this was easily fixed.

Rather than doing a shoddy job of just changing bits there and there. I rewrote almost every single word in the novel.

I started with an empty page for all chapters and rewrote it word by word, some events might be the same, but sure are not written in with the same words.

This meant I progressed chronologically, and this meant everything was fresh in my mind, as if I was writing it for the first time (since that was basically what I was doing!).

This made it easier for me to connect the different new events with the old ones and to change anything I wanted.

And now Chris and his companions are about to go to battle. The readers of the old draft might remember that this was in chapter 10 previously. And we are already at chapter 16 in this draft.

And every single chapter is much more packed with content, as they are, in average, two times longer.

This will increase as completly new chapters are introduced and new events and characters appear!

I have some ideas that I can wait to write in. It's actually itching me to keep that stuff a secret for now!

And that's it! My perspective as of chapter 16. I hope you enjoyed it!

A new Qidian week starts today so please remember to live a vote ;).

The planing for this week is still : 2 chapters every day!

Please report us if you find any errors so we can fix it asap!
