Chris was currently playing Hopscotch with Petunia. He was having a slow day and had nothing to do, and Mia apparently knew about it and disappeared. So Chris went to play with Dalahan, but met Petunia there and ended up playing her for the rights to play with Dalahan.

For some reason, she was excellent at the game, and he had already lost the rights to play with Dalahan, his afternoon snacks and he was about to lose much more important things when he was interrupted by one of his bodyguards. "My Lord, Carl is here to make his report."

[Thank god] He thought. "On my way!"

Chris fled the scene amidst the boos of the children that came to watch the duel.

"My Lord." Carl bowed as he saluted Chris.

"Ah, Carl! I am happy to see you back, do you have good news?" Chris had a neutral expression, but his mind was still filled with his defeats as he swore to go back and have his revenge!

"Both good and bad actually." Reported Carl. "The southern mountain chain has plenty of copper and iron ore. I've outlined on the map the areas where mining should be safe for now."

Chris noticed Carl's turn of phrase. "Did you find danger south of here?"

"We found a strangely high amount of undead roaming the forest." He said.

[More undead?] This was the second time Carl reported seeing undead in the area. "What kind this time?"

"Sorry?"

"What kind of undead? Slow zombies? Fast zombies? Vampires? Or a is it a cool lich?"

Carl was startled by Chris' enthusiasm.

"T-they are just skeletons my Lord, like last time. They are really weak, they can even be defeated by y..." Carl was about to say 'even by you' but quickly corrected himself. "Even by a normal civilian."

"Eeh... So what's the problem?" Chris' excitement clearly took a nosedive.

"By themselves, they are nothing special. But in great numbers, they can be very threatening. " Explained Carl. "Their current numbers weren't dangerous by themselves but..."

Carl pulled out the map and continued. "We also found a strange cave from which skeletons walked out. Right there." ( https://www.dropbox.com/s/0qwhpq80qzgiagh/MoltenValley%28chap%2016%29.jpg?dl=0 ).

"And you think there might be a lot more of them inside?" Asked Chris.

"Yes, my Lord. It looks that way, we watched the cave for half an hour and skeletons regularly came out, yet none went in."

"That certainly doesn't sound good." Said Chris. "I am calling a meeting."

Chris turned to his bodyguards. "Call everyone to Mia's tent. Tell them it's an emergency meeting!"

The trip to Mia's tent was swift. In fact, it was right next to Chris'. This was not a coincidence and was the results of Chris hard work. After much effort, he managed to convince Mia that a king should live next to his advisors and immediate subordinates in case of emergency. For some reason, he only used this argument on her and not on Berg and the others who were spread out in the camp.

Still, everyone gathered very fast, after all, Brine City wasn't that big yet. The only one missing was, of course, Titus as he was away planning the ambush.

Mia was the first to ask. "Is something wrong?"

"Let's have our friend brief us on his last mission first." Said Chris.

Carl shared his findings to the group as he did with Chris. Everyone was relieved that they had finally found a source of copper and iron. But the mood turned sour, as expected, with the mention of the undead.

"So what are your thoughts?" Asked Chris.

"I think we should deal with it as soon as possible." Said Cat. "The cave is too close to the camp."

"I agree." Nodded Berg.

"We need to understand what is going on inside that cave. According to Carl, the undead have mana crystals embedded in them..." Said Mia. "In the worst-case scenario, we might have a necromancer in our territory..."

Chris was not from this world, but he did not need it to be explained to know that this was not a good thing.

"Carl, can you confirm that the skeletons were roaming randomly, alone and without a clear goal?" Continued Mia.

"That is certainly what it seemed to me, Miss Mia." Confirmed Carl.

Relief could be seen on Mia's face. "Then we probably avoided the worst case."

She noticed Chris' enquiring look and explained. "Every summoned undead is linked to its summoner by a mana crystal while those occurring naturally have no such crystal. The crystal is used to supply mana and to control that undead. Which is why they don't usually roam alone without any goals. And if one was destroyed, the necromancer would notice and send some more undead to investigate."

"Mana crystals?" This was the first time Chris head of them since he came to this world.

Carl handed him those he found. "These are death mana crystals, my Lord."

"They contain magical energy of their own element. Our magicians use them to power magical trinkets." Explained Mia as Chris inspected the tiny grey crystals in his hands. "These are very smalls ones. They are probably the smallest form the crystals can form into. The necromancer probably found them or if he was particularly talented created them himself. However, the real valuable crystals, those in magical artifacts cannot be crafted, by anyone."

Chris did not know what to do with them yet, but if his experience in RPGs was to be taken as good life experience, they were certainly very valuable.

"If they have a crystal but just seem to wander without any real goal, it is likely that they are no longer linked to their summoner. This is a good thing as it will make them much easier to deal with, but this still doesn't tell us how many of them are inside the cave, and they remain unpredictable."

"Right." Continued Cat. "If they are unlinked, they only react by instincts and will rush at anything that moves. It will only take a wandering wild animal to bring them all out of the cave."

"Hmm..."

This was a tough situation. The chances were low, but rushing in could bring a necromancer's ire upon them.

The tent was silent until someone finally spoke.

"Let's clean it up."

It was, of course, Chris.

Mia looked directly at Chris. "Are you sure? This can have big consequences."

"The way I see it, necromancer or not, we can't ignore it right?" Explained Chris. "In both cases, we are very likely to be attacked. Our only solution is to be decisive and fight on our terms. If we wait, we'll only be caught unprepared."

"And you said the skeletons are the weakest undead, so they are the equivalent of slimes."

"Slimes?" Asked Mia.

"Ah, I mean, they are like beginner stuff, the necromancer that summoned them can't be that strong or he'd have moved on to tougher summons right? It's like, why use Frizz when you learned Kafrizzle right?" [1]

Mia put her hand on her forehead. "I didn't get all of that, but I agree with your point. Our strength isn't likely to get a sudden increase for the next few weeks, and we can be attacked at any time. I have no objection."

"Does anyone have a better option or an objection?" Asked Chris. Everyone shook their heads. "So it's decided. Let's prepare for tomorrow. The sooner the better."

"How many soldiers do we have available?" Asked Chris.

"There are 300 soldiers, 320 hunters, and 80 scouts at our service now that we merged the two camps." Said Berg. "Half the hunters, as well as twenty soldiers, followed Titus. Half the scouts are currently busy as well. The rest is available."

"I would recommend leaving at least one hundred soldiers to defend the camp. We have no defense and are vulnerable to sneak attacks from beasts and bandits." Said Cid.

Cat joined in. "Our lumberjacks have reported attacks from the northern forest. Groups of Gnolls have followed them and attacked. It would be best to send troops until we can clean the forest to avoid unnecessary casualties."

"How about this my Lord." Offered Berg. "We leave one hundred soldiers with Cid, Miss Catherine will lead the remaining scouts and fifty hunters to protect our people in the northern forest, after all, scouts and hunters won't help much in a cave. While I take the remaining 180 soldiers to clear the cave."

"Sound good. Let's leave tomorrow." Decided Chris.

Berg was startled. "Eh? You are coming to my Lord?"

"Of course. It's the undead Bergy! Undead! No way am I going to miss that. And it's not like I will be safer here if there really is a necromancer in that cave and we piss him off, right?" Chris couldn't wait to go and explore.

"I'm coming too." This time even Chris was surprised.

"Eeeh? You too Mia? C-could it be?" He stopped and gulped. "Could it be you don't want to separate from me?"

"Mister Silowas, we might find books and goods inside that cave, if this is or was a necromancer lair. I would like to inventory those right away." Explained Mia, as always she was immune to Chris' antics.

"Very well, Miss Mia." Answered Berg. "Please prepare for tomorrow."

The meeting was over, and everyone had left but Chris and Mia.

He was currently eyeing her bed in the back of the tent. It looked so soft, he wanted to roll on it.

"You were right." Mia's voice brought him back to reality.

He was surprised and didn't know what he was about to take credit for.

"A king should live near his advisers in case of emergencies." She continued.

"R-right, see?"

Mia started preparing a small bag for tomorrow's trip.

"Are you worried about tomorrow?" Chris finally asked. "If you are, don't worry, I'll protect you."

She looked back at him and smiled. "Huhu. Can you even defeat a skeleton?"

"Of course! See this? It's a +5 sword!" Chris took out the wooden sword he crafted and lent to Berg in exchange for his real sword.

"Oh, impressive." Commented Mia with a light smile. "I'll be counting on you then. But for now..." Chris was kicked out of her tent before he could even react. "... Please go back to your tent."

There Chris found Berg and Ferlin, still waiting for him.

"Congratulation my Lord, you managed to stay longer alone in her quarters." Praised Ferlin.

"This is certainly an improvement, my Lord." Continued Berg.
