The moon was shining brightly in the clear sky. (月朗星稀 (Yuè lǎng xīng xī) = It’s idiom describing that it is good weather to enjoy the moon) However, there was still one person who hadn’t returned home in the deep bamboo forest outside the city.

Shadows in the bright moonlight flittered like a ghost in the woods. Dark figure flies across the sky. After a moment, green bamboo leaves float down one after another.

Mo Xie’s breath was somewhat unsteady. He twisted his body to jump down from the tip of the bamboo to land on the ground and returned the sword to its sheath.

After the day that confession’s day, he stayed out for two nights. He wouldn’t return to the courtyard until late at night when he was exhausted.

It wasn’t only just his swordsmanship that became sloppy, but he also couldn’t calm his mind.

Mo Xie exhaled a long sigh. He thought of the scene when Wen Rushi looked up at him with her small face. She would always constantly appear in his mind lately.

Even when he was running, practicing, eating, sleeping, or breathing. He couldn’t wave her away from his mind… Mo Xie never felt so lost.

Every time he thought about it, the scene of that day became clearer and clearer. Now, he could even recall the undisguised expectations in her bright, penetrating eyes, and the fiery red camellia blooming at her moon-white skirt.

He thought it was time for him to go back.

Maybe Miss would encounter something unexpected without his constant protection around her. He tried to control himself from thinking about how lame his excuse was, but he just blew his breath away on the way back.

The lights in Wen Rushi’s room hadn’t been extinguished yet. Through the closed window, one could almost see a black silhouette inside the room.

He couldn’t remember when she started sleeping without pulling up the bolt to lock her window. It’s like a tacit understanding between two people. He often visited at night. She knew it too, but she never said anything about it.

Mo Xie stood outside the window for a long time. He finally raised his hand to pushed open the window and saw Wen Rushi fell asleep on the table while holding onto an unfinished dress.

Mo Xie frowned slightly at her thin clothes. His body leaped into the room as he acted purely on his instinct.

He carefully picked up a robe and draped it over her shoulder. Wen Rushi moved a little, but she wasn’t awakened.

Mo Xie breathed a sigh of relief and slowly sat down on another stool in front of her. The orange light cast a warm glow on her hair. Her hair looked as soft as her delicate voice.

Perhaps only at this time that his mind would be so calm.

Suddenly, Mo Xie didn’t want to leave silently as usual, nor did he want to secretly peer at her through the window. He didn’t think about what he should do. He just sat there looking at her sleeping face quietly for fear that he would disturb her dream.

He didn’t know how much time had passed until Wen Rushi opened her eyes slightly. She seemed to be in a daze and looked a little confused. Wen Rushi just blurted out whatever comes into her head, “What time is it?”

“It’s after midnight now.” Mo Xie glanced out of the dark window and answered softly.

Wen Rushi blinked. It was two or three o’clock in the middle of the night, so she had been sleeping on the table for four hours. No wonder she felt so uncomfortable. She put her hand on her stiff shoulder and neck. She said, “You didn’t carry me to my bed. so, that’s how you want to draw a line with me.”

It’s not once or twice that she slept on the table. But no matter how she tossed and turned in her sleep, she would be in her warm bed when the next morning came.

She sighed softly. It seemed that she made him frightened to the point he dared not touch her.

Mo Xie moved his lips slightly and whispered, “That’s not the case.” He wasn’t a good speaker. He killed more people than he spoke. He really didn’t know how to express his feelings.

Wen Rushi raised her eyebrow and glanced at him. She waited for what’s he going to say next. However, he only lowered his head and kept silent.

After waiting for a long time without hearing anything from him, Wen Rushi stood up in a bad mood. She picked up the robe placed on the table and threw it to him, “Put it on and let me see.”

Mo Xie stared blankly at the robe in his hand, and then he obediently took his robe off and changed into the new one.

Wen Rushi looked Mo Xie over from head to toe. She intended to make this robe look luxurious and low-profile at the same time. She thought about how he had to travel in the night. But she hadn’t expected that this eighteen years old Mo Xie to exude this much imposing manner when he’s wearing this robe. This cloth unexpectedly brought out his prideful and refined appearance.

He always straightened his back whenever he was standing or sitting and he had a slim build like a white poplar. (A white poplar =  native tree in central and southern Europe) His posture contained tremendous strength of tenacity.

Wen Rushi allowed herself a small smile of satisfaction. She kneaded her hands and exclaimed, “Fine feathers make fine birds. I still have a good eye.” The cloth was well-made, and the most important thing was the person who wore it was also well-chosen. She boasted proudly in her heart.

人靠衣装[rén kào yī zhuāng] = beautiful clothes or an eye-catching appearance make a person appear similarly beautiful or impressive or dressing is also very important

“Great material.” Mo Xie touched the smooth satin and frowned.

“It will be comfortable to wear. You don’t like it?” Wen Rushi squinted at him as if she would jump on him and bite him if he dared to say one bad word.

“It’s not like that. It’s just inconvenient when there’s a fight. This robe will be cut recklessly.” Mo Xie didn’t notice her expression but fell into the dilemma of how to deal with the cloth. “You also can’t wash the blood off even if there’s a little amount of it soaking into the robe.”

“I’d rather wear coarse linen.” Mo Xie looked up only to find that Wen Rushi’s face was as black as the bottom of the pot. He stared at her for a while and finally realized that he had completely overlooked the young lady’s painstaking effort. He quickly changed his words, “You can put it there first, and I’ll look for you when I need it.”

Wen Rushi smiled angrily. The clothes were made to wear.

Wait till you need it? When would that be? Didn’t you have to dress well to attend the feast? She was afraid Mo Xie won’t have a chance to wear it and go out in a few years.

“If you don’t like it, just take it off.” Wen Rushi reached out and undressed his belt.

Mo Xie hurriedly stepped back and explained, “I like it very much. I don’t want to.” Only then did he feel sorry for his inability to express his feeling.

He didn’t mean to dislike it at all. It was because he liked it so much that he was reluctant to wear it.

Wen Rushi ignored his explanation. She took his new robe off without hesitation. Mo Xie dared not resist. He could only stand still and let her roll up his robe and throw it on the table.

Wen Rushi turned back to see him standing there with his drooping head. He was just like a big dog who had just been reprimanded. His pitiful appearance made people want to raise their hands and rub his head.

“Fool, I still haven’t finished it yet. It’s just not appropriate for you to try it out today. It will take at least a few days to complete it.” Wen Rushi finally couldn’t help but raise her hand to pinch his cheek.

“Miss!” Mo Xie stared at her angrily. She went too far this time. Not only did she do this, but she also played a trick on him.

Even if it is… The future wife shouldn’t act like this.

“Things you said the day before yesterday shouldn’t be taken for granted. I will answer you in three years!” Mo Xie glanced proudly at her. He turned back and jumped out of the window leaving only his pleasant voice that was still lingered around even after he was outside, “Miss should have an early rest. You will have to go to Marquis Wen’s feast together with Pei Renqing after dawn. Don’t give Pei household a shame just because you have two black circles under your eyes.”

Wen Rushi was surprised. When did this kid become so sharp-tongue? He even learned to laugh at his master. Ah! She would have to stop him from doing this in the future!

Thinking of Mo Xie’s earlier joke made her punched the pillow two times to vent out her anger after she climbed into her bed. She covered herself with the quilt and closed her eyes.

Actually, it’s not bad. This noisy little guard always behaved himself or acted according to the rules. She smiled and fell asleep gradually.

In the next morning, she really did oversleep. Fortunately, Liu Shi came into the house to call her in advance, so she didn’t miss the time.

She yawned and glanced out of the window. That fellow must be laughing secretly at her. He knew clearly that there were many things happening today, but he didn’t wake her up beforehand. He clearly remembered last night’s jokes.

Liu Shi and the maids were quick with their hands and feet and soon pulled up a beautiful hairstyle for her. A small golden jewel is hanging over her forehead. It was really brought out her snow-white skin.

Wen Rushi stood up and walked out slowly. With a big emerald green peony muslin, pink daffodils scattering on green leaves as the pattern on her long skirt and a thin greenish-blue silk draping over her shoulders. The golden jewel on her head sent out a tinkling sound as she took each step. (TL: Sorry, this paragraph’s really a mess.)

Pei Renqing had already waited in the front hall. At the moment when he saw her, he couldn’t help but be amazed.

Unfortunately, a lovely girl like this was a fool.

Pei Renqing maintained his composure and stretched his hands out to her. He guided her towards the carriage outside the door.

Pei Renqing’s movements were gentle, but his words weren’t as gentle as his voice. He looked ahead and whispered in a voice that only she could hear, “You are not allowed to speak when you get there. No matter what others say, you just need to smile.”

Wen Rushi chuckles lightly. Everyone treated her as an ornament. She raised her eyebrows and smirked, “You’re satisfied with just that? Maybe I can do better.”

Pei Renqing looked at her in surprise. “Aren’t you mentally retarded?”

Wen Rushi didn’t reply and asked, “What do you think?”

He began to scrutinize her. Since she wasn’t as foolish as she was, it seemed like she had been pretending to be a retard all this time. Marquis Wen did think of a good plan to win Li Yunwei’s sympathy by disguising his daughter as a fool.

What was her purpose?

“Don’t think too much. My dad doesn’t know. Otherwise, he’ll send me to be someone else’s wife. He won’t give me to you this easily.” The driver was already at the front of the carriage. Wen Rushi pulled back her hand and stepped onto the carriage.

The carriage looked rough on the outside, but the interior layout was very delicate. It’s very in line with Pei Renqing’s character.

There was no one else in the car other than the two of them. He looked at her with a somber expression when he stepped into the carriage, “Now that you’ve been stalling it for so long, why did you tell me now?”

Wen Rushi picked up a purplish red grape and smiled. She looked at him calmly.

“Nothing. I just want to make a deal with you.”
