Chapter 3.1: The Return of the King
In the past, Yun Qing Yan was the successor named to become the next Clan Leader but after he disappeared three years ago, his right to inherit had been automatically lost.
This was the Yun Family Clan’s rule. If the successor were to die or to have suffered an irrecoverable injury, or to go missing for more than one year, they would lose their right as the successor.
His cousin Yun Xuan, had similarly had his position as the successor revoked because he had sustained injuries that he would never recover from.
Yun Qing Yan did not immediately reply but had just looked at the old steward, Yun Yuan Lin, with a penetrating gaze and said: “Grandpa Lin, is this your own idea or is it what my Eldest Uncle wants?”
As a Divine Emperor, he could naturally tell that the old steward’s words were persuading him to take back his position as the successor.
The old steward Yun Yuan Lin was taken aback for a moment. Meeting the eyes of Yun Qing Yan, the old man felt as if he was being closely scrutinized and that all his secrets had been clearly exposed.
Immediately, the old steward then answered: “This is your old servant’s own thought but the Clan Leader has the same intention as well. But the Clan Leader is not entirely certain where the current Young Master Yan is qualified to assume the position of being the successor.”
“Then Grandpa Lin is certain that I am qualified to go fight for it?” Yun Qing Yan then questioned.
“I was initially only half sure. But now, your old servant is fully convinced. Only if Young Master Yan is willing to take back his position as the successor, it will then only be a matter of time.” The old steward bent his back low, his demeanor deferential, his tone of voice earnest.
“Grandpa Lin, you are intelligent, more intelligent than I remember, but….. Let this be the last time!” Yun Qing Yan looked at the old steward to say, and there was no iciness in his eyes, but it made the old steward feel as if there was a cold blade upon his back.
Yun Qing Yan did not suspect the loyalty of the old steward for him or his Eldest Uncle Yun Han. But no superior would ever like to have a subordinate who would act as per their own will.
Especially for a superior like Yun Qing Yan who was so used to dominating over everything.
“Yes Young Master Yan. Your old servant guarantees that I will not commit the same mistake!” The old steward drew a deep breath, an unexplainable sense of fear rising in his heart, and it was not known from when that his forehead was already covered with a sheen of cold sweat.
“Let’s go. Lead me to the Family Clan’s Meeting Hall.” Yun Qing Yan said, already making his way outside. “For Eldest Uncle to be unable to pull himself away from, I would think that it could only possibly be a clan meeting. The four great Elders are all overbearing and brash characters. My Father was able to hold them down with his absolute might over that unruly bunch but Eldest Uncle might not be able to handle them….. Barring anything unexpected, I think that even the Herb Chamber is being controlled by one of the Elders.”
The Yun Family Clan’s manor was enormous and Yun Qing Yan followed the old steward out of the courtyard, where they then walked along a very long walkway that had a lake on each side, the surface filled with lotus blooms and leaves.
Thereafter, they threaded through one pavilion after another, before they came to a grand and imposing looking hall.
It was the Yun Family Clan’s Meeting Hall and there was an intense argument going on inside.
The four great Elders were ganged up together, their voices pushing to corner the Clan Leader Yun Han. The isolated Yun Han on his own, was in a highly disadvantaged position in that argument.
“Clan Leader, ever since Yun Xuan had been crippled, the position of the Family Clan’s successor has been left vacant for an entire half year already! The whole Heaven’s Wing City is now gossiping that there is no one to succeed our Yun Family Clan. For the sake of the clan’s reputation and for the sake of the clan’s continued legacy, we implore the Clan Leader to name a new successor today!”
“And it so happens that my son Yun Yang Qing possesses cultivation at the Star Level’s sixth stage. Regardless whether it’s in terms of cultivation or talent, he is the top among all his age. So I recommend that my son Yun Yang Qing be made the new successor!” The Grand Elder said aggressively.
