Standing outside his home, Leo has an anxious look on his face. He is glad to be back home after his little gathering trip but he is also afraid of his daughter's wrath for leaving without a word.

He stand there for a few more moment before nodding to himself. taking a deep breath, he brace himself before swinging the door open.

"Aight matey, come here and give some love to you- what the hell is going on here?!" it is not accusing looks from his family nor a punch to the face that greets him, it is utter destruction of the once warmly decorated living room.

He is about to step in and call out but stop himself when he noticed a thin, almost invisible wire, sprang about mid-lenght of the doorframe.

Seeing that his brows furrowed as he paid more attention into the room. sure enough, the place are choke full of traps both magically and physically. it is almost like someone tried their best to keep something or someone out.

Waving his hand, an electric pulse discharge from his body into the room. disarming and erasing all present traps.

Leo then walk in with unhurried steps, taking his time as his boots click clack loudly through the area, the dim lightening inside serve to enchants the dark look on his face.

"Someone dare to attack his family while he's away? preposterous! Is it the black skull clan? His daughter store have been gaining popularity with the boy's poison concoction lately after all.

Maybe it's the gremlin's tear guild, he have long history of hostility with them after all.

It could also be the six fingers assassin guild, they has contract to kill him and most likely a grudge when the boy kill their new recruit."

Thinking of all the possible perpetrators only serve to worsen his mood, but he force himself to not lost it just yet as he walks to the room at the end of the side hall, the boy's room.

He could hear faint breathing from the other side and with the slight smell of smokeleaf joint and alcohol, he is almost sure the people behind this are the ones in the other side.

Kicking the door open, he look stunned for a moment before it turn completely enraged. Inside, Val are hanging from the ceiling and wrap in chains so much it looks like cocoon. Meel sprawled on the floor near her, bounded tightly with ropes. While Fiona lean weakly to the wall, rubbing her eyes seemingly just waken up by the disturbance. It is to be noted that they all look worse for wear and their clothing are full of tear and cuts.

He first check on the two girls, other than a few cuts that's already healing they seem to just be unconscious. Next he turn to check his daughter whom is currently glaring at him.

Seeing that look, his fury lessens by a drastic amount as he felt a cold chill down his spine. only then he realized something amiss.

The boy is missing.

"Do you know what you did wrong?" Fiona's voice drifted into his ears, making him stand tall and straight from how chilly her voice is.

"Did you notice somebody's missing?" without waiting for him to respond, she stood up before gracing a left hook to his face.

"Did you know how much if a hassle I went through to keep these two crafty cats from trying to follow him?!

Did you know how it feels having to go all out against them while you had to be careful not to kill them?!"

Leo stood there, taking blow after blow, kick after kick, complain after complain. He didn't say anything and take it all, letting his daughter vent her frustration at him. He know he is at fault, he didn't leave any countermeasure in case something like this happens.

It was an oversight on his part, the kid had always been so obedient he never considered he would go against his words.

It took almost 2 hours of being a sandbag to his sleep deprived daughter before she left for her room. It is coincidentally also when the two girls stir awake.

"Although I should berate you two for listening to adults conversation, I must first address this matter." Leo said, turning to them while fixing his appearance.

"Do the two of you want to follow Vayne?" seeing how their eyes lit up, he lift his hand to stop them from replying. "No, I will not allow the two of you to go." he said, making the two deflate from their excitement before they start having thoughtful look, most likely thinking how to convince him.

"No matter what you say you are still not allowed to go, inside where he is headed the two of you will only be a burden." the girls glare at him when they hear his words, making him sigh inwardly.

"Unless you can survive without sleep then you will only burden him, from my sources I know that the deeper one go the more frequent your encounter with hostile will be and the more variant of creatures there will be. Night will no longer be peaceful enough to rest while the day you are easy picking.

So no matter how strong you are, if you can't go on without sleep then it's better for you to forget it."

Seeing how dejected the girls turn after his words, he couldn't help but soften up.

"Rather than just waiting, how about the two of you train harder? By the time he returns, you can show the fruit of your training and make him proud." he felt proud when the fire rekindle in the girls eyes but when they look at him, he felt like he made a big mistake.

.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..

It's been a few days since we lost three of our party members, no one really talk about it but we all know we let our guard down after days of not detecting hostile entities.

For the following days, the team alchemist had been directing everyone on what to do and what to look out for, sometimes it's almost like he have eyes everywhere as he spot enemies before even me, the ranger, could spot it.

What's even more suspicious is that for an alchemist he is extremely adept at handling both sword and dual wielding daggers, not to mention hand to hand combat and the needle launcher under his gloves.

He doesn't really talk unless he needs to and only communicate with hand gestures or signs. The most annoying about it is how my parents keep on praising him after I challenge him to a hunt battle, depending on what we kill we gain points and we have a limit of 5 hours. We both are limited to bow only, but even then he came back with 42 points ahead of me due to killing big game like the bears. He didn't even use as much bow as me with his arrows finding the vitals that send the most damage against his opponents.

It's irritating how he act like it's all normal when he returns my spare bow and the rest of his arrows and quiver. I would feel at least a bit better if he just gloat about his victory like a normal person.

But no, all he does is make potions with the materials he have at hand, experiment with mutated roots, herbs, and berries we found, or just play with his pet.

With him experimenting with many things we found out that the wolves aren't all filled with those tentacles creature he call feaster, according to him the creature are some kind of parasite that move from host to host while reproducing by corrupting and mating with an organisms reproductive cells such as a male wolf sperm or a female wolf egg cell.

From what he observe it seems the parasite reproductive cells are both male and female at the same time and able to mate with any available host reproductive cells with incubation period only a few hours before hatching.

Although his research make us aware of many things, I couldn't help but find his intentions suspicious. He never ask for anything in return for his help in fights not does he seek gratitude whenever he treats our wounds. Normal person would at least accept the freaking gratitude.

He also seem to think my father is the leader of the team but if I am honest, everyone sees him as the leader.

He position our team with him as the scout, Roland at the front, me, mother, Jack, and Jill at the center, and father at out rear.

The position he take is supposed to be mine as the ranger, but he moves far more quietly than me, he moves almost as quiet as a cat yet powerful at the same time.

... I'll be honest, I'm not suspicious of him, I'm envious of him. He could do so many things yet he never seem to be satisfied and wanted more skills to learn, that trait is evidence especially when he ask my father to teach him paladin skills.

It's not even helping with the fact that he saved me today from having a spider bite my head off even when he is fighting several on his own.

"Why the long face?" ask an annoying voice beside me.

"Nothing" I told him as he sit down on the dirt. "What di you want?"

"Nothing really, just thought it's a nice full moon today." he said as he look up, into the canopy of black leaves. It was never clear whether it's day or night here, it doesn't change how dark the forest is. But knowing this, that is the lamest excuse someone can make.

"Why are you doing this?"

"Do what?"

"Helping us, from what I see you could easily survive this without us. So why are you helping us?"

"Hm... No reason really, I just can't let people I know dies I guess. really tho, there's nothing special or anything to be envious of there, I just do whatever I want."

"That doesn't make any sense."

"It doesn't indeed, but that's the point. It doesn't have to make sense, as long as you want to do it then just do it. Life's too short to do things we'll regret."

Saying that, he got up and left "Well, I'll be heading back to the others, don't stay out too late."

After he is gone, I sat there thinking of what that alchemist said. "Do what I want huh.."
