Willow swung her sword again, cutting the monster in two. Wiping blood off her face, she hurried over to where Rick was fighting three at once. An arrow whizzed by her ear, but she ignored it by this time. Hayden was too good to miss.

They had been fighting the giant rats for hours and they were all beyond exhausted. The end was hopefully near, as they had finally managed to get back to the double doors. The hope was that they could barricade it somehow, long enough to rest.

After a few more well-timed hits, Rick was free to rush back towards the door with her, where Hayden was keeping the vast majority of the rats at bay. Their best saving grace, was that the rats paused in attacking them, to eat their dead.

As they dodged through the doors, Rick jammed a metal bar he had grabbed somewhere, through the door handles.

"That won't hold them for long," Willow gasped softly.

"We'll grab some heavy furniture," Hayden said, heading off with Rick close on his heels.

Before too long, they had several heavy desks blocking the doors, and some heavy chain Hayden had found, wrapped around the door handles.

"It's a good thing they've had us training so hard," said Hayden, sitting down on the edge of one of the desks.

At the sound of his voice, scratching started on the other side of the door. The three of them looked at it for a moment, then hurried further down the hall. Ducking into one of the rooms that Willow had just opened, they looked around. It looked like a nursery for sick children, full of medical equipment.

"Did you guys see what I saw?" asked Rick, his voice almost trembling.

Willow looked over at him, but wasn't sure what to say, so she merely nodded.

Tears slipped out of his eyes and he looked up at the ceiling above them.

When they had gone through the door, there had been more hall, except it branched in two different directions. They had followed it for a while, then came upon an open area that looked like it had led to a lower level, but was completely flooded. The remains of bodies had been floating in the water. The stairs that went up had been dismantled, and the remainder of the room was filled with trash and refuse.

They hadn't had time to stand and gawk, as the moment they arrived, the giant rats had swarmed out of the huge nest. They scrambled over each other, with huge gnashing teeth, and long sharp claws. Naked tails dragged behind them, giving a meaty thud whenever they hit the floor. It had taken every ounce of training they had received to fight off the initial swarm.

Now that they had a moment to rest, Rick was able to think back on what he had seen. His father's face had been half eaten, but there was no mistaking it.

"We have to kill them all. If even one gets past us, there's no telling how many people it can kill. We also left the door open to the outside, so if they slip out, they'll be able to get to the compound."

Willow nodded at Hayden's words. She wanted to comfort Rick, but she was not good at it. If she said anything, it would probably come out sarcastically, and that was not what she was wanting at the moment. This gnawed at her, because he had spent so much time comforting her whenever she had a hard time. There should be something she could do? Finally, she rested her hand on his shoulder. It wasn't much, but he smiled at her, to let her know he appreciated it.

It didn't take him long after that, to stop crying. Standing up and wiping his eyes, he headed back towards the door.

"We can rest for a few minutes," she said, surprised.

"I can't stay in a room where they experimented on little kids."

Looking around, she realized her surroundings, and followed him out. He was standing in the hall, gazing at the barricade.

"Hayden's right. We can't let those things get out of here."

"I'm running low on arrows, we need to think of something." Hayden paused next to them.

"My dad's body was naked. Someone dumped him down here, which means that is where they dump all the dead bodies. And because they haven't overrun the compound yet, means they can't jump very high."

"Maybe it's because of their size?" wondered Willow. Rats were normally really good at jumping.

"Or they've never had a reason to jump that high," added Hayden.

"What if we made some kind of spear, and stabbed at them from the ceiling?" asked Rick, looking up at the ceiling again. The others looked up and saw what he was talking about.

The ceiling was made up of drop-down tiles that hid the pipes and electric lines.

"I think I have an idea," Hayden said, jogging off. Willow went over to the doors, that were shaking slightly as the rats continued to attack them, and climbed on top to check out the ceiling.

Hayden returned soon, carrying the long poles the scientists had used to inject the werewolves from a distance. While Rick helped him modify them to be useful as spears, Willow began taking the tiles down. It would be tricky, but she thought it could be done. By the time they had the spears ready, the rats were aware of her presence on the wall, and had stopped attacking the door.

Hayden and Rick climbed up, handing her a spear. Getting themselves comfortable, they began attacking the rats. It was so much easier. They merely waited until the rat jumped and then stabbed it. Though they found that if they didn't stab it in the head, it would keep attacking.

None of them knew how long they had been killing these rats, but as the last one fell, they cheered. Their backs ached, their bellies hurt, and their arms felt like rubber.

Climbing down from their perch, they heard a new noise. One that was much scarier than the rats had been. It was someone chuckling.
