Chapter 161        Escape Road

Mox’s operation was completed two days after Zhou Qingfeng returned. The medicine and operation equipments in 2030 were a lot more advanced than the ones in 2016. According to Doctor Belfort, Mox would be able to care for himself after ten days; and after a month, he would already be able to walk and move.

However, the living environment in Manhattan was getting worse and worse. Based on what Zhou Qingfeng said, it was true that the future could only become worse.

After twenty days of destructive looting, the resources that were easier to obtain had been exhausted. Before they opened up new ways and possibilities, the few hundred million of people in New York could only wait and starve to death.

Most of them were aware that staying in New York would give them a zero chance of survival. Therefore, a large number of people were running madly away from New York. They planned to search for food and jobs in the agriculture areas.

However, without any preparation and planning, most of them died from starvation on the way. That was what Zhou Qingfeng expected when he just arrived in New York. People who escape without any preparation would only become one of the corpses by the roadside.

Originally, there was David Lawrence who showed up, and brought food and drinks to the people in the city. Unfortunately, things had changed. The so-called ‘savior’ was embroiled in his own troubles. He was busy searching for his wife and could not be bothered to worry about other people at the moment.

“We need to save them, those poor people.”

“What we can do is limited. The amount of food we have now is not even enough to feed ourselves.”

“Then, are we just going to watch them die?”

“That’s right, we can’t do anything about it.”

Half of the managers in the Armed Nun Society were Christians. Lena used those people to establish the community, and as a result, her power became less. In the past few days, the Mothers from the churches had been requesting Lena Fox to save the refugees with their backup food. However, Lena Fox refused what appeared to be a ‘merciful’ but rather stupid proposition.

As a result, more than half of the people from the church left. It was a huge loss for the Armed Nun Society. It was not just the managers who left; more than half of the people Lena Fox initially gathered were gone.

Several people of the United States were very religious, and a lot of them were Christians. In situations that seemed hopeless, religions became very enticing. A lot of them started to leave the Armed Nun Society because they thought the churches would take care of them.

“Half of our income is lost because they left. We’re lacking managers, and I’m losing control over the rest of them.” Lena Fox had gone through a lot of hardships since the cataclysm happened. Finally, Miss Fox ran out of ideas and ways.

“I think we should think about leaving New York now.” Zhou Qingfeng sat in Lena’s office. He gazed at Miss Fox who was normally elegant, now looking exhausted and sitting on a chair. “The people we have now are enough to build another community.”

“Do you think they are willing to leave with us?” Lena shook her head and started another new topic, “Do you know how the Skull and Bones came about?”

Zhou Qingfeng shook his head no.

“There were tons of criminals with severe punishments imprisoned in the Cleander Prison located at the north of New York. There were more than thousands of murderers, drug dealers and thugs in the prison. When the cataclysm emerged, their common interests gathered them, and they soon started getting their sh*t together. Their forces are expanding very quickly.

“And for us, initially there were only you and me. After that, we got Butcher, and finally, Mox, Katrina, and David Lawrence joined. We only have these core members. The other people were with us just because they felt helpless otherwise.

“This is our biggest problem—our core power is too weak. We can’t survive. When there comes any important decisions and actions, the different opinions from them will be enough to drive us crazy.”

Lena Fox’s worry reminded Zhou Qingfeng about the unlucky people in Chinatown earlier. Thousands of them were stuck, but they could not agree with each other. They had been fighting for a week, and now, another week had passed. Still, they were not taking any action; they were just waiting to die.

“So we really should leave New York. This place isn’t even suitable for living.” Zhou Qingfeng looked at the map on the wall. “There are tons of nuclear power stations at the west coast. They should be empty by now. After a year, there might be a chance of core melting, and forming a chernobyl.

“So we can’t go to the west coast.

“It’s similar to the east coast. A lot of nuclear power stations and big cities are there. The worst thing is, according to the nuclear war plan established by the Russians, the nuclear weapon will destroy the cities with more than fifty thousand populations once the nuclear war starts.

“Thus, the east coast is out. People could only run toward the undeveloped areas.

“Apart from that, the winter in the north will be extremely tough without any fuel. Even though it’s only August, we could only run toward the south. However, we can’t go straight to Mexico. The basic facilities there are bad, and it won’t be any better for us.”

Finally, Zhou Qingfeng circled middle of the south of the United States with a red pen. “We have to rebuild our base here.”

“It’s too far,” Lena Fox said.

Indeed, it was too far for them. It was more than two thousand kilometers away from the place where they were currently located. If the road was smooth, they would need around one to two days with driving. However, at least one to two months were required as the roads were blocked at the moment. Apart from that, the airports already stopped functioning, and the small planes would not be able to fit in so many things.

“We need a ship, the resources needed to build a new base, and people to build it.” As Zhou Qingfeng talked about it, he thought the people who he could trust were too few. The ship was also a big problem. They would need sailors, a captain, and lots of fuel. They required too many things.

However, if they did not prepare those things, they would end up as one of the corpses on the way out of New York. Isn’t leaving without preparing anything a way of seeking death? You really thought there will come an angel to save you? Go to hell!

Lena sighed and said, “Luckily, we still have two months to prepare.”

“No, we have at most one month. You can’t consider the time when we’re on the way there. We’ll need at least a month to reach that place along the west coast. Who knows what’s waiting in front of us?”

Considered in that way, their time was indeed restricted.

“Food and drinks are not a problem, but we need more people.” Zhou Qingfeng thought about it, and suddenly, he said, “I remember that there’s an organization selling slaves in the last Cataclysm Journal. Find it and let me have a look. If there’s no other way, maybe we can consider getting slaves.”

The problems that can be solved with violence cannot be considered a problem.
