The childrens’ bodies were found not far from Qi Jingye’s home. After all, they lived in the outskirts of the city and there were very few people here. There also happened to be a small forest nearby where bodies could be buried conveniently.

This time, they were found when a junior high school student took his dog out for a walk. It was his first time coming to this small forest, and then the dog kept barking at a specific spot and dug the soil with his paws. He then poked the spot with a branch curiously and found that the soil was soft.

And then …

Anyway, that junior high school student was in the hospital right now, suffering from shock.

Qi Jingye had come into contact with many dead bodies over the years, but it was really the first time that she had come into contact with children’s corpses.

They were all kids who had just started elementary school, with some of them still carrying small school bags as they were dug out.

It was summer now, and the corpses were quickly rotting. Bugs flew around these little corpses, and the putrid stench was overwhelming.

Sister-in-law Qi had always been the mascot heroine of the team, but now, looking at those children whose ages didn’t look that far off from her daughter, she couldn’t bear but gasp in horror, and couldn’t bear to look at the bodies any longer.

Currently, the coroner was collecting evidence, and word had spread that a murder had taken place here. There were people around who looked on curiously. Qi Jingye rubbed his hair, which had strands of white by now, as he felt a headache coming.

He had seen so many corpses, both decomposing and fresh, with them in all sorts of strange manners as they died. He thought he could bear everything by now, but when he saw these children who were barely a few years old, his heart felt uncontrollably angry and devastated, bursting like a fountain.

People killed, with most of them seeking money and revenge, but what did such small children have to do with all that?

Right now, the only thing they could do was to catch the murderer as soon as possible, to ensure there won’t be any more victims in the future.

Today had been another long day spent at work, and the results from the autopsies soon came out. These children were found to have been suffocated to death.

Fortunately, the children were not buried alive where they were found.

If so, those children would have been in a much worse and desperate situation.

Their parents soon arrived as well, and sounds of people’s cries soon filled the precinct.

Qi Jingye sat in his seat, not even daring to go out and hear more of the cries of those people.

He is a father himself, and his daughter was currently at that age. When he saw those children, the empathy he could feel made him sick.

After all the clues have been determined, the police quickly listed down the suspects.

Because the criminals were so vicious this time, they had validations to shoot if they had to.

The arrest was carried out quickly. Qi Jingye led the way, with Sister-in-law Qi right behind him.

The suspect looked like an ordinary college student, and he had no criminal record after investigation, but a search revealed that he had previously been reported for animal cruelty.

Of course, because there was no evidence, and China had no regulations with regards to this, thus this matter would soon be left alone.

The man continued his role as a student, spending every day in his rented room on top of attending his classes.

While searching through surveillance footage, he was found at the places where the children had disappeared. However, since all they could see were all back and side silhouettes, and the picture quality was not clear enough, it didn’t attract attention.

Despite this, after the children were found, a small piece of skin was found in the mouth of one of the little girls.

It should be the killer’s flesh and blood that she bit off during a struggle.

The first place Qi Jingye went to was the rented house. Things went unexpectedly smoothly. The suspect was in the house, and he was confused when they came, but he was obedient and said he would go with them.

However, just when several people let their guard down, he suddenly attacked the person next to him and jumped out of the window to escape.

Qi Jingye fired a gun and hit him in the leg.

He looked back at Qi Jingye holding a gun by the window, while dragging his legs and limping into the alley.

At this point, this person could be roughly judged as the real murderer. The police began to issue a warrant in an orderly manner and searched the whole city for him. Now, the whole city had the whole network on monitoring. Unless this person had wings and could fly out of the city, he would be bagged by the police sooner or later.

The matter came to an end, but Qi Jingye kept feeling uncomfortable in his heart.

For some reason, the way the man looked at him gave him an uneasy feeling.

He has met many murderers over the years, but he has never seen such calm eyes.

Initially letting them relax their vigilance by pretending to be confused and calmly obedient, and then jumping out of the window decisively and cleanly as soon as the opportunity came. Even the alley where he escaped to was not covered by monitoring, as if he had already predicted this would happen one day.

Maybe, when this murderer committed a crime, he had already thought about how the police would respond when they found out.

That would be terrible.

After thinking about it that way, the hairs on his body couldn’t help but stand on end.

“Let’s eat dinner, quickly eat. It’s been so busy these days, now we can finally have a good meal.”

Sister-in-law Qi put the dishes on the table and sat down to start eating.

Qi Jingye looked at the empty seats, and put  his worries to rest for the moment. “Where’s Jingshu? Did she go out with that kid again?”

“Don’t always say that kid, that kid! Mingyan is not without a name, the big bad elder brother act is enough already.”

Sister-in-law Qi glared at her husband angrily. “Mingyan can’t fight, but this is a peaceful and prosperous time, so what can you do? He teaches, not practices Taekwondo. I want to find such a person for Jingshu. Mingyan is an intellectual, can you use your brain for once?”

Being snapped at by his wife, Qi Jingye felt wronged and frustrated in his heart. He wanted to refute but couldn’t find a reason, so he could only hold a breath and demand reasoning from her.

“I’m just worried that he wouldn’t be able to protect Jingshu if something happened to her. I mean, there are three women in our family, and I’m the only man protecting you, but now he’s here, and it turns out that little fist, tsk tsk, can’t even kill a chicken, right?”

“Come on, wouldn’t you normally go to the grocery store to buy chicken. Why would you want to kill the chicken yourself? To protect the family, it doesn’t have to be by force alone. Although Mingyan can’t fight, he could really talk. I told you last time. He scared the old woman so much that she didn’t dare to hang around our door for days.”

Sister-in-law Qi felt refreshed at the thought of this matter. She also learned a few tricks from Wei Mingyan, and if that old woman dared to chew her tongue in front of their Jingshu again, she’ll scare her half to death!

“Also, being a teacher is about being educated. Jingshu is going to enjoy her blessings.”

Can’t blame Qi Jingye for secretly despising Wei Mingyan. His wife was praising another man in front of him every day. Even if that man was a brother-in-law, he didn’t feel good about it.

And talking about how knowledge is power, if you really have power, fight him!

How else are you going to protect your family if something really bad happens?

Humph!

The mildly smiling man handed Qi Jingshu the ice cream in his hand. He looked at her depressed expression, smiled and asked, “What’s the matter? Did you fail the interview again?”

“Yeah …”

Qi Jingshu took the ice cream and had a bite. She felt terrible, and her voice was low as she said, “I always thought that I was quite good at school, and my teachers said that my professional skills were good, but why do these companies refuse to accept me?”

Her initial ambition had become a heavy burden after receiving blow after blow of reality.

Qi Jingshu had been studying hard just to earn money and work early so that she could lighten the burden on her family. Now, she had graduated, but why couldn’t she find a job?

Wei Mingyan lowered his eyes slightly and looked at his lover, who was overcome with defeat, and reached out his hand as he gently rubbed her head. “Don’t worry, I’m still here. I’m going to start a small business soon, and when I make money, you can be a full-time wife at home.”

Even though her sweetheart was so good to her, Qi Jingshu still couldn’t be happy.

She studied hard for so many years, but in the end, it was for nothing.

Hmm? Business?

“Mingyan, aren’t you a teacher?”

Hearing his girlfriend’s question, Wei Mingyan’s face turned a bit bitter as he spoke softly. “As you can see, the teachers in the school all act according to the headmaster’s words. When they met a student’s domineering parent, they would be restrained by the teacher’s identity. I used to ignore it when I was alone. Now that we have decided to be together, I have to think about it more, for you and our future children.”

“Anyways, I chose to be a teacher at the beginning, so that I can teach students and let every student attain a bright future with me lending a hand, but it is too difficult to educate students nowadays.”

“Jingshu, when I earn enough, I won’t let others look down on us. Those people wouldn’t dare to freely bully our future children. I’ll buy a school and become a teacher again. What do you say?”

Qi Jingshu never thought that her boyfriend, who usually looked gentle and warm, has had so many thoughts in his heart.

She never asked Wei Mingyan why he wanted to be a teacher before, but now she thought she understood.

“Mingyan, do whatever you want. I will support you!”

Although there is no hope for her boyfriend to suddenly become a businessman right out of school, hope is something that can be gained by searching a little, right?

Anyway, they haven’t planned to have children yet. With each other, what hardships couldn’t they deal with? If they work together in the future, they will always get through it.

This is also a change for Qi Jingshu, who was fresh out of school and still naïve. Otherwise, any girlfriend would feel uneasy when she heard that her boyfriend had resigned and wanted to do business.

“There is a lottery station in front. Accompany me to buy a lottery ticket.”

She was thinking about whether she should lower her requirements and find a job to help her family share their burdens as soon as possible when she heard the voice of her boyfriend next to her. Qi Jingshu was stunned. “A lottery ticket?”

“Yeah, invest two dollars a day. Maybe one day I’ll win the lottery. That’s tens of millions of dollars, and then ah… I’ll have money to buy a house and a car, and also, to support you.”

Qi Jingshu was about to say something but then choked back at her sweetheart’s words.

Mingyan, he really… speaks so directly.

The lottery station owner saw an old acquaintance and smiled. “Still gonna buy that set of numbers?”

“Yeah, or buy that one.”

Wei Mingyan handed the lottery ticket he just bought to his girlfriend and showed it to her. “If this lottery ticket wins the prize, my small company can also open up. Come on, put it in your pocket.”

Winning the lottery wasn’t that easy.

Qi Jingshu wanted to laugh at her boyfriend’s naivety, but she looked at his eyes full of hope and swallowed her words silently.

She nodded affirmatively. “Okay! When you win the prize, we’ll start a big company!”

Wei Mingyan smiled on his good-looking face and pulled his girlfriend’s hand towards the school.

“It’s time for Jiayu to leave school.”

“Yeah, I’m still picking up Jiayu today.”

Qi Jingshu nodded and looked at her watch. “There’s still half an hour left.”

“It’s okay, half an hour isn’t much. Let’s go wait for a while and talk about our future kids and stuff.”

“Don’t be so childish, we’re not even married yet.”

“I thought we were getting married soon?”

The two came to the school gate, talking and laughing, when they saw a man with a hoodie holding a child in his arms and getting into a van.

Someone was chasing behind and shouting, “Kidnapping, kidnapping, call the police quickly!!”

Qi Jingshu subconsciously looked at the child in the man’s arm, and her eyes suddenly widened.

That is …

“Jiayu!!”

The man beside her, like an arrow, shot over.

“Hurry up and call the police!!! Someone went into the school to kidnap a child. Somebody!!”

“Over there, stop him!!”

Amidst the chaotic shouting around them, the van barreled into the crowd.

People ducked away in panic, and the teacher and security guard chasing behind them could only watch the van drive away.

No, not just that van.

“Mingyan!!! Mingyan!!!”

Qi Jingshu had never run so fast. She ran behind the car frantically, but could only watch as the man, his face flushed with pain, pulled at the car door and made off with the car.

Wei Mingyan grabbed the door before the man closed the door, but after all, he was an ordinary teacher who didn’t exercise much. After he grabbed the door, he didn’t have the strength to take another step.

People in the vehicle suddenly shut the door, and a sharp pain shot through his hand. The pale teacher, who had never suffered, clenched his jaw and gripped tighter without uttering a word.

“!!”

The man cursed as he drove while distractedly picking up an ashtray and smashing it at Wei Mingyan’s head. Wei Mingyan gritted his teeth, braced his legs, and climbed in a little bit along the door of the car.

“Get off!!!”

Someone kicked at him, but, as if he couldn’t feel the pain, he slowly but surely, climbed in.

Enough to reach the little girl who was in the car, unconscious.

“You are good, aren’t you!!”

Someone kept kicking and hitting him. With some difficulty Wei Mingyan reached out and grabbed Qi Jiayu’s small soft hand.

He wanted to save the child.

The car was driving at a high speed, and the criminal saw how the man didn’t respond however hard he beat him. In a fit of rage, his hands loosened from the steering wheel, trying to push Wei Mingyan off.

–Boom!!

The car swayed and collided with other cars.

Qi Jiayu has been very happy today. Mom and Dad said they would not work overtime today, and they would cook her a big meal. Her aunt also gave her a gift and promised her a big teddy bear for her birthday next week.

She loved teddy bears so much that she had always wanted them, but she never told her family.

She knew that Mom and Dad have worked so hard to make money, and she can’t add to the burden for them.

But her aunt was so good. She knew Jiayu liked teddy bears and said she would give one to her.

Teacher Wei was also very nice to her. He said that when Jiayu celebrated her birthday, he would also give her a big, big teddy bear.

Qi Jiayu always felt apologetic to Teacher Wei. Teacher Wei was so good to her, but she was still secretly afraid of him and hated him. She didn’t dare to tell Teacher Wei that she was afraid, as she was afraid that Teacher Wei would be sad.

She was very sad when she was hated by a lot of classmates in her old school.

But now, it’s different. She was attending a new school where all the students were very kind to her, and she has made good friends.

They knew her birthday would be next week, and they said that they would give her a present too.

Qi Jiayu had never received a gift from a friend. She was really happy and looking forward to next week.

Mom and Dad will definitely buy her a delicious cake, and she will share it with everyone.

The students are nice, the teachers are nice, it’s like being in heaven.

Her last class today was physical education. The teacher took them to play a lot of fun games. Qi Jiayu had a good time. While they were taking a break, she and her best friends sat under the tree and told each other their little secrets.

Suddenly, the bad guys showed up.

Her mouth was covered and she couldn’t make a sound. She didn’t know why she was dizzy. She saw her best friend crying and catching up to her. She wanted to save her, but it was dangerous.

After that, she drowned in darkness.

Qi Jiayu had many terrible dreams, in which her parents were crying, her Aunt was kneeling on the ground, her face was full of tears, and her mother was holding a big and beautiful doll and shaking all over.

Was it a shiver of pain? Was Mom in pain?

Although she didn’t know why Mom and Dad were crying, and why her Aunt wanted to say sorry, she still wanted to comfort everyone.

What’s the matter?

Don’t cry.

Jiayu will kiss you, don’t cry, ok?

“Jiayu, my Jiayu …”

“Dad is wrong, please, come back, Jiayu …”

Isn’t Jia Yu right here?

Dad isn’t wrong, Dad is very good.

“Jiayu …”

A weak voice sounded, and Qi Jiayu opened her eyes slightly, as if she had been pulled back. She felt her head hurt a little, and wanted to look around, but what she saw was only darkness.

“Jiayu …”

The voice from above was hoarse, she didn’t know how many times it shouted like this, “Wake up, Jiayu…”

The small child reacted and realized that she seemed to be in someone’s arms. She couldn’t remember what happened, and her tone was confused. “Teacher Wei?”

“Jiayu, are you hurt? Does it hurt anywhere?” Wei Mingyan asked nervously.

Qi Jiayu replied in confusion, “No, I just feel dizzy.”

The person holding her seemed relieved, although Qi Jiayu still felt a little afraid of the darkness. “Teacher Wei, where are we?”

“We …” Wei Mingyan coughed, his tone was still so gentle, but his voice was hoarse. “We were playing a game of hide-and-seek, has Jiayu ever played it?”

“Played! The teacher also taught us today!” Qi Jiayu was happy again when talking about her newly learned games.

“That’s good. Jiayu, you start counting now. How much can Jia Yu count at most? Can you count from 300?”

Qi Jiayu moved her body when her hands suddenly touched something sticky, but then her little head didn’t think much about it. She answered her teacher’s words, “Yes, Aunty taught me.”

“Ok, we’re gonna play hide-and-seek now. During this time, Teacher won’t make a sound, so you can count. If you hear a sound outside, count loudly, but count slowly, and when you reach 300, you can open your eyes, okay?”

“Okay!”

The man above had indeed stopped making sounds, and Qi Jiayu obediently closed her eyes and began to count loudly and slowly.

“One … two … three …”

When she counted to fifty, there was the sound of someone talking outside. Qi Jiayu recalled Teacher Wei’s words, and kept her eyes closed, and her voice added some volume. “Fifty-two! Fifty-three! Fifty-four!”

“There’s someone inside, it is a child’s voice. Hurry up, hurry up and push the bricks away!”

“It’s a child. The child is protected by an adult. She’s not injured. Hurry up and hold her up …”

With bright lights swaying around, and the sounds of people making noises around them, Qi Jiayu couldn’t help but quietly opened her eyes, which was bright red.

She was stunned and looked up, but she could only see the man’s face covered with blood and his eyes closed tightly.

“Teacher… Teacher…”

Qi Jiayu winced out a cry and reached out to shake the unconscious man above her, but was even more frightened by the sticky blood on her own hands.

Only then did she find that she was held tightly by Wei Mingyan and had no wounds on her body, while Wei Mingyan, who protected her, was covered in blood.

“Teacher …”

Qi Jiayu was cradled tearfully in a familiar embrace as the sound of a police car arriving sounded.

“Jiayu, my Jiayu, you scared Mom to death…”

It was Mom’s voice …

As if she had found her reliance, the little girl clung to her Mother’s skirt and sobbed. “Teacher bled a lot… Teacher said, we were playing hide and seek. I closed my eyes and counted, he… a lot of blood…”

She was frightened, confused, and didn’t even know what she was talking about.

Even her little brain couldn’t comprehend what was going on.

It was not until she grew up that she realized how she survived.

Sister-in-law Qi looked at the man who was covered in blood and closed her eyes with gratitude and tears in her eyes.

If it wasn’t for him, Jiayu would have …

Qi Jingye was also less picky than before and carefully moved the man to the ambulance.

When Wei Mingyan woke up, it was already the night a day after.

He blinked and looked at his girlfriend lying beside the bed.

“Jingshu …”

Qi Jingshu jumped up with red eyes almost the next second. “Mingyan, you scared me to death. Mingyan, you’ve been sleeping all day and night, the doctor said that if you won’t wake up…”

Her tears fell down her cheeks, but before more tears could fall, Wei Mingyan coughed weakly and looked at the sky outside. “It’s almost 8 o’clock, it’s time for the lottery poll.”
