Chapter 21: Corpse Tide (1)

Had Kang Dafeng lured them on purpose?

Lu Yin’s eyes narrowed. I’m worrying too much, he thought.

After Kang Dafeng’s incident, everyone was tense, more so than usual.

A day later, the vehicle stopped near an abandoned station. Their task had only just begun, and the route towards had already been damaged. They’d need to repair it.

“Reporting: A battle was discovered five miles away. Five evolved men were surrounded and attacked by mutated beasts!” A soldier reported.

Lu Yin ordered his men to rescue the evolved men.

Half an hour later, the evolved men were brought in. Their cheeks were hollow, eyebags dark and bulging. They were starving; they hadn’t eaten for weeks.

Lu Yin didn’t give them food, nor did he order anyone to. Anyone who hunted mutated beasts alone in the wilderness needed to be prepared for possibilities of death looming over them. And Lu Yin, he was no saint. He sought only for his survival, everyone else be damned, or they follow along his will.

The five evolved men were isolated. They stood outside the station, enviously watching the army resting peacefully. Not long after, one amongst the five requested he see Lu Yin.

Lu Yin stood on the roof of the station, calmly watching the view from above.

Below was the evolved man. His face was pale. “Sir, can you give us some food? We’re willing to exchange information.”

Lu Yin looked at the evolved man. “Speak.”

“We’ll give information as soon as we are fed, Sir,” The evolved man said eagerly, his mouth salivating at the thought of food dripping from the corner of his mouth.

“Are you bargaining with me?” Lu Yin questioned, his voice containing a lack of warmth.

The evolved man’s expression immediately changed to one of fearfulnesses. “No, no,” He stuttered. “We brought enough food, but it was taken away by a Heaven Realm Expert wearing silver armor.”

Lu Yin’s eyes flashed. “Continue speaking.”

The evolved man swallowed his saliva. His throat felt slightly parched. However, he continued. “There is only one Heaven Realm Expert among us who can fly and that Saint Zhou Shan. I believe he wanted to kill us after snatching our food, but he flew eastward hurriedly. I’m not sure why.”

Lu Yin knew these unlucky men had bumped into Orton. He wondered if Orton managed to contact the other people from the starry skies? If so, the situation would be dire. It had already proven difficult for Zhou Shan to repel Orton alone. If others like Orton were to take immediate action, Zhou Shan would fall to his death.

“Send them something to eat!” Lu Yin ordered. Thereafter, he sat down and looked up at the starry sky.

What was he worrying for? Jinling City, or the survivors?’ He’d always been an outsider, never a native of a place, and certainly not Earth. To put it bluntly, he was the same person as Yatta. However, the days spent living as an Earthling had grown on him. Slowly, he was growing accustomed to his new identity.

He’d only lived here for two and a half years––two and a half years’ worth of memories. If put into perspective, Earth was his home, the only one he considered his home. He didn’t belong anywhere else.

Lu Yin breathed deeply. It was a pity, really. He was no powerful being, and he couldn’t save Earth even if he tried. However, some people, some people he could save so long as it was within his capabilities.

And with such thoughts, Lu Yin turned on his communication device and informed Zhou Shan of Orton and the current information he gathered.

“I understand,” Zhou Shan muttered thoughtfully. “Repair the route as soon as possible. I want to know what happened to the others. Those aliens, they’re not simple.”

Lu Yin hung up.

Other people? Was he talking about the Six Saints?

“I hope Liu Shaoge doesn’t die. Otherwise, who will I find for revenge?” He muttered coldly to himself.

Stars usually filled the sky like pale corn into freshly turned ground. It was the promise of life in the darkness, a sense of warmth springing from the cold — the blue haze of day lifting to reveal the stars. But tonight, tonight there was no starlights for the night sky was painted with dark clouds.

Disappointed, Lu Yin slept inside the armored vehicle.

In the middle of the night, a cry of alarm woke many from their stupor.

“Boss, we found a tide of corpses!” Xu San shouted anxiously.

Lu Yin quickly walked out of the armored vehicle and jumped onto the roof of the station. In the dark, gloomy land, countless zombies were approaching from all directions.

“Everyone, activate your defenses and throw them out while igniting the flames!” Lu Yin commanded.

Not long after, the corpse tide began rushing towards the station. The earth was incinerated. Countless objects set on fire were smashed into the ground, illuminating the sky red as smoke swallowed the sky and covered the earth whole.

“Be careful! Don’t let the flames get close to the station or I’ll burn you all!” Luo Yun barked.

Sounds of bullets fired off in all four directions. The once silent night was now a thing of the past. Nearly ten thousand soldiers massacred the zombies at the outer perimeter. The machine gun’s bullets swept away the dead corpses one by one. From time to time, there were soldiers injured; some few were unlucky and were dragged into the group of zombies, disappearing in the blink of an eye. The five evolved men saved earlier looked around in shock. This was a battle the size of an army. The degree of devastation incurred far exceeded their imagination.

Luo Yun brandished her steel knife. An Earth Realm Expert was something no ordinary evolved human could compare to. With one slash, the powerful force was enough to tear apart dozens of zombies. Though she was timid, she had a fierce aura.

As for Lu Yin, he gripped his iron rod and charged into the masses of zombies, sweeping the area with his weapon.

The practical means to deal with a tide of corpses was the use of firearms, but unfortunately, resources were scarce, and there were too few firearms left in Jinling.
