Chapter 1 – I was a Sword Master in my Previous Life (3)

Sung Joon picked up his phone. The Dungeon Bureau informed him that the investigation results were out and he needed to stop by to write a statement.

‘Oh, right. I forgot to sell my Magic Stones.’

Since he could sell his Magic Stones at the Dungeon Bureau, he decided to kill two birds with one stone and visited the Dungeon Bureau.

“So you’re saying that the Living Armors automatically turned off?”

Sung Joon nodded.

“Then it seems like the Living Armors were limited by a set operation time.”

The Investigator nodded his head. There were several special circumstances within the Dungeon and he concluded that due to the unexpected attack, all of the party members excluding Sung Joon, were annihilated.

After the investigation, he headed to the Appraisal Center and spilled his bag filled to the brim with Magic Stones onto the counter.

“The calculation is complete. It comes out to $11,000.” (roughly converted from won)

Because the rest of his party was wiped out, he received the full amount. The employee immediately transferred the $11,000 to his bank account.

Sung Joon checked his bank balance and tears welled up in his eyes. With this much money, he’d be able to pay for his father’s treatment and his father could stop worrying about him.

Sung Joon left the Appraisal Center and transferred $10,000 to his father’s bank account. He kept $1,000 for his own living expenses.

His phone rang as soon as he deposited it.

[Dad]

Sung Joon picked up his phone.

“Dad, how’re you feeling?”

He could hear his father’s weak laughter over the phone.

“I’m doing fine because of you.”

Sung Joon choked back tears. Sung Joon spoke frequently with the doctor and knew about his father’s condition.

“Anyway, you sent me a lot of money . . . will you be ok?

“Yeah, I found some items in the Dungeon.”

“You didn’t send me all your money, right?”

“Don’t worry. I can just earn more.”

“Ok, I won’t say anything else. Just don’t push yourself too much.”

“Don’t worry, dad,” Sung Joon said with moistened eyes.

By the time the call ended, he had arrived at his one-room apartment.

“I feel great.”

He had only slept a little more than usual but he felt like he was filled with energy.

“I feel like I could lift a boulder.”

He travelled up the mountain behind his home to test his theory. He didn’t think it was possible but he walked over to a rock the size of a small refrigerator.

“W-What is this?”

It felt embarrassingly light and dropped the rock due to the shock.

The rock roared when it collided with the ground, so it didn’t seem like there was anything wrong with the rock.

“Oh my god.”

He tested it with the other boulders and it was the same with them too. He could lift things he couldn’t lift before. It all started with the ‘Shrine for the Past Life’.

But he couldn’t pinpoint exactly what had changed, so he had performed these simple tests.

He didn’t finish his tests until late at night and he wrote down his results on his Memo app. In the past, he had trouble lifting a soccer ball sized rock. But now, he could lift boulders the size of a small refrigerator.

That wasn’t all.

His 100-meter sprint speed had doubled and he didn’t get tired from running until 10:00 at night without any rest.

‘My body got stronger?’

By using Mana, the body would strengthen gradually, thereby increasing the body’s physical abilities. However, he couldn’t help but be surprised by the steep increase in his physical abilities.

‘I could solo the Dungeon!’

Soloing a Dungeon wouldn’t be a problem, now that he had gained strength.

“Now no one can look down on me.”

He hurried home and threw himself onto his bed. The first thing he saw when he woke up was the worn out sword.

‘Did I bring this with me?’

He didn’t have the time to properly access his situation before due to the influx of unfamiliar memories. Sung Joon held and observed the sword that he had randomly stashed away in a corner.

The sword was inscribed with the word, ‘Roel’. Besides that, the sword was nothing special.

‘I’ll take the sword with me for now.’

He planned to go to the Dungeon Bureau to apply for Matching. His sudden increase in strength had to be because of Roel.

“Oi, Legend.”

When he heard his nickname, the Legend, he had an idea of who it might be. He turned his head and what a surprise, it was a face was familiar with.

“Mr. Kang Ho Young?”

“Yeah, it’s me. We have something to talk about.”

Ho Young was a C-rank Hunter who had been close to Deok Soo. He had been suspicious of Deok Soo’s death and came to find Sung Joon.

“I don’t have anything to say, though.”

Sung Joon tore away his frail facade. He might’ve acted servile and weak before, but he was different now.  He wouldn’t show any mercy.

“The pathetic Legend survived all by himself, so he’s brave all of a sudden.”

Ho Young tapped Sung Joon’s cheek lightly. It didn’t hurt but it felt insulting. Ho Young was renowned as a troublemaker on Hunter.com as well.

Ho Young knew the best way to trample someone’s pride.  But he picked the wrong person to mess with today.

“Stop,” he said clearly.

“Did you just tell me to stop? So you’ve finally lost it.”

Ho Young couldn’t believe it. He had never seen this side of Sung Joon.

‘W-What’s with those eyes.’

Sung Joon’s icy stare seemed like they held back a violent storm.

This was killing intent.

‘A mere H-Healer?’ he thought anxiously.

Though he was taken aback, he couldn’t retreat here. If he did, he’d become known as the Hunter who cowered before the Legend. Soon, a large crowd gathered and watched the two.

“Don’t look me in the eye!”

Sung Joon’s head turned. He had been slapped by an irrational Ho Young.

‘I can’t control my body properly. I’ll have to remember that.’ he thought.

Sung Joon smiled lightly. He had seen through Ho Young’s movements, but couldn’t replicate the movements he had used against the Living Armors.

‘There’s still too much I don’t know.’

Sung Joon stroked his burning cheek and glared at Ho Young. He didn’t really feel any different. He promised to pay back Ho Young for this yet felt surprisingly calm.

“You bastard. Don’t look me in the eye!”

“That won’t work twice.”

Ho Young raised his arm but Sung Joon caught his arm and gazed into his eyes.

“Apologize.”

His stare exuded killing intent.  Ho Young felt a chill run down his spine, as if an invisible sword was poised at his throat.

“What’s that?”

“Isn’t he the Legend?”

Sung Joon was renowned as the Legend in not only the district but on Hunter.com as well.

“He isn’t actually afraid of the Legend, is he?”

“He looks like a Combat Hunter… but he’s just a coward.”

“Let’s take a picture and upload it to Hunter.com.”

They whispered. Ho Young grit his teeth and emitted a terrifying killing intent.

‘There’s no way the Legend is releasing this much killing intent.  I misunderstood because I’m tired’, he thought. He smirked and scoffed at Sung Joon.

“What if I don’t want to?” he said sarcastically.

Sung Joon strengthened his grip and Ho Young’s wrist snapped.

“Guah!”

Ho Young struggled but Sung Joon didn’t let him go. He had no intention of releasing him.

“L-Let me go! You bastard! Guh!”

“I’ll let you go if you apologize.”

“Fuck you!”

“You want me to shatter your bones?”

“Guah!”

Sung Joon squeezed harder and Ho Young’s wrist shattered.  Ho Young couldn’t endure the pain and urinated all over the floor. Seeing his sorry state, the crowd stepped back.

“I-I’m sorry! I was wrong! Please!”

Sung Joon let go. Ho Young’s left arm dangled, supporting it with his good arm, and backed off.

– Hunter #129

“Be careful from now on,” Sung Joon said and turned around.

The mechanical voice had called Sung Joon’s queue number.

“Who’s the guy who pissed his pants because of the Legend?”

“I checked on Hunter.com. He’s Kang Ho Young, a C-Rank Hunter.”

“He acted all high and mighty but the Legend made him like this?”

“You’ve been a troublemaker for the longest time. Serves you right.”

“I should upload this to Hunter.com.”

They all mocked Ho Young. Ho Young could hear all the voices and blood dripped from his bitten lip.

‘My life as a Hunter is over at this rate!’ Ho Young thought.

If word spread regarding this incident, he would never be accepted into a regular Dungeon Attack Team. Plus, his life would essentially be over.

‘That was fluke! I’ll attack him from behind and at least get an arm. That’s right. Let’s get an arm.’ Ho Young thought dangerously.

He drew his sword with his healthy right hand and approached Sung Joon. His left arm dangled yet he moved swiftly.

“Ah?” Ho Young said, flustered.

“He, he evaded it?”

Sung Joon had dodged Ho Young’s attack.

“I-I’ll call the Sheriff!”

The clerk raised her radio in between the onlookers once she realized the severity of the situation. Sung Joon looked at the clerk and calmly spoke.

“That’s not necessary.”

He coldly stared at Ho Young and when their eyes met, Ho Young felt a chill run down his spine. He felt like he was suffocating from Sung Joon’s killing intent.

“Now, this is self-defense.”

He drew the battered blade, Roel from his waist.
