Two days after Chinese New Year, there were still a lot of cured meat and salted fish left over from the holidays. But Cai Youyang didn’t like eating them so Lu Feng cooked stir-fried mutton and poor man’s ginseng soup with pig’s feet just for him. When Yu Ling saw these kidney-tonifying dishes, she assumed that he was cooking them as nourishment for his own body. She felt so distressed that she promptly asked him to go upstairs and rest. Lu Feng had deep thoughts on this matter. Considering the disharmonious relationship between mother-in-law and son-in-law, if he were to say that these were for Cai Youyang, it was hard to guarantee that Yu Ling wouldn’t get any ideas.

He shot a glance at the darkening sky outside the window and then asked Yu Ling, “I heard you say yesterday that the tiny vegetables in the backyard needed to be watered?”

Yu Ling clapped. “Almost forgot!” She had become quite forgetful recently, only able to remember one thing at a time. Thus, she rushed to the backyard with a watering can in hand, tossing the matter of cooking at the back of her mind.

Lu Chonghua was sitting in the living room watching TV. He had just returned home and opened the TV, only to see this sight. He turned to the kitchen, not very happy. As the dignified captain of a criminal investigation unit, his shoulder sported two stripes and three stars. When did he not look awe-inspiring? Not in the kitchen. Each had their own ideals.

Lu Chonghua turned off the TV and called out to Lu Feng, saying, “Come here. Dad has something to tell you.”

The range hood in the kitchen hummed as two pots were heated up on the stove. As the soup in the casserole pot on the left was being boiled, the casserole pot made a wheezing sound. Meanwhile, the frying pan on the right crackled as beads of oil jumped out of the pan.

Lu Feng didn’t manage to hear his father’s words at all. He simply continued his work in an orderly manner. He first lowered the fire underneath the casserole. Then he picked up the sliced ginger and leek, tossed them into the frying pan on the right, and stir-fried them a bit. Once they were around 80% cooked, he poured in some oil and some chopped scallions. When the aroma of the scallions began wafting out of the pan, he quickly added the mutton that had been marinated for quite a long time. He also poured a bit of red wine and dark soy sauce before sauteing everything together. Soon, the mutton looked cooked, and an irresistible fragrance entered his nostrils.

Seeing that it was good enough, Lu Feng turned off the fire, took a blue and white porcelain plate, and filled it with the mutton. Just as he was about to bring it to the dining table, he felt a gaze directed at him.

When he turned around to take a look, Lu Chonghua was actually standing right beside him. He didn’t know how long he had been watching.

Lu Chonghua first let out a cough before opening his mouth, intending to lecture him about how men of noble character always stayed clear of the kitchen. He was waiting for Lu Feng to stop cooking, but he didn’t think that this wait would last ten minutes. A nameless rage accumulated and bubbled inside him, ready to explode in an instant.

When Lu Feng noticed his father’s gloomy expression, he surmised that he probably didn’t have anything nice to say to him. Thus, he lifted the plate of stir-fried mutton and said, “You appeared just in time, Dad. Bring this plate to the dining table. My hands are tied right now.”

Steam emitted from the cooked mutton since it was fresh out of the frying pan. Its aroma was capable of drawing out the gluttony within everyone in its vicinity. Even an elderly man like Lu Chonghua began salivating upon taking a sniff of the food.

Lu Feng also handed him a pair of chopsticks. “Try it first, Dad.” Afterward, he pushed him out of the kitchen, not giving time to speak.

And so Lu Chonghua had no other option but to bring the plate to the dining room table and sit down. Then in accordance to what Lu Feng said, he took the chopsticks. The mutton was extremely tender and succulent. Just one bite caused a fragrant aroma to fill his mouth. If he paired this with a small plate of shelled peanuts and a bottle of mulled rice wine, what else could make him happier than an immortal?

When Yu Ling returned from watering the plants outside, she saw Lu Chonghua spiritedly getting dressed and preparing to go out. Puzzled, she stopped him, saying, “It’s already quite late. Why are you going out?”

Lu Chonghua responded, “To buy shelled peanuts.”

“We have some at home.” Yu Ling took a look at Lu Chonghua, whose dignified aura was broken into pieces, before walking toward the refrigerator to take out the shelled peanuts. In the process, she also took out the mulled rice wine that they had been storing for quite some time.

Lu Chonghua quickly fished out his drinking cup. As he held his cup in both hands, he asked Yu Ling to pour him a cup. Thus, he ate the shelled peanuts, drank the mulled rice wine, and occasionally brought a chopsticks-full of mutton to his lips, living a happier life than immortals.

After Yu Ling helped Lu Chonghua settle down, she entered the kitchen and approached her son with the intention to assist him. Only to find that there was nothing left that she could do. Not resigned, she asked, “How’s the soup?”

Lu Feng waved a hand. “I’m watching over it.”

“Where’s Xiao Cai then?” Yu Ling was the type to dislike staying idle. “I called him down earlier.”

Hearing this, Lu Feng thought that it should be time for Teacher Cai to come down. He then said, “I’ll call him down later once the soup is ready. You can go watch TV at the meantime, Mom. I’m more or less done here.”

“Ok,” Yu Ling bitterly said. Afterward, she opened the television, lonely and desolate.

From afar, Lu Chonghua said, “Yu, switch to channel 11.” He was referring to the central Chinese opera channel.

With contempt in her voice, Yu Ling commented, “Do you even understand what you’re listening to?” He still listened to opera? What a poser. Trying to act as a cultured person would only cause him to make a fool of himself.

Yu Ling ignored Lu Chonghua and switched to Mango TV with great familiarity, just in time to watch a scene of the male lead losing his lover unfold. Yu Ling’s nose grew sour as she watched. She took a paper napkin from the table and wiped her tears, eyes focused on the screen in rapt attention.

Lu Chonghua grew so angry that his nose turned crooked. Then all of a sudden, he heard footsteps and looked up. There, he saw Cai Youyang holding his waist and struggling to climb down the stairs. His son sent him off with a plate of stir-fried mutton, while his wife just ignored him…

Lu Chonghua faced Cai Youyang and amiably beckoned him over. This kind behavior was rare, coming from him. “Come here, Xiao Cai.” He then turned to Lu Feng to yell, “Xiao Cai just came down. Add another cup and pair of chopsticks.”

Cai Youyang gazed at Lu Chonghua in surprise. He gripped the handrail along the staircase to support himself and dared not move. What happened today? Just a few days ago after the festivities, the old man was still giving him looks.

Lu Chonghua strangely said, “Come over when you’re called. Why are you just standing there?” He nodded at the plate of stir-fried mutton on the table. “Lu Feng made it. Try his cooking.”

Cai Youyang hesitated for a moment. After observing Lu Chonghua’s face for any unexpected changes, he hurriedly nodded. “Ok.” Then, he hobbled down the stairs, enduring his waist and back pain, and sat at the dining table.

Lu Feng then came out with a small bowl. “Check if it’s too hot and then wait for it to cool.”

Cai Youyang took a sniff of it. It smelt good. When he took the offered bowl, he could see ginseng and wolfberries floating on the surface of the golden yellow soup. He grabbed a spoon and scooped some of the soup. Woah, there were also pig trotters. After an hour or two, the pig trotters had been stewed until soft. Cai Youyang took a bite. It was soft and slightly chewy. It was difficult to master the required heat control when stewing pig trotters. If the heat was insufficient, then one would find it difficult to bite through the pig trotter. If the heat was too high, then the pig trotter would likely be too greasy. However, this bowl of soup was cooked at just the right temperature. The bones were soft but not mushy, while the meat was fatty but not sickeningly greasy.

Teacher Cai was too preoccupied to conduct himself in a dignified manner. As he ate, his lips became glossy with oil and his melancholy dissipated. “Another bowl,” he ordered Lu Feng, casually raising his bowl.

Lu Feng returned to the kitchen and poured him another bowl. As he handed him his bowl, he whispered, “Eat more now, so that you can last longer tonight.”

It was then that Cai Youyang suddenly realized Lu Feng’s wicked intentions. He stared at the delicious soup, suddenly not able to swallow the food. He wanted to pretend that he had lost his appetite, but he couldn’t withstand Lu Chonghua’s encouraging gaze. In the blink of an eye, he finished his second bowl of soup.

Lu Chonghua nodded in satisfaction. His mood improved now that he felt like there was someone willing to listen to him. He then continued eating the peanuts and drinking the wine.

After two bowls, Cai Youyang felt a little full, so he decided to take a momentary break and picked up his phone to play. There were quite a few more replies to his post. Some said he was bragging, while others ridiculed that he must be dreaming. But the most ridiculous thing was that some people suspected that he was ugly and just wanted to make mischief.

Cai Youyang grew somewhat depressed. He closed the forum and made a microblog post. “My boyfriend made pig trotter soup for me. If things go on like this, he’ll make me round as a ball. Really annoying.”

His followers were all close friends. When they saw his post, some scolded him for the PDA and told him to scram. Meanwhile, others wished them a long and happy life together. Elated, he responded to a few comments. Then out of the blue, he received a comment from a strange account.

User 181xxxxxxxx: Give him to me if you don’t like him.

In an instant, rage bubbled within Cai Youyang. Why were there people on his microblog who he didn’t recognize and also wanted to steal his boyfriend? So, he typed out a long paragraph scolding this person. But just as he was about to post his comment, he realized that he might appear too defensive against that person. After some thought, he went with his earlier approach again and coldly sent two words: won’t give.

User 181xxxxxxxx quickly uploaded a photo of himself and begged, “Then please introduce someone to me.”

Since the person had changed their tone of speech, Cai Youyang intended to casually make a promise. When he looked more closely at the photo they sent, he realized that the user was actually a man. And a very good-looking one at that.

Then at that moment, Lu Feng brought the rest of the dishes to the dining table and called out that dinner was ready.

Cai Youyang quickly exited from his microblog and stored away his phone. A better-looking man than him? Didn’t exist.
