TERROR PARADISE CHAPTER 19 – THE EERIE CINEPHILE’S CITY ARC(PART 3)

Proofreading: Kallamez, Volly, Aravyre

“One, two, three… Hmmm… Just right, five.” Feng Bujue counted as he reached the city center, leaving the district most brightly illuminated by street lights.

Standing on the bonnet of a car and tightly grasping a pipe wrench in one hand, he was extraordinarily alert. He was risking his life by being in such a dimly lit high spot, trying to draw the attention of those strange infants.

Wang Tanzhi pulled out his “fruit knife” and was wearing the armour he had gotten from a single player survival mode earlier—a black, rather nondescript helmet. He and Long Aomin were practically standing back to back. They did not stray too far away from the street light and stood guard in opposite direction.

The responses of “Lonely” and “Loneliest”, however, were no different from those of the man and woman in horror films about to trigger their death flag; the woman was grabbing the man’s hand from behind, while the man was standing sideways in front of the woman, an apt way for them to get themselves killed.

The strange infants’ silhouettes were moving, concealing themselves in the dark parts of the streets, using the shadows of buildings and cars as cover. The movements of those monsters were indeed fast, in spots where light managed to shine one could be seen for a second at most, after which its body would fleetingly disappear.

The spot where Feng Bujue was standing was rather far away from the street lights, with surroundings shrouded in many shadows. It wasn’t surprising that he was the first to be ambushed. He did, however, spot an infant leaping from the ground, jumping over two meters, aiming to deliver a killing blow at his back.

This was something he had anticipated. He turned to face it and was just in time to see the baby leap before his eyes. The skin of this monster was bluish-green in color all over its body and its body was shaped just like an infant’s. Its face looked freakishly ugly and uneven yellow teeth were bursting out of its mouth. Both of its forearms had been replaced with small sickles and below the knees were a pair of animal legs. At the ends of the legs, however, were not feet but hooves.

The reason why Feng Bujue had chosen to stand on the roof, was that he had taken into account the fact that those monsters were less than a meter tall. In order to attack targets in higher spots, they needed to jump and that strange infant had indeed done that. Since it had jumped, it was suspended in the air and there would be a period of time during which it could not dodge…

In terms of strength, Feng Bujue naturally had the upper hand, and he had made ample preparations for this lure-and-kill strategy. To see how he targeted the strange infant’s head from the time he raised the wrench to the sound that it made, the smash was indescribably disgusting…

You, the reader, can try to imagine it too. A watermelon is flying towards your face and you use a stick to strike and brutally burst it in mid-air. But that watermelon is filled with rancid liquid, viscous pus, congealed foamy liquid and so on. All together, the contents burst out and, due to inertia, fly towards you…

The situation which Feng Bujue encountered was exactly that, the “viscera” that had spilled on was very realistic, even down to its smell. To put it in a more artistic way, Feng Bujue’s body was exuding a dark and mysterious stenchl; to put it in layman terms…..His whole body stinks.

Even though that strange infant had been killed in one blow by Feng Bujue, there was still another four more around. Their numbers were probably generated from the total number of players in the game, however they were not programmed to go after different players individually.

Except for Feng Bujue, the rest were standing underneath the lights. As people who watch horror shows should know, monsters tend to specially attack people that are alone. Therefore, the remaining four ignored the others and completely surrounded Feng Bujue, who was currently at a relatively dark spot.

In this situation, Feng Bujue was indeed getting a bit nervous, though unfortunately he still could not experience the feeling of fear. As he could still maintain his composure and think clearly, he immediately ruled out a plan to retreat back to the street lights from his mind. By now, he already had a good idea regarding the monster’s speed. He knew that, if the infants were to jump towards him as soon as he came down, they would reach him within five seconds and cut his legs off.

Fighting these small and agile monsters on the same horizontal plane would certainly go bad. Feng Bujue estimated that, with his abilities, he would definitely get injured fighting them one-on-two without the height advantage. One-on-one would still be fine.

The second strange infant was also pouncing towards him after ten seconds. Since Feng Bujue didn’t know when the remaining three would begin to move, however, he needed to deal with the one that was in his sight. He repeated the same strategy again and viciously struck a blow with his wrench. The blow was not as accurate compared to the first time, but the pipe had still managed to strike the side of the strange infant’s head. The fire attribute and the critical on head special effect provided a pretty effective offense and the second infant was smoothly finished off.

However, the third wave of attacks started before Feng Bujue had the time to withdraw his arm. This time the two infants leapt together and lunged at Feng Bujue’s left and right rear simultaneously. If he turned his body to block, he could stop one at best and it was hard to say if he could turn it into another one hit kill.

At that very moment, seeing a golden flash appear in the distance, a burly figure had reached the battlefield in an instant. Just like riding on a skateboard, Long Aomin moved and rushed over. His legs had not moved and it was evident that this transportation came from the activation of some sort of skill.

As expected of someone that is rank 10, once they start fighting, it is impossible not for one to be in awe. Long Aomin raised his shield in front of him and made use of the skill to close the distance between a strange infant, instantly blowing it away. Following that, he stretched his arm and waved it, relying on his arm span to scrape the other strange infant’s waist using the edge of his shield, causing it to lose its balance in the air and diverted the trajectory of its swoop.

Feng Bujue did not miss that opportunity. With this two uninterrupted seconds, he had enough time to react. Picking up the pipe wrench, he defeated the strange infant that had injured his waist and was immediately rewarded with an outburst of smelly serous fluid in all directions.

After Long Aomin saw him dealing the finishing blow to that strange infant, he quickly ran towards the other strange infant that had been blown away by him. Reaching near it, he knelt down and raised his shield, pinning it down in a single strike.

The strange infant had just crashed onto the ground after being blown away from the earlier skill and was on an unstable footing. Seeing a large, brawny man rushing towards its direction, it could only raise up the sickles in front of its arm to intercept it. Although some sparks flew from the surface of the shield, it was a type of monster that was not very strong in nature, so, it was impossible for it to destroy this superior equipment that was capable of both offense and defense with its strength.

With a roar that was akin to a tiger, Long Aomin bashed it repeatedly with the shield he carried. After several weird cries, that strange infant had turned into a type of meat paste. It was obviously as dead as a doornail.

“Where’s the other one? Let’s cut it into pieces.” At this moment, Wang Tanzhi had just reached the side of it by running. In reality, Long Aomin and him rushed here at the same time, although he activated his movement skill and reached here in half a second while Wang Tanzhi chose to run. In the few seconds it took, brother Long had killed one and assisted with attacking the other.

“Don’t be too overconfident, I have a feeling that it’s not going to be that sim-…” before Feng Bujue finished his sentence, the surroundings suddenly turned pitch black, every light source in the city was extinguished, including the moonlight in the sky.

It was as if the world had been swallowed whole by something and was engulfed in total darkness. The sounds made from breathing, whispering and laughter…at that time, all of it was very clear, almost like it was by the side of everyone, in that darkness, as if it was within reach, yet indiscernible.

After a few seconds, just like the CG introduction at the beginning of the game, the dim moonlight shone once again, the street lights were relit once more and the surroundings’ luminance was restored to the state before the darkness settled in.

And that last strange infant that laid dormant in the shadows had already changed drastically after going through that strange baptism of darkness earlier.
