Chapter 41.1

Win win!

A few floors up in another classroom, Ruan Mingxuan had just opened his book when a line of black words caught his eyes: *“To intentionally cultivate those flowers yet it failed to bloom, those carelessly sown willows lushly grow to provide shade.”
(TN: saying found in ‘Increasing Xianxian’ by Zhao Yitao. Metaphorically to mean that some things, even when you put in all the effort the yield would not amount to much. Rather those things that seem random or that has gone with the flow of things, at times provide yields beyond expectation. Simply put, some things can’t be forced.)

The space between his eyebrows instantly jumped up.

It had not crossed his mind that he had spent all that effort tutoring Li Erqin with her Physics all evening, only to assist and make Rong Si’s *job much easier.
(T/N: Author suddenly used so much idioms within the opening sentences! 搜顺风船 soushunfengchuan – to search for the path of the wind that is smooth sailing. Essentially to make things easy for someone.)

Rong Si had approached the subject from another angle to try to explain those concepts to her. In doing so, he had also found out the best method of explaining things such that Li Erqin could comprehend everything fully.

Ruan Mingxian had spent the entire evening with the lady, *only to find himself a wounded soldier. Rong Si was awarded with a double win.
(TN: another idiom, 赔了夫人又折兵 peilefurenyouzhebing, literally to give away one’s wife and then lose an army on top of it, or to suffer a double loss while trying to trick someone.)

WIN WIN!

***

Midway during the evening study class, a girl’s sudden outburst broke the silence in the classroom. “It’s snowing!”

This would have been the last snowfall for the year.

The students who were struggling to concentrate on their revision and self-study very quickly stirred into action.

LI Erqin rested her chin on her hand as she looked out the window at the falling snow.

Like tiny folded white papers (confetti) gently falling from the sky, the classroom lights reflected on the snowflakes that flitted near the window pane, causing them to look like sparkly white jewels. Each flake seemed to glisten and illuminate.

They formed a hazy ethereal white imprinted on an endlessly black night.

Li Erqin didn’t know why, but she suddenly wanted to turn around and look at Rong Si again.
(maripaz: I know why, haha! Minodayz: Me too … I would have done it too!!!)

Every spare moment she had, her mind would turn to Rong Si. She wanted to know, what was he doing? What facial expression did he have on? What was he thinking?

However, she didn’t dare turn back.

After all, what if he happened to be looking at her at that same moment?

Absentmindedly, she made a few scribbles on the draft paper to her right and kept her left hand on some books. Then she put down her pen, pushed the draft paper aside, took a book off her desk and turned around.

Let’s just ask some random question.

She had just made up her mind to do this when she suddenly stopped.

Rong Si’s spot was completely empty.

He wasn’t even at his seat.

Peng Zige was all alone, working on his Politics worksheets when he looked up at Li Erqin with a strange expression. “What are you doing?”

Li Erqin had not yet recovered from her surprise. “When did Rong Si leave?”

“He has patrol duty today …”

Li Erqin stared blankly. “Oh.”

Peng Zige put down his pencil. “What is it?”

Li Erqin waved her book around. “Wanted to ask Rong Si a question.”

Peng Zige stared. “Politics?”

“Why?”

“Your Politics grade is just a few points below Rong Si’s grade. You still need to ask him?”

Li Erqin kept her face expressionless. “A few points are still points.”

“Does one point count?”

“Yes.”

Peng Zige was happy. “Last time, my politics grade was one point above yours.”

Li Erqin looked straight at him and slapped her hand on the textbook.

Peng Zige’s eyes opened wide. “Eh hey! Are you looking down on my one point?”

Li Erqin’s face was as usual. “Yes.”

“Didn’t you just say that even one point counts?”

Li Erqin curled her lips and suddenly said, “Look, it’s snowing outside.”

Peng Zige was puzzled.

Li Erqin looked at him.

Peng Zige said, “I know.”

“Look.”

Peng Zige obediently looked. By the time he turned back to Li Erqin, she had already returned to her seat and buried herself in her books.

Peng Zige seethed and jabbed at her. “I say, Erqin.”

Li Erqin had no reaction.

“Erqin.”

Still no reaction.

“Li Erqin.”

Li Erqin turned around and asked bewilderedly, “What is it?”

Peng Zige wanted to explode. “What do you think?

Li Erqin’s face still had puzzlement written all over it.

Peng Zige pointed to the book on her desk. “Are you looking down on me? Isn’t having one point higher still a better grade than you?”

Li Erqin nodded her head sincerely. “Yes.”

“Then why can’t you ask me questions?”

Li Erqin’s expression was all innocence. “You were looking at the snow.”

Peng Zige wanted to pinch her to death. “Li Erqin!!”

Li Erqin let out a breath before picking up her book from her desk and facing Peng Zige in all seriousness. “Sorry to bother you my fellow student, but would you be able to help explain this question as I have not been able to wrap my head around it.”

Peng Zige wore a satisfied smile and prepared to explain the problem fully. From the row in front, Su Zi, who was supposedly deep in her studies, made a “pooh!” sound.

Peng Zige moved his line of sight to Su Zi’s back. “Su Zi.”

No response.

“Su Zi!”

Still no response.

“Ah Zi Zi~~~”

Su Zi frowned and turned around. “I say, Peng Zige, do you think you could quiet down please?”

Peng Zige waved his hand around the classroom. “As you can see, everyone is being loud.”

Everyone really was being quite loud.

The teacher in charge of the self-study session had gone off somewhere, and the snow was continuing to flutter down outside. From the first whispers of excitement, a steady hum of conversation had eventually ensued. This was why Peng Zige’s talking was really not out of place and in fact mixed harmoniously with the classroom noise.

Su Zi was extremely vexed with herself. She wished she had just ignored Peng Zige’s earlier jibe.

Peng Zige had on an evil smile as he asked, “Little Su Zi, what were you smiling about just now?”

Li Erqin was thoroughly ignored, and she let out a breath. Then she snuck another sideways glance at Rong Si’s empty seat.

What was he doing?

At almost the exact same time, her cell phone buzzed in her pocket.

Li Erqin took out her cell phone, unlocked the screen and clicked on the incoming message.

It was from Rong Si.

He had sent a picture of the snow under a street lamp.

Against a dark backdrop of the night was a shard of silvery white light shining out from the streetlamp. The snowflakes that flitted beneath the streetlamp were pristine white, gradually dispersing away as the darkness encompassed it. To the side was a bald tree that was covered with snow as its branches reached out into the darkness, quietly accompanying the streetlamp.

Li Erqin looked at the picture over and over again before replying: [Really beautiful.]

After sending her reply, she stuck her phone back into her pocket.

Her heart had suddenly calmed down and settled after being pensive and restless, worrying about everything known to man for most of the day.

Rong Si returned from his patrol, bringing in with him the icy chill. The hood of his jacket was still littered with snowflakes that had yet to dissolve.

Li Erqin felt that within the warmth of the classroom a refreshing flow of air had forced its way in. However, her heart had began to have that unsettled feeling again. She looked at each individual word on her revision paper, but she was not able to string them into a coherent sentence, much less understand what the words were saying.

She became all *flustered.
(T/N: 心浮气躁 xinfanqizao – an idiom to describe being agitated or flustered and miffed.)

Minodayz: Well, blushes and all to last til Christmas. Keep safe and be well! Happy holiday!!!! How I wish for snow this Christmas.
MERRY CHRISTMAS from the team at MG!
